Mickey Scott Obituary

Scott, Mickey

Mickey Scott, 64, of Binghamton passed away Sunday, October 30, 2011 at his home. Mickey was born July 25, 1947 in Weimar, Germany and moved to the United States at the age of 8 months. He was raised in Newburgh, NY and attended Newburgh Free Academy, where he was a standout athlete. His baseball prowess caught the attention of major league scouts and he was drafted by the New York Yankees right out of high school in 1965. Mickey played for the Binghamton Triplets and the Yankees AA Team. It was there that he met and married his future wife and decided to call Binghamton home. His minor league career included several successful years with the Orioles AAA team and the Rochester Red Wings. Mickey was inducted into the Red Wings Baseball Hall of Fame in 1998 and was recognized as one of the most successful relief pitchers in Red Wing history. His major league career included stints with the Baltimore Orioles, Montreal Expos and California Angels. Mickey is survived by his son Kevin and his wife May, of Fountain Valley, CA, his mother Irmy Scott, of Newburgh, NY, his sisters June Valentino, of Newburgh, NY and Michele Auferio, of Madison, NJ, his brother Peter and his wife Leslie, of Middlehope, NY. Mickey was a unique and wonderful person and was always true to himself. You could count on him to add humor and levity to any situation with his hilarious sayings and limericks and his overall fantastic sense of humor. Mickey loved his family, friends, golf and most of all, life. Please join us in the celebration of Mickey's life, Saturday November 5, from 12 to 3 p.m. at the clubhouse of the Chenango Valley State Park Golf Course, 153 State Park Rd., Chenango Forks, NY 13746. Mickey - You were one of a kind!! You will be missed terribly, but never forgotten. Arrangements are by the J.A. McCormack Sons Funeral Home, 141 Main St. Binghamton.

I played Little League ball with Mickey. He was easily our best player, but he never acted like he was better than anybody else. He was a good guy who liked and was liked by all his teammates and opposing players alike.

Gone way too early. I played Little League with him in Newburgh. Elks Little League. Team was the Hawks. We wore green uniforms. Mickey was easily our best player and far and away the best player in the league. With Mickey leading the way we won everything there was to win in 1960.

Great memories.

I will never forget Mickey Scott, since Mickey along with Richard Billings were my favorite players when I was a child in the early 70s. They were the best players of the "Zulia Eagles" team in Venezuela.

I remember on December 17, of 1971, when he pitch 13 innnings with 40 degrees of temperature at 12 noon. He was an outstanding pitcher.

And on January 9, of 1972 when a crowd of fans of the "Zulia Eagles" team went to receive the players at the Maracaibo Airport, for having managed to qualified for the finals in a Caracas game. Mickey was very happy that day and we even talk to him briefly.

Mickey was my Little League teammate in Newburgh. We were on the Hawks in the Elks League. He was our best player, but he never strutted around as if he was letting us know that. He was the first off the bench to greet you if you did something good. He also patted you on the back and encouraged you if you made a mistake. We didnt have an official captain, but he was our captain. We were so proud of him when he made good in the majors
God must have needed a #1 starter because Mickey went far too soon.
May he Rest In Peace.

Here it is July 11, 2012, and I only now learned of Mickey's passing. He and I played high school baseball in Marlboro, NY, and we were on the 1963 Championship team that season. He was an excellent pitcher and all-around great guy. I remember not only his pitching skills, but also his smile and sense of humor. He made the whole team feel great. I miss you deeply, Mickey, but we'll meet again, I'm sure. Thanks for being a part of my life.
May you rest in the great peace and glory of Our Father in Heaven!

Time is too fleeting...wish I had more opportunities to hear Uncle Mickey's stories and his laughter. It seems impossible that I won't see his car in the driveway when I drive by the house on Vestal Ave. He will be missed. So sorry for Aunt Linda and Kevin! Love, Laura

I was a friend of Mick's and knew him through his son Kevin and his ex-wife Linda. What a great guy and good friend. Kevin, Mick and I played golf out here on the west coast several times over the last 15 years. We always had a great time, especially on Mick's last visit. We were playing golf in Palm Springs for several days. On day two, Mick was driving the golf cart on hole 15 at Escena Golf Course when he came up over a small horizon to find out that there was a big, deep sand trap on the other side. He landed that cart squarely in the middle of that trap and it sank up to its axles. Kevin and I were laughing so hard we dam near had an accident in our pants. Mick, just looked at us like nothing had happened and it was all just part of his normal routine. Good thing there wasnt a marshall nearby as they would have escorted us off the course for sure. It took all three of us to get the cart out of the trap as we all continuied to laugh for the rest of that round and beyond. Mick, you're deeply missed, the good lord took you way to soon. Thanks for being a part of my life. You will always be with us in mind and spirit.

Mickey was my teammate in the Elks Little League in Newburgh, NY in 1960. His talent was evident then, but he was never full of himself. Great teammate- great kid. He is gone way too soon. My deepest sympathies to his family and friends.

I first met Mickey when I was coaching the Binghamton University baseball team in the mid to late sixties. He would join my team members in early spring in preparation for his own professional baseball spring training to follow. What an athlete and ballplayer. His fastball exploded and was so active. I have never seen anyone hit a higher fungo when outdoors on the field. Mick and I often played golf together at Chenango Valley Golf Course and I will not soon forget the day this lefty hit a drive onto the green, over the trees on number ten hole setting up an easy eagle. The next time we played that hole he layed up, you figure, guess that is golf. He often spoke of his son Kevin and how he loved him. I will miss you Mickey!

My heart goes out to Mickey's family it seems like a lifetime ago that I played ball at the mound. Mickey actually saved my life when a cabin we rented caught on fire and he got everyone out safe. You will be missed but never forgotten. Michele M

Dear Kevin, Linda, and Mickey's family,
I am so sorry for your devastating loss. Mickey was one of the kindest people I've ever met. It was a privilege to have him as a neighbor for so many years. There was always something in the refrigerator that Mickey had brought over, and just talking to him would make my day brighter. He will be sorely missed!
