William Hornby Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 19, 2014.
DENVER (AP) - William H. Hornby, a former managing editor, executive editor and vice president at The Denver Post, has died. He was 91.

The Post reported that Hornby died on Tuesday.

Hornby began his four-decade career at the Post as a copy reader. He also wrote a regular op-ed column for the newspaper before retiring in the mid-1990s.

Hornby graduated from Stanford University and the London School of Economics. He worked in Paris for the U.S. government's Marshall Plan and in San Francisco for Stars and Stripes, the U.S. military newspaper. He joined the Post in 1957.

Hornby served as board chairman for History Colorado. His wife, Barbara Sudley Hornby, served as director and president of the Colorado Historical Society.

A stepson, Jamie Sudler, said funeral services were pending.

Bill was my boss and mentor for many years at the Post. I always admired his spirit and cheerful outlook. I was looking forward to seeing him at the next Old Timers brunch. He offered to give my daughter a miniature goat before she learned her zoning would forbid it. But we both blessed him for the offer.

Sorry for your loss. Our days ebb away because of your fury; And our years come to an end like a whisper. The span of our life is 70 years, or 80 if one is especially strong. But they are filled with trouble and sorrow; They quickly pass by, and away we fly. Psalm 90:9,10
