Joseph Iscovitz was one of the oldest Pearl Harbor survivors, passing away at the age of 103 on July 9, 2019. He was a 25 year old Army Air Corps Sergeant stationed in Honolulu when the Japanese launched a surprise attack on December 7, 1941. He manned a machine gun and fired at the Japanese planes and then helped put up barbed wire on Waikiki Beach. Iscovitz remained in the military until 1958, serving in the Korean War. He was very involved in Pearl Harbor Survivor events and attended the 60th anniversary remembrance in Hawaii.

Here's a toast to the host of those
Who love the vastness of the sky
To a friend we send the message
Of his brother men who fly
We drink to those who gave their all of old
Then down we roar
to score the rainbow's pot of gold
A toast to the host of men we boast the Army Air Corps

I did not personally know Mr. Iscovitz but I saw him in some celebrations on television. His spirit always made me proud to be an American and pass on to my children the dignity and pride for who they are.... Americans. May God take him to his fellow brothers in arms and show them their sacrifice was not in vain. God Bless all of his family and help them through their loss.

The earliest memory I have (at 18 months of age) is looking out the back window and watching the dust rise on a rural dirt road as my father raced to a destination unknown to me, but realizing that there was a house that was filled with many adults, women in tears and men with grim faces. All were crowded around a radio. It was the "Day of Infamy"!

That was a day that men like Joseph Iscovitz entered one of those times in history that any who lived through it will always remember.

Rest in peace, Mr. Isovitz. Thank you for your service!

Thank you, Veteran, for your service to our country. May I offer our sympathy and condolences to your family for their loss. How wonderful that you were here for so many more decades after WWII, and I'm sure they enjoyed having you in their lives for such a long time - which now must seem as if was such a short time. Rest in Peace, Sir.

I was a baby boomer, born to two WWII veterans. Mom was a Wac., and Dad was stationed on the U.S. S. West Virginia on that fateful morning. He never really talked about it for obvious reasons. Like I heard another survivor say some time ago, "For those who weren't there, words cannot describe it, and for those who were there, words are not necessarily". May God give all who mourn the loss of a true American the same grace He's giving me and my Mom to look to Him alone for our greatest need in this life, and especially beyond.......Matthew 11:28-30.......Romans 1:16.......1st Corinthians 15:1-4.......Romans 10:9-13.

I did not know SGT. Iscovitz nor did I serve this great country. I, among many proud Americans am extremely saddened by the news of this great mans passing. I may not have known him or what he endured to keep us safe and free, but I do know he will be greatly missed. It is an understatement to say this country lost a hero.
