Fred Matua Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 6, 2012.
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Fred Matua, the former Southern California lineman who started at guard on the Trojans' 2003 and 2004 national championship teams, died Sunday. He was 28.

The school said Sunday that Matua died of a heart-related issue at White Memorial Medical Center.

Matua left USC after his junior season to enter the 2006 NFL draft. He was selected in the seventh round by Detroit and played that season for Cleveland. He also spent time on practice squads with Tennessee and Washington and played in the United Football League.

In high school, he was a two-way player at Banning in Wilmington, Calif.

Matua is survived by 4-year-old daughter Tiamoni.

I loved Fred.. He was my student ... He had such a great sense of humor. Real to the core. I absolutely adored him. I cannot believe he has passed at such a young age- my heart absolutely broke when I heard the news. God bless you Fred, for all the joy you brought to me and those around you. It was a blessing to know you. My deepest condolences to the family and friends who loved him.

Amazing person, always made everyone laugh and smile. Good hearted person. Everyone has a special memory of you, you accomplished so much, and we are all proud of you.
To the Matua family: "It will be the little things
that you will remember,
the quiet moments,
the smiles, the laughter.
And although it may seem
hard right now,
it will be the memories
of these little things
that help to push
away the pain
and bring the smiles
back again."

I remember meeting Fred during a coaches clinic in LA run by Pete Carroll and Nike. I will always remember him chanting in his native language along with Deuce Lutui and some of his other teammates while they waited to get back into the practice. I was lucky enough to get his autograph on a National Championship cap and talk with him. He was a very passionate athlete who loved football. You will be missed bruddah! Godspeed and God Bless!!

O for a day to walk again slow through a forest deep O for the time to talk again before I go to sleep O for the warmth of summer sun the chill of winters eve and O for the chance to sing my song once more before I go O for the scent of autumn air brisk clean and cold O for the chance to travel where the seas are blue and bold O for the prayer I never prayed O for the kiss I never kissed and O for the chance to sing my song once more while yet I missed cry of bird and wail of wind word unspoken sin un-sinned a night to dance a hill to climb the chance to sing while there is time O for the taste of meat and ale to linger on my tongue O for the sight of hill and dale and faces that are young O for the hand of one I love the time to bloom and grow and O for the chance to sing my song once more before I go.
