George Kuvakas Obituary George Daniel Kuvakas, aged 79, passed away on April 17, 2025, surrounded by the love of his family in Orange, California. Born on June 8, 1945, in Torrance, California, George was a man whose larger-than-life personality was only matched by his towering stature of 6'4". His infectious humor and quick wit drew people to him, and to know him was to love him deeply.
George grew up in the South Bay area and was a proud graduate of Banning High School in Wilmington, California, class of 1963. As a young man, he was an All-Star Baseball athlete with aspirations of joining the big leagues. Though he played semi-professional baseball for several years, the elite world of the big leagues remained elusive. Nevertheless, his passion for the game never waned, and he remained an avid fan and player throughout his life.
His work life began "on the docks" at the Ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles, as a member of the International Longshore and Warehouse union, following in the footsteps of his father. George's career on the docks spanned an impressive 48 years, during which he rose through the ranks from an entry-level longshoreman to the respected positions of Foreman and Walking Boss of Local 94. He was instrumental in negotiating for the dock workers and often served as an expert witness in matters concerning personal injury cases for his colleagues. His dedication to his career and the respect he earned paved the way for a third generation of his family to enter the profession. George retired in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and strong leadership.
In retirement, George, alongside his beloved wife Carrie, embarked on a new venture as the owners of a Kona Ice Franchise. Their goal was simple yet impactful: to raise money for non-profits and give back to the community. Known affectionately as the Kona Man, with his wife as the Kona Lady, George found joy in serving others and contributing positively to the lives of those around him.
George's love for baseball was matched by his eclectic taste in music. From the hard-hitting rock of AC/DC and Scorpions to the classic Italian Tenors and Opera, his appreciation for music knew no bounds. Family gatherings were often filled with his favorite tunes, creating memories that would be cherished forever.
Family time was George's most treasured possession. He cherished every moment spent with his wife, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether it was relaxing on the pontoon boat on the Colorado River or being playfully nicknamed the "cookie monster" for his love of desserts and sweets, George lived for these moments.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Carol Lynn Kuvakas; their children: Deana Occhipinti, Anthony Occhipinti and his wife Chelsea and Andrew Kuvakas and his wife Kathee; eight grandchildren, Kayla Kuvakas, Alexandria Padget, Andrew Kuvakas, Sophia Janji, Lola Janji, Beau Occhipinti, Gus Occhipinti, and Lincoln Occhipinti; and two great-grandchildren, Alvin Heye and Gavin Heye. George was preceded in death by his parents, George T. Kuvakas and Carmela (Lobuglio) Kuvakas; his brother Randy Kuvakas; and his daughter Karen Kuvakas Carlisle.
He was a cherished father figure and beloved presence in the lives of many, offering guidance, love and support not only to his own family but to countless friends, nieces and nephews and extended family members who saw him as their own. His warmth, laughter and wisdom left a lasting impact on all who knew him.
A man of unwavering faith, George loved the Lord with all his heart. Described as loving, faith-filled, and selfless, he made a profound impact on those fortunate enough to cross his path. George Daniel Kuvakas's legacy will continue to inspire and live on through the countless lives he touched. He will be deeply missed, but the love he shared will resonate forever in the hearts of his family and friends.
