Our hearts are heavy, while sharing the passing of "Hop" with the sports world. As a lad, growing up in Spfld. O, #40 was one of our Big hero's, while following OSU football. We are so proud to have shared some fun times with Barb an Hop, and listening to his many great athletic moments. Condolences to the entire Cassady family, and Mr. Cassady's large circle of friends & fans. R.I.P. "Hop". *****

My deepest sympathies go out to your family at the passing of your dear husband, father, and grandfather. It was a pleasure meeting you this afternoon. As a neighborhood friend growing up in the bottoms with Howard, or as we called him then,Red dog I was sorry to see him go. I have many memories of him and the other
guys playing all the ball games and other games that boys played in those days, both in the streets and empty lots in the neighborhood. He was the youngest boy in the neighborhood so he had the devil knocked out of him many times, but he would never concede defeat either in games or fights. He was the most competitive guy I, or any one else ever saw. But he was also one of the best friends one could have. In one of his interviews after winning the HeismanAward, he named all of the guys he grew up with in the neighborhood as being influential in his success as a football player. He said we made him tough. Well, there are more stories than space, so I will just say he was a fine guy as well as a great athlete.

Dear Barb, I was so sorry to learn of Hop's death and my heart hurts for you. I never really knew you or Hop but felt like I did from stories by Barnie and Sharon (my sister). I read once that those closest to us never really leave us and I believe this. My condolences and prayers are with you. Love, Roseanne

Deepest sympathy to your family. My dad (Dick Elgin) and Hop grew up together in the bottoms. My dad had many stories about the two of them. When I read that he had passed I thought I bet the two of them are chatting up in heaven about the Buckeyes and many other sports. God bless your family.

Family Members,
Coach Cassady now belongs to the ages. He was one of Ohio's finest guys.
He often took a couple minutes to talk with fans like me . He was very loyal and
always tried to help young players develop. He was a man of great integrity. We
have missed him in Columbus since he retired. His Fan, Rev. Ron Hooker

A great athlete on the playing field whose greatness off of it was defined by helping others find success in life -- and he always remained amazingly humble in the face of fame while doing so. Job well done, Hop. RIP.

My husband and I weren't born when Howard Hopalong Cassidy played for The Ohio State University. But have seen many of his plays already recorded now and then during sport programs here in Columbus, Ohio. We are BIG Buckeyes fans for many years. I can remember watching his son Craig play for us in our living room television. What a great icon from the 50's who played for Coach Woody Hayes. I can picture your dad, grandad and great grandad sitting in between our two legend coaches Woody and Earle Bruce getting ready to root on our football wins right to the very end when we play The Team Up North hearing this week Hopalong said that was his favorite team to play against.

He was a student of my Grandmother, Marguerite Bentz, who taught Principles of Democracy at Columbus' Central High School. She would take my brother and I to the football games there and we got to see him play!! Most present Columbus folks will know Central as COSI now. The school colors were black and red and they were known as the Central High Pirates.
