Senator Mathews was a mentor as well as a friend. He and the people around him gave myself and many others an opportunity to work for the election and in the administration of Gov. Ned McWherter. For that, I will always be grateful. His diplomatic style and grace, his advice and his wise counsel will be sorely missed by myself and his many friends and family.

Senator Mathews was a gentle giant and I am proud to call him my mentor. He was an extraordinary public servant: selfless, whip-smart, devoted, a pragmatic problem-solver with an uncommon heart. And he was a champion of promoting the careers of women and ensuring that all voices were heard. We will miss him, but his legacy will endure in all the people he inspired to leadership and careers in government.

Our thoughts and prayers are with this family while you mourn your loss. Harlan Mathews is remembered fondly by all who were fortunate enough to have spent time with him. Surely Jesus must have had him in mind when he made the promise at Luke 23:43. Be assured that this nation will remain deeply indebted to him for all his contributions.
