Richard McBrien Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 26, 2015.
SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — The Rev. Richard McBrien, a University of Notre Dame theologian known for his unabashed liberal stands on various church teachings and his popular books on Catholicism, died Sunday in his native Connecticut, according to the school. He was 78.

The often-quoted theology professor, who for nearly 50 years penned a weekly column for Catholic newspapers, courted controversy with his criticism of Pope John Paul II's emphasis on orthodoxy, and he advocated for change. McBrien also spoke out in favor of artificial contraception, the ordination of female priests and optional celibacy for priests.

"While often controversial, his work came from a deep love of and hope for the church," said Notre Dame's president, the Rev. John Jenkins. "We pray for eternal rest for his soul."

University spokesman Dennis Brown said McBrien died after a lengthy illness.

McBrien was highly sought out by reporters seeking comment about the Roman Catholic Church, and he was one of the most widely quoted members since joining the Notre Dame faculty in 1980. He also authored 25 books, the most popular of which were "Catholicism," which drew criticism from church officials, along with "Lives of the Saints" and "Lives of the Popes."

McBrien was asked in 1986, when speaking out in favor of the ordination of women, whether he feared church retribution in light of the Vatican forbidding the Rev. Charles Curran from teaching as a Catholic theologian for what the church said was his "repeated refusal to accept" certain church teachings. Curran was a professor at Catholic University of America.

"Do I look afraid to speak out?" McBrien responded.

His book, "Catholicism," was criticized by U.S. bishops in 1985, and again in 1996, who said he had presented some core Catholic teachings as one view among many instead of as the authoritative views of the church.

Church officials said the book maintained it was possible for Catholics to believe Jesus Christ could have sinned; indicated that the virgin birth of Jesus probably never happened; and held that homosexuality, contraception and women's ordination were open questions, with the official church teaching merely being one option.

"While the book could be a helpful resource to theologians looking for a survey of opinions on some question, it might well be bewildering and unsettling for Catholics taking undergraduate courses in theology," the Secretariat for Doctrine and Pastoral Practices said in 1996.

Still, several of his books were considered must-reads by many Catholic seminarians, theologians and parishioners. Along with his weekly column, McBrien also served as the general editor of "The Encyclopedia of Catholicism."

McBrien earned his bachelor's degree from St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Connecticut, and was ordained a priest of the archdiocese of Hartford, Connecticut, in 1962. He earned a doctorate in theology at the Gregorian University in Rome in 1965.

He served as chairman of Notre Dame's Department of Theology for 11 years, and is a past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America.

As a student of Richard McBrien in 1973, my clearest memory was a question in his first lecture: What does it mean to be "holy". My response was that to be "holy" is to be "whole". That was the starting point for his first lecture ... and his course ... on Catholicism as a focus for acknowledging God's presence within oneself and for recognizing God's presence in the world that surrounds. What a teacher ... and what a world he helped me to see!

Richard McBrien was clear in teaching
the models of church among many topics. I wrote to him decades ago to thank him for his books and articles. He took time to reply.
He was a man's man and a priest's priest.

Father McBrien expressed the faith of so many Roman Catholics. His opinions were not extreme; he found the words to express the awesome mystery of God and Church in ways the average person would understand and embrace. He gave humanness to the Church which he so loved. He opened dialogue with anyone and everyone. Years ago, his writings were required reading when I was in Seminary and we were being prepared for work for the Kingdom of God. So much has changed over 35 years, bishops have since dismissed his writings at such a crucial time when his challenge and insight would be so valuable. It was a privilege to attend his wake and thank God for his life and his work.

Rest in Peace

January 26, 2015

The awesome breath of knowledge he displayed in "Catholicism" still serves me so well to this day and has since 1980. In remote Mission schools in Zambia and Lesotho that had no libraries IT was all I needed - just invaluable. With profound gratitude to you, Father and rest now in glorious peace. Br. J Hebert
