John McLaughlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 16, 2016.
John McLaughlin, the legendary television host of “The McLaughlin Group,” died Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, according to multiple news sources. He was 89.

His death was announced on Facebook via "The McLaughlin Group" page. A message from "The McLaughlin Group" family stated:

“Earlier this morning, a beloved friend and mentor, Dr. John McLaughlin, passed away peacefully at the age of 89. As a former jesuit priest, teacher, pundit and news host, John touched many lives. For 34 years, The McLaughlin Group informed millions of Americans. Now he has said bye bye for the last time, to rejoin his beloved dog, Oliver, in heaven. He will always be remembered.”

The political commentary talk show hosted by McLaughlin began in 1982 and continued until his death. The show was featured mostly on station affiliates of the Public Broadcasting Service. At the time of McLaughlin's death, the program featured four political commentators: conservative syndicated columnist Pat Buchanan; conservative political journalist Tom Rogan of The National Review; liberal blogger Eleanor Clift of The Daily Beast; and liberal syndicated columnist Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune.

McLaughlin's final public message to his fans aired Aug. 13 on PBS. The longtime Republican also explained on his show's website that he had missed recent tapings because of poor health.

"Yet my spirit is strong and my dedication to the show remains absolute," he wrote.

McLaughlin was known for his loud and boisterous style when hosting the show. The comedian Dana Carvey, as a cast member of NBC's "Saturday Night Live," parodied McLaughlin in a sendup of his political talk show.

McLaughlin was a Jesuit priest who then became a speechwriter for President Richard Nixon. He moved on to write for the National Review magazine, and he hosted various radio and TV programs until he found great success with “The McLaughlin Group.”

He also appeared in several movies and made a cameo appearance on the television sitcom “Cheers.”

A poem as lovely as John McLaughlin (Sincere Reporter).
Dear John, God Bless you my Dear friend.
As grand as the Beatific Vision will be,

As you made my life so much more livable

Rest in Peace, Dr McLaughlin. I was greatly saddened by the frail sound of his narration last week but take solace that he went down swinging doing what he loved.
I have fond memories of watching the program with my late parents, two less conservative members of the greatest generation, both of whom shared his respect for information and knowledge during an era when pundits can respectfully disagree and NOT talk over each other. My condolences to the panel and production staff.

I started watching John with my Grandfather as a child. It was the first political show I ever laid eyes on. Years later, as I studied Political Science at McGill, I was still watching. I grew up with him and his astute, brilliant political observations and never let go. And even though I never met him in person, so many years and so many hours...so much pleasure...he feels like actual family to me. I loved the man.

I was never absolutely sure of what political allegiance John adhered to. To me, he was an American. And from my perspective, through his socratic (more Aristotelian) and often passionate inquiry into the hearts and minds of others, he got at some actual TRUTH. A lot of truth in fact.

Over the years, I began to formulate an idea that John's questions, predictions and observations indicated a man who subscribed to Classical Liberal, humanist and rugged individualist values. Perhaps I'm wrong. But whatever his political slant, he was a proponent of REASON. A man of the past who still walked the earth -- today. The sort of American that I imagined I would find after moving here. But there are not too many like John.

John set a standard which has never been met in both entertainment and journalism. He showed that ideas...even political ideas could be highly amusing to discuss. And for the most part, his panel could swing and punch but walked away FRIENDS.

I will miss this man and I want to thank him with all my heart, and all those who have supported him all these years. And a special thank you to Eleanor Clift who wrote what I think was the best tribute to him from a colleague that I read amongst many this week. John deserves that and much more.

American news and all journalists and TV pundits owe John so much. But I am just thankful that I was able to learn all that I did from him and his show, his guests. And I suppose we all owe a debt to the Jesuits, and whether you agree with their religious views, they still produce incredible men of genius, power and heroism.

God bless you John McLaughlin! And the incredible country that made you possible.

After "religiously" watching Mr. McLaughlin every week for so many years he became like a family member to his loyal audience. For several months we've seen his health deteriorate and knew this end was not far. You will be extremely missed by the millions of us who so enjoyed your weekly visit. My deepest condolences to his family and friends and to the panelists that got a chance to know him even more than his audience.

August 20, 2016

The only show I religiously looked forward to watching each week and boy did the Internet/YouTube make that much easier. His moderation and the minds he had on the panel from Germond, Kondracke, Barnes, Zuckerman ,Novak, Kingsley, Crowley, Ferrechio and especially Pat Buchanan were phenomenal. Having gone to a Jesuit high school, I like the kind of deep, critical, open debate to arrive at an opinion on a matter. There is and will now be even less in our political media today. If I could explore the surviving panelists to carry-on in someway even via the Internet for perhaps a less frequent but loner period to discuss the issues. Lord knows the world is alive with critical issues. Fr./Dr. McLaughlin may you rest in peace and may the Lord's perpetual light shine upon you.

Joe & Merry Boysen

August 20, 2016

Rest in peace John. You have earned it. You lived up to Heavyweight Champion Jack Dempsey's definition of a champion as a person who "gets up when he can't" right to the very end when you narrated the voice over words for the first program you had ever missed in 34 years and seven months using "the worn out tools" of your vocal chords a final time, putting on your "Sunday best" for the occasion by referring to yourself as Dr. McLaughlin in the only time I have ever heard you use that title, while stoically minimizing your illness by expressing hope for our sake at a time you must truly have been "running on empty"! What a display of fortitude and faith Father McLaughlin, forever to us our "Monsignor", friend, teacher, paragon, beloved one. You went straight to heaven in one instant, with no passport, no delays and no questions asked, since your life was the proof of one righteous soul that God did not waste that week of creation, and that Christ did neither die in vain that day after Gethsemane. We will always remember you and do what we can to preserve your life's work for our McLaughlin Group Family, temporarily lost without our teacher. and needful of a Saturday and Sunday visitor. With deepest respect, Joe & Merry Boysen in Shell Beach California, Saturday, August 20th, 2016 AD Dominus Vobiscum.

I was on his staff when he ran against Sen.John O. Pastore in Rhode Island. A Republican Priest running against an Italien Democrat born on St.Patrick Day that had been in the Senate 24 years.I was in awe of him as he practiced his speeches in that deep voice of his and he would actually ask me what I thought.I was 18 years old and he was asking for my opinion. Although, he lost the election. I think he found his calling.....just making everybody smarter.

John McLaughlin was an important iconic figure. I loved watching "The Group" every week. He and his panel gave us much needed points of view about every important event that happened in the US and those events that affected us world wide.
