Ronald Mundy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jan. 24, 2017.
Ronald "Bingo" Mundy, a vocalist with the doo-wop group the Marcels who had a No. 1 hit song with "Blue Moon," died, Friday, Jan. 20, 2017, according to multiple news sources. He was 76.

The Odell Robinson Jr. Funeral Home confirmed the death along with family members who spoke with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, which reported the news Tuesday.

Mundy, who lived in Pittsburgh, died of pneumonia.

The Marcels were formed in Pittsburgh in 1959. They were named after a popular hairstyle during that time. They sent a demo tape to Colpix Records, which signed them and sent the group to New York City to record some songs.

One of those songs would launch the band to stardom. Their version of the Rogers and Hart standard “Blue Moon” became a No. 1 smash hit. The famous disc jockey Murray the K played the song 26 times during one of his shows. In March 1961, the song knocked Elvis Presley off the top of the charts.

Later, the group sang the song in the movie “Twist Around the Clock” that featured the singer Chubby Checker. The Marcels also had a follow-up song, “Heartaches," that reached the top 10 on the charts.

After his music career, Mundy drove a bus for the Port Authority of Allegheny County, retiring after 25 years.

His wife, Janet, told the Post-Gazette, “He always had singing in his blood. He loved the oldies, and my kids were all raised on them.”

One of the most depressing days of my life was today! I knew Bingo for years as I was the Director of Operations at the Port Authority and I met Bingo over 25 years ago when I was a new bus operator. I got the group to sing in New York and went to various Pittsburgh Old Record Collectors Club functions. I called Bingo every few months in order to check on him and just got the horrible news today. Life is too short and my dearest of friends left me and my wife and I will never be the same. Rest in peace my dear friend and I will hook up with you, I promise!

Blue Moon----what a song. During my early years in music it was always playing on the radio and it's words are forever in my memory. It was a time when music was at it's best.
