Lane Evans Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 6, 2014.
CHICAGO (AP) - Former U.S. Rep. Lane Evans of Illinois, a former Marine who fought for veterans' rights during his 24 years in office, has died after a long fight with Parkinson's disease.

His legal guardian and former congressional staffer Michael Malmstrom says Evans died Wednesday at a nursing home in East Moline, Illinois. The Democrat was 63.

Evans was first elected from his western Illinois district in 1982, and went on to serve 12 terms.

Evans announced he wouldn't seek re-election in 2006, citing his deteriorating health. He left office in January 2007.

The Vietnam War-era veteran served overseas in Okinawa, Japan.

As a congressman, he fought for the rights of veterans, including pushing legislation to help those exposed to Agent Orange.

He is survived by his three brothers.

The Lane Evans Family

Dear Friends:

I am writing to extend my deepest sympathies on the loss of your brother and dear friend, Lane. I deeply respected his service to our nation as a Marine during the Vietnam War era and I wholeheartedly supported his efforts on behalf of veterans as a U.S. Representative. Indeed, he was the first, or one of the first, members of Congress to recognize the traumatic effects of PTSD on our nation's veterans during the Iraq and Afghanistan Wars. I consider it an honor to have served with Lane in Congress. He was a good man, a good friend and colleague, and a great American.

There is little I can say, however, to ease the pain of your loss right now. May your faith, and the great outpouring of love from family and dear friends help you through this trying time. You can take comfort in knowing that Lane's memory and example will live forever in history and especially among all those who knew and loved him.

Sincerely,

Leon E. Panetta

When I was active in local Democratic politics in Peoria years ago, I had encountered Lane in various places, always talking with people. He impressed me as being an extremely caring person and you couldn't help but like him. I am sorry to hear of his suffering and now his passing. My sincere condolences.

Lane was a man of uncommon decency, compassion and moral courage. We met our first day in law school and remained friends through our years of shared service in the Congress. We spent long, wonderful hours talking about politics, the Marine Corps and the Beatles. He was a quiet mentor and incredible role model - for me and so many others. Semper Fi, my friend.
