Keion Carpenter Obituary
Carpenter, who also excelled as a special teams player, collapsed Dec. 28 and died the following day.
He played for the Buffalo Bills from 1999 to 2001. In 2002, the team traded him to the Atlanta Falcons; he played on that team from 2002 to 2005.
During his professional career, Carpenter had 206 tackles, 14 interceptions, and one touchdown.

He was born Oct. 31, 1977, in Baltimore, Maryland. He played football for Virginia Tech, where he tied a school record for most blocked kicks with six of them.
Carpenter retired from the game three years after having successful spinal fusion surgery. He later created the Carpenter House Inc., a nonprofit organization that helps underprivileged families as they seek home ownership.
Former Hokies coach Frank Beamer released a statement Thursday praising Carpenter.
“Cheryl and I were saddened to learn of the passing of Keion Carpenter," Beamer said. "Keion was one of the rocks around which we built our program at Virginia Tech in the 1990s.
"He was a tenacious punt blocker and a relentless player on defense. … His work with The Carpenter House and other charitable organizations to help those in need truly embodied the Virginia Tech spirit. Our condolences to Keion’s family on the loss of a great Hokie.”

May God bless your entire family during this difficult time. Keion was certainly a true family man and a great spirit. I am praying for peace and understanding to the wife and children. Lord I pray that the kids are strong and doing well as can be. May God give you all strength to deal with this. Keion always helped people and his deeds were always genuine and pure. That enough should make his family smile. I pray for his entire family. I am so sorry to hear this. I knew Keion well and I use to braid his hair in Atlanta and change his flights at AirTran Airways. He was always a true gentleman and he always represented himself as a gentleman. Very caring spirit and always showed appreciation for anything anyone did for him. He spoke at my sons high school as a favor and I truly appreciate him being so kind. Great guy and awesome spirit.

It was beyond shocking to hear the news of Keion's passing. Our church family just experienced a freak accident that led to a woman's death. Answers won't come as to why. We can remember how Jesus wept when he heard Lazarus had died. We can weep, grieve, but always remember Keion's persistence. We can use him as a role model to keep our faith and determination strong to get through this. My thoughts and prayers will be with family and friends and all whose lives he touched. He is seeing the face of God.
