Leslie Buck Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 30, 2010.
NEW YORK (AP) - Countless New Yorkers and visitors have warmed their hands on it - a blue, white and gold cardboard cup with an ancient Grecian design, steaming with coffee or tea.

This pop-culture emblem of New York is slowly disappearing. And now the man who created it is gone.

Leslie Buck died on Monday at his home in Glen Cove, Long Island, at age 87. He succumbed to complications from Parkinson's disease, said his son, Robert Buck, who for years worked alongside him at a Connecticut cup-making company.

Starting in the 1960s, the Holocaust survivor from Eastern Europe decorated his creation with Greek urns, images of coffee cups and the phrase "We Are Happy To Serve You" in a font resembling ancient Greek.

The new product, made by the Sherri Cup Co. of Kensington, Conn., was aimed at urban diners owned by Greek immigrants who were, in fact, happy to serve customers sipping from hundreds of millions of the cups over the decades.

The design soon spilled into the streets, used by vendors peddling coffee on chilly days.

Leslie Buck called it the "Anthora" - unable to quite pronounce "amphora" (or urn) in his accented English.

He was born Laszlo Buch in Khust, Czechoslovakia - now part of Ukraine. He survived Auschwitz and Buchenwald, leaving Europe after his parents died in the Holocaust.

In New York, with an Americanized name - Leslie Buck - he went into business, starting a paper-cup manufacturing company called Premier Cup in Mount Vernon, N.Y.

In the 1960s, Buck joined Sherri, which by the early 1990s was selling 30 million pieces a year of the cup designed by an artistically untrained immigrant, said Robert Buck.

They became standard props in films set in New York and television shows such as "Law & Order." Imitators followed, adding variations like columns and discus throwers.

Then came Starbucks and other gourmet shops, sipping away at the ordinary Ameri can coffee market, "and they had their own fancy cups," said Robert Buck. "And now, it's not as big a thing as it used to be."

The "Anthora" is still around in many New York diners, delis and an occasional food cart, but it's also popping up as nostalgia - in T-shirt images and as ceramic mugs at gift shops.

Solo Cup Co., the Illinois company that took over Sherri, only makes the originals on special order, a representative said.

Buck leaves his wife of 61 years, the former Ella Farkas; two daughters, Beverly Eisenoff, of Charlotte, N.C., and Linda Rush, of Syosset, Long Island; and four grandchildren.

I know New Yorkers will miss that cup if it ever goes away completly. Especially the oldtimers. I hope the family can find comfort in the scripture at Revelayion 21:4 where it states that one day God will wipe every tear from our eyes and death will be no more.

Rob
Saying good-bye to your parent at any age is painful. I wish you fond memories of the man that you worked with, side by side, for so many years. Please take comfort in the fact that he was proud of you.

I remember so vividly my very first of cup of hot brewed coffee in one of Mr. Buck's iconic cups == it was during my first ever foray into New York City when I was a college freshman in Westchester County in the late 70s. I remember thinking at that time -- what a cool cup!!!! and I've really arrived!!!! Many years later, I used to get steaming cups of coffee at a little corner grocery on the Upper East Side, who still served their brew in the Buck Cup, and those occasions brought back happy memories of my first Buck Cup experience. What a lovely legacy to leave behind. Now that I know more about the man behind the cup, I will enjoy sipping from them even more in the future. God bless Mr. Buck and my sincerest condolences to his family.

Fondly, a friend in Boston.

My thoughts and prayers are with the Buck Family in their time of grief. At times like these, drawing close to God in prayer is what will "sustain you." (Psalm 55:22) I hope this will bring the family a measure of comfort.

To the Family and Friends of Leslie Buck,

So sorry for the loss of your dear loved one. He will always be remembered for that wonderful invention of the famous blue, white and gold coffee cup. I know this very talented person like Mr.Buck will truly be missed.

Please find comfort from the words at Psalms 34:18-"God is near to those that are broken at heart..."

You can feel that Death can leave a heartache that nothing can heal, just know that Love can leave a memory that no one can steal.

Unbelievable! I live in Texas, and I am proud to say that I had the pleaure of drinking from the famous blue, white and gold coffee cups during my brief stay in New York. Going to the little deli every morning on my way to work on Madison Avenue, and getting a fried egg sandwich on a croissant and a wonderful hot cup of coffee in one of those cups. I really felt that I was a true New Yorker, or at least looked the part. Rest in peace Mr. Leslie Buck.

I remember when I was a just a little guy of four or five, back around 1949; my mother would take me on the train downtown to see a movie and a stage show. We would stop before for coffee, and it was always served in one of Les' White-Blue-Gold paper cups. It always seemed to make that hot cup o joe taste like a million. Ma would never even dream of going downtown without her hat and gloves. She would love to treat us to a few drops of Christian Brothers Brandy in that coffee and it was always piping hot coffee, strong as I can't say here, in one of Les' fine cups. Ahhh for the good old days.

Thanks Les, from this old man, and please say hello to Ma for me.

We here at the Gildersleeve Funeral Services would like to take a moment to wish the Bucks a peaceful time in their hour of loss.

Now is not the end, but the first minutes of that long, happy journey up the Glory Road with our golden slippers and our big speckled bird flying near over our heads. On and up! Up and on! To that wonderful Glory on the highest!

Brother Les Buck. Father Blue Cup Buck. The road to Him is now open and clear, go forward, and then wait for us and the rest of the holy, happy devine folks that will surely come after, in but a very short while!

Peace and humble blessings on the Bucks, and all who took enjoyment from those blue, white and gold paper cups. They made the day a little brighter, just like the old lamp lighter.

Brothers and sister please pray for our national leaders and the Bucks and all who suffer pain, sickness, and violent weather conditions that wreck their homes, everywhere.

Amen
