HARRY CASTLE Obituary

Harry D. Castle, 47, died of natural causes at his San Diego, Calif., home on June 23, 2009, after a long illness.
Mr. Castle, formerly of DeKalb, Ill., was a 1980 graduate of DeKalb High School and a 1984 graduate of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., majoring in physics. He earned master's degrees from Northern Illinois University in music and computer science and taught in both disciplines at NIU before entering a Ph.D. program and teaching in the music department of the University of California, San Diego.
Mr. Castle was first and foremost a musician and composer of electronic music which had its roots in the improvisation of the American Jazz tradition. He was a keyboard player who loved both acoustic and electronic instruments. While at NIU, he performed professionally from time to time with the Rockford-based Beat Merchants. Later, using computer programs he developed, he created and presented performance art projects nationally and internationally. At the time of his death, Mr. Castle was pursuing his interest in composing electronic works that combined conventional and unconventional sounds in unusual, interesting arrangements.
Mr. Castle never married. He is survived by his parents, John W. Castle of Sycamore and Nancy D. Castle of DeKalb; his siblings, John L. (Nicole) Castle of Compton, Amy W. (Douglas) Haynes of Asheville, N.C., and David B. Castle of DeKalb; seven nieces and nephews, Marie Michelle, Abigail, Rachel, Rebekah and Caleb Castle and Alexi and Eli Haynes. Harry deeply loved his family and his family deeply loved him and they will miss him very much.
A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Harry's life will be held from 5-7 p.m. July 20 at the NIU Barsema Alumni and Visitors Center in DeKalb.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund to benefit students in the NIU School of Music has been established in Harry's name. Memorials can be sent to the the NIU Foundation, Altgeld Hall 135 A, DeKalb, IL 60115.

I have just so sadly learned of Harry's passing, and that he'd been sick. I remember him as a vibrant Cornell student who I'd met during a year of music theory and whose friendship really helped as I struggled with those difficult homework assignments. Outside of class, he shared new musical interests with such infectious enthusiasm that I gave multiple listens to artists I might otherwise have skipped! I regret that we lost touch, though I have often thought of him over the years, especially as I am in music professionally as well. A few years ago I found him online and though we didn't reconnect, I was pleased to see how far he took his longstanding passion for electronic music. I will never forget his happy laugh and quirky humor and wide-open nature. We've lost a great spirit.

I just learned of Harry's passing and
I am deeply saddened. While we had lost touch over the past few years I have always had the fondest place in my heart for Harry. We were college classmates, housemates, and musical bandmates and I will always remember our times together as some of the happiest of my life. Harry was plain and simply and excellent fellow and I will miss him dearly.

I just heard of Harry's passing. We were roommates for three years at Cornell and close friends for many years. I have very fond memories of the road trips that Harry and I took when we drove from Ithaca to Dekalb for Thanksgiving and the great times we had in Chicago, New York City, and of course all our time at Cornell...From studying to happy hour, Harry was just great to be around. He was simply a great guy with a real sense of humor, a passion for music, and a true friend. He was a part of my life that I will always cherish and I will miss him. My heart goes out to the entire Castle family as we have lost a good man.

I just learned of Harry's passing through the Cornell Alumni News and am extremely saddened. Harry and I were housemates for 2 years in college, and I have often regretted losing touch. Amongst our friends, Harry was always considered the most talented, brightest , yet most down to earth. We loved his company and companionship. Many of my best memories of college life involve Harry - swimming with a group in the gorges late at night, watching sunsets from the hill, or just listening to music. It sounds from other posts that Harry's personality never changed and he maintained his great sense of fun. At least I am thankful for that.

October 21, 2009

This is the saddest of news. Harry had such a kind heart and even larger joy of life. Spent alot of time with Harry and friends during the Northern days. May he rest in peace. Peace to the Castle family as well.

Janet and David Parish-Whittaker

October 6, 2009

We just heard Saturday from Harry's mother.

Harry and Janet had worked closely together as a duo, even putting a CD out together, but sadly we'd lost touch over the last few years.

Harry was a brilliant musician, but more than that, he was a sweet man who would always make you smile. We listened to some of his work yesterday and were struck by his sense of fun and whimsy. It was so Harry-ish; those who knew him know what we mean.

That's what we'll always remember about Harry-- someone who could share through music. More than anything, we wish we'd had a chance to get together again with him, but he has left us some of himself through his work.

Dear John, Nancy and Family:
I just read of Harry's passing in the NIU Alumni Magazine ... I'm so very sorry for your loss. I remember him coming quietly into First National Bank on occasion, and John talking proudly about his very original music. I hope you'll take comfort in your memories and what he inspired. Very best regards,

We only learned of Harry's passing this evening.

Although we'd lost touch the last few years, we have wonderful memories of not only our musical collaborations in Chicago, DeKalb and even once at UCSD, but many evenings spent just 'hanging out' in our home. (We just sent our son off to college, and Harry was his 'favorite uncle' back when he was about 2 yrs old...)

We recorded a series of improvisations (percussion with an early version of his live computer systems) before he moved to SD, which we 'released' on cassette; I've been thinking for years that this should be transferred to a digital format; I'll get to work on that and I'd like to share the results with the Castle family.

Harry was warm-hearted, funny, an intuitively creative musician and an overall joy to be with. We'll remember him fondly.

Dear Castle Family,

What a touching and moving rememberance for Harry yesterday. Having known "Little Harry" from Lab School Days to his time at Northern, I have some vivid memories. One comes to mind - all the children in Priscilla Bengs Music class acting out the song Senor Don Gato and Harry was Don Gato - I can see him lustily singing his part and the class chiming in "Meow, Meow" at the almost proper time - a really priceless moment. And then the time in Milly Winns class when all the kids were lined up (sort of) heading out the door and in the confusion one of the children closed the door on Harry's finger and immediately yelled out "I didn't do It, I didn't do it". (Happily, his finger must have healed well). And a later memory - asking Harry to put together the tape of selected music for my husband Paul's memorial service. He and Paul, at an earlier time, had their heads together several times a week in Paul's study over some on -going computer, music project.
I am, at this moment, listening to his CD that he sent me after Paul's death, with fond memories.

Harry was a beautiful young man.

John and Nancy Castle,

Death tears parents from children. Many Christian families who have lost a child experience that Jehovah is with them.
John & Nancy, our dear parents can empathize with your pain, because they have without warning, lost three of their own children.

But they have Hope of the scriptural promise that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.- Acts 24:15

Our family wish to offer our Condolences to your family at this time.
