Mrs. Linda Sloan Mundy

Linda Sloan Mundy, beloved wife, mother, and sister, died at her summer home in North Carolina on June 26. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, General Carl Mundy, and their three children, Mrs. Elizabeth Gunter, Brigadier General Carl Mundy, III, and Colonel Timothy Mundy. Her brother, Dr. Benjamin Sloan, Jr., of Plano, Texas, also survives her together with eleven grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Linda was born February 3, 1935, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin Sloan of Waynesville, North Carolina. She grew up surrounded by family and friends in the Smoky Mountains, and while in the fourth grade at Waynesville Elementary School, met the boy who would become the love of her life. Linda attended Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina, graduating in 1957. After college she married her fourth grade sweetheart and began her life as the devoted wife of a newly commissioned Marine Corps officer. Over the succeeding years she steadfastly balanced the needs of her family, raised a beloved daughter and two Marine officer sons and contributed much to enhance the quality of life for all Marine families. In 1991 she became the First Lady of the Marine Corps, and served Corps and country with grace and humility until her husband retired four years later. To those who knew and loved her, Linda was a friend, confidant, ally, counselor, and to her life-long friends, a "sister of the heart." Her warm smile, infectious laugh, wise insights, selfless humility and appreciation for the whimsy in life were but a small part of what made her special. She loved flowers, birds and animals. She brightened the lives of those around her, lived a good and contented life of her own, and departed it gently. She will be missed. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Marine Corps Scholarship Foundation or to the Humane Society or the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals will provide a meaningful contribution to the children of Marine families, or to "all things, great and small" to whom she was so devoted. Linda's life will be celebrated in a service on Saturday, July 6, at 2:30 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church in Waynesville, where she will lie in state from 1:00 until the service time.
