Sam Davis Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2019.
Sam Davis was a valuable member of the Pittsburgh Steelers 1970s NFL dynasty. He started at left guard, winning 4 super bowls with the legendary team. In 1976, Davis blocked for running backs Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier, helping them become the second pair of teammates in NFL history to each rush for over 1,000 yards in a season. Davis retired after the 1979 season.

Sam became a great friend almost as soon as he arrived in Pittsburgh as a Steeler. He was introduced to me by my aunt Kathleen Holloway. We remained close during those days having great times together. A few years ago I was at Hillman Cancer Center with my father and in walked Rocky Bleier whom I introduced myself to along with my father. We had a great talk and much of it was about Sam whom I hadn`t seen in quite awhile. Rocky told me of all the health problems Sam was having and my heart sank because he was such a great person. RIP ole buddy. Hope to see you on the other side.

I worked at one of Mr. Davis' businesses back in the early 80s. I loved that job! This amazing man came in one day not long after I started working and introduced him. One of the best memories I have of my 20's.

RIP Mr. Davis. Your kindness and smile will be missed.

When my father died Sam took the time to come down from training camp to the funeral home. I will never forget that. My father thought of Sam as a friend. He brought his Super Bowl ring for me to see.

Outstanding combination of speed, power, and skill at the Guard position. Sam was there during the Steelers lean years, and his resolve and textbook execution drove him and his team to greatness during their dynasty. Sam was a reliable, beloved, well-respected, stalwart, key player in a special group of champions.

Rest in Peace, #57.
