Barry Iscovitz Obituary

Barry J. Iscovitz, 90, formerly of Kingston, passed away at his home in Bellevue, Wash., Sunday, Aug. 13, 2023, with his four children by his side.

Born in Reading to Rieva and Nathan Iscovitz, he resided most of his life in Kingston, then wintered/retired in Wellington, Fla. He spent the last three years of his life in Bellevue, Wash., to be closer to family. Barry graduated valedictorian from Wyoming Seminary in Kingston, then attended Wharton Business School and Wilkes College before taking over the family business due to the early death of his father. He was the owner of The Globe Department Store in Luzerne for the next 40 years.

Barry was the true definition of a "mensch," which in Yiddish means "a person of integrity, morality and dignity with a sense of what is right and responsible." Although somewhat quiet and reserved, he had a subtle yet sharp sense of humor. Anyone who knew Barry would say what a kind and wonderful man he was. He never complained or said a bad word about anyone. His wisdom, curiosity and breadth of intellect were exceptional. Barry always knew something about anything that anyone would ask, especially history. He often read two or more books simultaneously and his retention, even at age 90, was remarkable. His passions were reading, painting, classical music, golf and family. Barry was completely dedicated to his wife, Marcie, to whom he was married for 68 years.

Barry was a member of Fox Hill Country Club for over 50 years. He was also a member of Temple Israel and the Jewish Community Center.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Marcella; brother, Jerry Ivers; and grandson, Sam.

He is survived by his daughters, Nancy Iscovitz, Seattle Wash.; Debbie Grossman, Shavertown; Judi Mildeberger, Seattle, Wash.; son, Todd Iscovitz, Seattle, Wash.; sons-in-law, Dr. Ira Grossman and Eric Mildeberger; daughter-in-law, Eileen Bennhoff; and grandchildren, Sofie, Molli (Rothseid), Nate, Annie, Auden and Saul.

Funeral services were private.

I grew up in Luzerne and my parents always shopped at the Globe Store for all our clothing needs and home furnishings. I remember Mr. Iscovitz as a quiet, gentle man but very professional and customer-oriented gentleman. He was always present to lend a hand in the store. Rest in Peace, Sir.
