1951
2012
On December 15, 2012, our father and friend, Randy Janes, entered into eternal rest.
Randy was born on February 12, 1951, in Ventura to Earl and Jennie Janes. Shortly thereafter, he moved with his family to Lompoc where he lived until graduating from Lompoc High School in 1969. Initially, Randy dreamed of joining the military and was accepted in the Merchant Marine Military Academy.
It quickly became apparent to Randy that this was not the lifestyle for him and he resigned and returned to Santa Barbara where he was hired as a Police Officer with the Santa Barbara Police Department. Shortly after graduating from the police academy, Randy decided that he wanted to earn his college degree. On March 22, 1980, Randy graduated with honors from the University of California at Santa Barbara with a degree in Law and Society. Up to the time of his passing, Randy would return to UCSB to watch his beloved Gauchos compete in basketball and soccer.
Shortly thereafter, Randy and his first wife, Lynne, relocated to Placerville. Randy was hired as a Police Officer by the Placerville Police Department and he was quickly promoted to the rank of Sergeant. More importantly, Randy and Lynne welcome their two children, Brandon and Crystal, into their lives. Together, the family enjoyed the warm summer nights and cool winter days on their five acre ranch in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
Soon however, the family relocated to Ventura to be closer to family and Randy was hired as a Police Officer by the Ventura Police Department. Randy moved quickly through the ranks and found his calling at the rank of Sergeant. In 2001, he was recognized by the Ventura Police Department as the Supervisor of the Year.
On July 9, 2001, Randy retired from the Ventura Police Department. At the end of his final shift, Randy pulled into the police station for the final time just as a routine burglary call came out. In true Randy form, he decided that he wasn't ready to retire and let dispatch know that he was going to respond to the call. Unbeknownst to him, a surprise party had been planned in his honor and there were close to fifty family members and friends waiting for him inside the police department. His son, who was working as a police cadet at the time, had to run downstairs to the parking lot and convince Randy that he needed to talk to him in the station which gave the dispatcher just enough time to find another officer to handle the call.
Randy reluctantly put his patrol car in park for the final time but was elated to see the love and support that the department showed him for his years of service. Retirement did not suit Randy well and he was hired as an Investigator by the Ventura County District Attorney's Office where he remained until shortly before his passing.
During his off-duty time, Randy enjoyed traveling to Hawaii, running, kayaking, spending time with his grandkids, and serving the Lord.
Randy is survived by his son, Brandon (Tara); daughter, Crystal (Troy); grandchildren, Parker, Taylor, Corbin, and Bryson; sister, Valerie Janes-Morales (Daniel), of Lancaster; brother, Larry Janes of Lompoc; his children's mother, Lynne Davis-Herrod (Ronald); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A memorial service celebrating Randy's life is planned for Saturday, December 22, 2012, at Reality Church (1954 Goodyear Avenue, Ventura, Ca 93003). The service will start at 11 a.m. and all are welcome to attend.

I was so saddened when I heard about Randy. I worked with him for almost 9 years at Ventura PD, and he was by far one of my favorite people there. Always kind. Always fair. I can still remember his briefings. Super nice man. My thoughts now are for his family. The messages here from his daughter, Crystal, speaks volumes to the kind of father he was-and I imagine that will be a legacy that will live on. God bless you all.

What a wonderful and gentle man. I worked with Randy for a short time at the Ralston building when we were both with the DA's office. We shared lunch a few times when a sandwich was too big for either of us and also recipes - particularly those involving cast iron skillets. My heart goes out to his family and I regret not knowing Randy outside of work. Pam Grossman

We are saddened at the news of Randy's passing. He was so good to all the volunteers at the Westside Police Storefront. He taught us patently and with kindness. Never let us down. Made all feel like we were very important to Community Policing. We had a lot of fun also. Thank you Sgt. Janes for your years of watching over the residents of Ventura. R.I.P

I first met Randy when he was the School Resource Officer assigned to La Cumbre Junior High School in Santa Barbara. I was teaching a class called "Youth and the Law" and he was my "go to" guy for contacts in law enforcement.
He touched the lives of so many students both in the classroom and coaching track. One of the highlights for the kids was when he would "bust and cuff" me and tell the kids he'd lost the key.
We became good friends and I had the privilege and joy of going with Randy on his first trip to Hawai'i in 1976. I'd like to think that his later love of the Islands started with that adventure.
Since retirement we have shared occasional lunches and he was a consistent attendee at the La Cumbre Retiree Breakfasts held on the first day of school each year.
We will miss you Randy. Thanks for being such a great friend for such a long time.

Sarge,
What an honor it was to work with you for nearly 13 years. You were one of the men I looked up to at VPD. Always an example, always a mentor, always a kind word of encouragement, a warm smile and a handshake.
I'm grateful that I was able to chat with you this past March. Little did I know it would be the last time we would have the chance to do so.
While I am saddened to learn of your passing, I know that you are in a much better place - free from pain, worries, and sorrow.
God bless you, my friend, and may He watch over your family and loved ones here. Until we meet again, rest well.

I have known Randy for many years. In fact I bought his prized green 1972 Mercury Capri from him. My first car. Randy and my dad Dave Cruickshank worked together on the Santa Barbara Police Department partnered as Night Detectives. They had loads of fun and did some good police work too. Over the years I would run into Randy unexpectedly around Ventura. It was always a pleasure and a joy to see him and hear about the family. I will miss that and I will miss his great smile. Blessings on your family.

We grew up together in Lompoc and both shared the same middle name! As seniors at Lompoc High, we were close friends and a team - President and Vice President of the ASB. I'm so grateful that we got reconnected all these years later and I know that you are in a better and joyful place, but I will miss having you nearby at 70 and 80 and 90, but we will meet again! Watch over your family and friends... and know that you will never be forgotten!

I remember the first time I saw you walk into the library in Lompoc as our "security page". You were so handsome and all the teeny boppers followed you all over the building. You, your sister and your mom and dad became like family for me. You have always been one of the best and will be missed so much. Rest in peace, my friend, rest in peace.

I enjoyed working with Randy in his final assignment as a DA Investigator in the office's Fraud Unit. Randy was good at putting together evidence to help convict the bad guys.
