I met Ted Lindsay at Fraser Hockeyland. I was going up the stairs and he was going down . I looked up to see who was coming down and stopped in my tracks. I said" Oh, it's you!" Where he replied,"Oh, it's you!" We both chuckled and Iyelled out"Anyone got a pen?"Just by luck, I had on a Red wing shirt that day.i met him other times and he always had a smile on his face and a story to tell! Rest in Peace in that great hockey arena in the sky!

March 8, 2019

I was born in Kirkland Lake and lived on the same street as Mr Lindsay. In 1950 my best friend and I were hitch hiking to the Kirkland Lake Golf and Country Club to when up came a convertible with 3 gentlemen in the front seat offering us a ride. I mentioned to my best friend that the driver was Ted Lindsay, with Nellie Podolski in the centre seat and Gordie Howe in the front passenger seat as well. We found they were going to the Club and we offered to caddie for them, but alas they were going out for lunch on a business discussion. As I was now living in Windsor I had the opportunity to be invited to lunch with Ted in a Detroit suburb with two of his friends from Windsor. When I related the hitch hiking incident to Mr Lindsay without blinking and eye he said That happened in 1950. I coudn't his recall as he was 91 years of age. As stated by many people he was an engaging conversationalist and a true gentleman. My sincere condolences go out to his wife and family.

Warmest regards, Jerry Zima

I was fortunate to know Mr. Lindsay in my younger years quite well. His son Blake and I were friends and business partners in the early eighties, "Lindsay, Edwards Sport Outfitters". During those days Ted was an officer in our corporation and a constant support mechanism for us in every way possible. Most fans rightfully know Ted Lindsay as a Hall of Fame sports icon which they should. He was that same caliber person in his personal life as well I'd come to know. The old saying goes "Character is doing the right thing when no one's looking", Mr. Ted Lindsay was that in spades!
*Thinking of you guys Blake, Lynn/Lew & Meredith during this time of loss...your father will be missed!

Although growing up in Windsor, Ontario in the late 50s and early 60s I was (and still am) a Devoted Leafs Fan, I always recognized Mr. Lindsay as an amazing player. In later years I came to understand what a kind and generous man he was off the ice. Certainly a life well lived. Rest In Peace, sir, and my heartfelt condolences to the Lindsay family.

I was fortunate to have met both Gordie and Ted in the 1950's at the opening of Northland Shopping Center where they took the time to talk to me one on one. I saw them play numerous times at Olympia. Ted was my hero because he was my size and we were both Left Wingers and loved to get into scrapes. Fast-forward to the early sixties and Mr. Lindsay was the guest speaker at our small Hockey Banquet where I happened to be the recipient of a couple of trophies. While I was walking up to receive the awards, my coach who was up at the live podium with Mr. Lindsay, stated to Ted, that I also led the Team in penalty minutes -- Mr. Lindsay immediately stated " doesn't the high scoring and the penalty minutes go hand-and-hand?" which got the crowd to its feet! What a Great Man!

As a young man in the late 50's, I got to see Ted Lindsay skate, score and lead the Red Wings to Stanley Cups at the Olympia. I watched games with the Original Six televised in black and white on early TV. I managed to get the classic 50's picture of Ted Lindsay autographed. As time past, I visited the NHL Hall of Fame and while in Toronto, and also went to St.Michael's for a Sunday game....to see Ted's picture on the Wall of Fame....at the school's rink...St Mikes players who made it to the NHL. Still later in life, after retiring, while playing pick up hockey and working out at the gym at the Sports Center in Troy, I got to meet and personally talk with Mr. Lindsay. I always admired him as a hockey player...my kind of guy. But, it was in the discussions with him that I met the real MR. LINDSAY...truly a man's man, on and off the ice. He was a man to emulate. ..a hero. A class act. I even named my boxer lab dog TED...and he wears a Red Wings collar...for my favorite hockey player. He was a man to emulate. When I heard the news of his passing, my heart sunk....for the past 60 years I have known and followed Ted Lindsay...it is like losing a father and friend. He will be missed.

In 1969 Ted took me to Olympic Sporting Goods and dressed me up like a hockey player. The equipment was better than I was. I am grateful to him for good advice and guidance as well as wonderful memories including my friendship with his son, Blake.

Ted came to my high school Ste. Elizabeth in Thornhill Ontario in the early 2000s to talk about his experiences starting the NHLPA in the 50s. This story had been chronicled in the book "Networth" and a CBC TV movie "Networth". He fascinated and inspired students for 4 periods with his story of social justice heroism. Once during the day, he turned around to mural of Mother Teresa on the wall behind him and said. "That's my hero". That day was the greatest day of my high school teaching career.

It was a pleasure working with Ted while employed at Chivas Products in the 1990's. He and Marty Pavelich had a plastic molding company Lindsay & Pavelich that Chivas had acquired that caused our paths to cross. Ted was always the gentleman and a professional that treated everyone with respect and honor. I remember clearly the day he and I were bantering and I accidentally hit him in the gut but you would have never known it looking at Ted's face. He was solid as a rock. Never felt it. I was so impressed a man nearly twice my age was that muscular. No flab. Thank you, Ted, for treating me with respect and genuine kindness. You and Marty are a treasure to the city of Detroit and to me personally. My condolences to the family as we pray you are comforted by the Holy Spirit during this time of loss.

I would like Ted`s family to know that my father Leo Decaire ( nickname) Dumi and Deek) from Kirland Lake, Ontario Canada were very good friend`s. My father worked at the Brewers Retail Store in Kirkland Lake and Ted at that time in the summers represented a type of beer. I remember your dad when I was 4 years old he use to come over to our home on Wilson Avenue. He left me a pair of old hockey gloves as I like to play hockey. My father was from the Mattewa Reserve in Mattewa, Ontario. My family have a picture of your dad and him, in the picture your dad has a 1944 Ford, Coupe and my father has a team of horses. I have a home in Florida and I tried to get a whole of your dad but was not successful , Dan Maloney of the Toronto Maple Leafs was a good friend of mine, I tried to get a whole of him for help, but did not get a response, then I found out he died suddenly of cancer. I wanted to meet your dad and show him the picture and talk with him and update him about his friend my father. Sorry it did not happen. It would have made him happy. Please reply if you wish, I am in Florida until now until April 01st, 2019. My dad and I would watch him play. He will be missed by many. tks. My Florida phone number is 1-239-471-0802. Sent through my wife`s E-Mail address.

I met Ted at card shows I did in the 1990s and he was a true gentleman. A couple of years ago I sent him a card to sign and mentioned that I did shows with him in the 1990s and which shows, and he sent a note thanking me for the request and thank my wife who use to help with the autographer signing. A truly sweet man and one who will be missed. Thank you for your kindness and grace.

I met TED and his wife many years ago, at a CHARTER MEMBER DINNER of Mt.Clemens Bank. Over the years we were at numerous locations throughout the Metro-Detroit area, always having sports conversations, never to be forgotten. As years passed, both of us resided in Rochester Hills and were members of St. Anne Parish. He religiously attended the Saturday 5:00 Mass. I'm very fortunate to have autographed collectibles from Ted.
I have a large network of fans and friends, many in the sports world, hoping to be there at the upcoming days with some of us 'old-timers' sharing stories, memories. "GOD BLESS" TED, one of kind in the history of Detroit.
