Calvin Hannah Obituary
Hannah took pictures at The Tuscaloosa News for about 45 years, and he served a long stint as chief photographer before retiring in 1994. He was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in the mid-1980s but continued working for years.
Hannah died Sunday; a private burial is scheduled for Wednesday.
Hannah briefly attended the University of Alabama but went to work at a photo studio because he needed money. After joining the Tuscaloosa newspaper, he chronicled the civil rights movement in west Alabama, including the brief enrollment of Autherine Lucy as the first black student at the University of Alabama in 1956.
Hannah is survived by his wife of 56 years, Margaret, and three daughters.

Calvin Hannah understood how to produce excellent newspaper color earlier than most. I went to The News in 1974 as a young managing editor, somewhat full of myself, and in his patient manner he taught me how to set up the photos, how to choose them and how to make sure they told the story. Our prayers are with his family.
