Dear Riva and all Marcus Family
I was shocked and deeply sad hearing from Karen, Anthony and Jerry Loughlin that Carole passed away from severe stroke. As you may know, we travelled to many places around the world together eg. Canada, USA, France, Austria, Slovenia, Cambodia, Burma, Indonesia, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Thailand. Both of us had such a wonderful time on every trip. She is my best teacher and very special friend. I will miss her forever.

Dr. Marcus has been my child's doctor for 13 years. Our last appointment with her in Oct 2017 she said to us that it would be the last time we see her since my child has aged out of pediatric care. I am deeply sadden by her sudden passing and will truly miss her. She was caring and thorough in our patient care and always made sure we understood our care plans. Truly a great doctor. May the Lord comfort and give her family peace as we morn the lost.

Dr. Marcus took great care of my daughter and of all her patients with the up most respect and professionalism. She was always happy to see her patients and came in with a smile. Dr. Marcus you will be a part of my family forever and you will be missed. My condolences goes out to the family. God bless.

I knew Carole during her earlier years, while she was a resident in pediatrics over at the State University of New York at Brooklyn. We both worked under the guided hand and instructive tutelage of her beloved father, Dr. Joseph Marcus. She was an absolute joy to work with, and it was very clear at the time that she was headed for much greener pastures. It is with an absolute aching heart that I hear the news of her premature passing. May her soul be bound up in the Bonds of Eternal Life, and her may her beloved memory ever be for blessing. May she now rest in Heavenly repose. In heartfelt sorrow, Kenneth C. Sassower, M.D.

It was with great sadness and disbelief I found out the passing away of Carole. I had the honour of being mentored by her in the short time I spent at the CHOP Sleep centre . She was an inspirational teacher and always had such encouraging words for the work I did. Gone too soo. Condolences to the family.

I just learned about Carole's passing, I was shocked and greatly saddened. She was my mentor and my role model. She taught me so much in a brief time that I was visiting Johns Hopkins pediatric sleep service. Carole was brilliant, compassionate, kind, warm and funny. She was a hard worker and devoted physician. I'd like to offer my sincere condolences to her family, especially Dr.Joseph Marcus, who's also my mentor. She will be missed and remembered forever.

I just found out that Dr. Carole Marcus passed away and wanted her family to know she will be deeply remembered by my son, Jon, and I. She was a pivotal part of Jon's life and one of the reasons he's able to enjoy some actual quality of life as a teenager. She was the only person that believed me when I came to her all those years ago to explain that something wasn't right with my son. She believed me right away. We respected each other and she always made me an equal contributor and knowledgeable of the options available and I never felt forced to choose any one plan of treatment. She wanted as much as I did for Jon to have a greater quality of life. She was more than a physician to us because she changed my son's life! Only those who suffer from Narcolepsy can truly appreciate the trials and tribulations suffered with this diagnosis and she understood completely. Please RIP Dr. Carole Marcus and thank you for being a part of Jonathn and I lives. You will be missed!!!

It was with disbelief and great sadness that I found out about Carole's passing. I had the honour of being under Carole's mentorship, and she inspired me to learn more and more about paed sleep. She was a great tutor and speaker, and always found time to chat about non- work related stuff even on a busy week. We will all miss her greatly. Deepest condolences to her family and loved ones during this difficult time.

As with so many others, I was shocked and very saddened to hear about Carole's passing, I only heard about it yesterday so apologize for this late note of condolence. I have known Carole for many years as a colleague, collaborator and friend. Her professional reputation was one of integrity, honesty and productivity. She added so very much to what we have learned about sleep apnea in children over the past 15-20 years. Personally, she enjoyed an adventuresome life and was not afraid to place herself in unfamiliar surroundings. She was an excellent teacher from every aspect - student, mentor and public speaker. I loved attending her presentations which always held the attention of her audience. She was inclusive of data published from all around the world even though the work she supervised from her laboratory alone would have been enough to keep at the audience interested. Carole was kind and certainly appeared to be unaware of her "stardom- like" reputation in the "sleep world". She had a warm and welcoming smile and made everyone around her feel comfortable. I will miss chatting with her at the annual SLEEP meetings. My sincere condolences at your deep loss.

To Carole's family and friends.
My sincere condolences. I had the great pleasure of listening to Carole give a keynote address at the Canadian Sleep Society conference in Calgary in April this year. This was the first time that I had the opportunity to introduce myself to her as a fellow "Witsie" and to thank her for her excellent presentation, research and clinical practice in paediatric sleep medicine. It was a proud moment for me. Baie dankie vir alles en alles van die beste. I was very sad to read this news.

It is with shock, sadness and disbelief that I send condolences to Carole's family. Carole was such a nice, warm person, a wonderful mentor to her trainees, a committed physician and scientist. It was a pleasure working with her when I was at the Penn CTSA and I always enjoyed hearing about her travelling adventures and her efforts to keep fit and commit to causes (like the one where she ran up and down stairs many many times :)).

To the Marcus Family, I just heard the sad sad news of Carole's passing. I remember her first and last days at Hopkins, and actually just emailed her. Carole was the best woman I ever met. Her intelligence, kindness and sense of humor were just some of her best qualities. We met in 1991 and I became her research tech at JHH. She was a great teacher and mentor and I realize my heart is broken at this loss. Even though we haven't worked together for years, she still took the time to wish me Happy Birthday every year and checked in when I had any big events in my life.I am going to miss her as long as I live. My condolences to all of her family.

I knew Carole as a friend, a neighbor and a confident. Her loyalty, her wit, and her kindness was the ultimate of pure human goodness. Carole used to give money to a homeless man who always had his cat by his side.
She lived everyday to its fullest and with such passion. My dear fiend Carole was taken too young -
Her adventures were many - she lived 100 years worth of life, and she will live in my heart forever, as she was a woman like no other woman I have ever encountered.
My deepest sympathy to her wonderful parents, siblings, niece and nephews and cousins whom she loved so dearly and so deeply.

Carole was my mentor in Hopkins. I went there with almost zero knowledge in sleep medicine. Like almost everyone else who joined her unit, I was reborn as a pediatric sleep doctor. Her passion was truly infectious. I was so lucky to meet her in my life, to have her top-notch guidance in my career and academic work, and to have her as a very good friend in life. I will never forget her smile, coming out so naturally from her beautiful heart.
The last time I met her, I told her I had been lazy for quite a while. She said nobody would die regretting not working hard enough in his life. She has so much intuition and contribution to the field, I keep saying she is the mother of pediatric sleep medicine.
I miss her so much!!!

I have had the opportunity to interact with Carole as a student (as a resident and as a fellow) and as a collaborator. In both instances, it was immediately apparent that she was an inspiration to pursue scholarship in the field of Pediatric Sleep and Breathing disorders. This is a big loss for our small community but I hope we can carry her inspiration and legacy in our work. I think that would be our biggest tribute to her.

I am saddened to the core on hearing this morning of Caroles passing. I always felt privileged to have had Carole as a co-worker over many years at CHOP, and have a wealth of wonderful memories of my interactions with her. I always enjoyed her unstoppable spirit and energy, her array of knowledge and finely tuned insights, and her interesting adventure stories. I was witness to many of her hugely successful mentoring efforts with young researchers. She was a wonderful person and the world has suffered an enormous loss. Thank you Carole for being you, for being there. My deepest sympathy and condolences.

I started working with Carole before I ever met her. When I came as a fellow in 1991 to Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, Carole just completed her fellowship and started a faculty position at Johns Hopkins University. Nevertheless, I was shown a complicated device created by Carole and the technicians of the PFT lab made of transparent plastic with all different pipes, hoses, dials, and knobs on it- as well as few funny stickers Carole attached to attract the children that were studied. This was the Ventilatory Responses device known as Caroles BOX. The reviewers of the last paper Carole just submitted requested additional data to enhance the manuscript. So there I was recruiting children to her study together with Drs. Gozal, Keens, and Omlin.
Carole left us suddenly and prematurely. It seems to me as if Caroles BOX still exists. This time it contains all the knowledge, tools, and ideas Carole encountered diligently all the years with many colleagues and trainees around the country and world that will continue to make sure children breathe better every day and every night.

Carole was a wonderful mentor. She was an esteemed figure in the field, yet she was always open and approachable. Part of the tragedy in Caroles passing lies in the brilliant success of her life. She was a tremendous colleague, valued mentor, and good friend. The field of sleep medicine, we who practice it, and so many patients worldwide benefitted from her dedication, hard work, good sense, knowledge and insight. Yet, Carole knew that life is about the journey as well, not just the goals. Carole was a role model to so many people, helping many of us to contribute something we could be proud of, and to enjoy it along the way. She will be missed.

It is impossible to think of pediatric sleep medicine without thinking of Carole. She played such a vital role in this community and her loss at such a young age is inestimable. She more than anyone else, helped to bring the fact that children have sleep problems to the forefront.

We are deeply saddened by the loss of Carole's leading light in the field of paediatric sleep medicine. Her strong leadership was without border, reaching to our corner of Australia and beyond. Carole moved from being a name held in awe due to her many sentinel papers that we refer to daily, to a friend and colleague through the CAP-S study. Her calmness, personal touch and professionalism in the conduct of a multi-centre international study will be long remembered, including coming to Melbourne in person in 2008 to discuss logistics for the study. Carole was also an invited speaker to the Australasian Sleep Association conference held in New Zealand in 2010, and stood out for her attendance at every session and active participation in discussions. This speaks to her commitment to our field and her personal values. Her high standards, clear thinking and commitment to patient care were an inspiration. She will be greatly missed.

Carole has influenced a wide group of specialists in Paediatric Sleep Medicine across the world. For those of us in Australia who have known Carole, our admiration for her only increased after working with her. I am so heartbroken for Carole, her family , Penn Sleep, and the entire Sleep community. Carole was a true "triple threat" in academic medicine--outstanding researcher, clinician and educator. Her commitment to mentoring and career development of junior trainees and faculty are beyond measure. And then there was her deep and unwavering commitment to children. In addition to being a pediatric sleep "rock star," Carole had a quick wit and wonderful sense of adventure. We will honor her legacy of stewardship in pediatric sleep medicine. My heartfelt condolences to her family and friends who I know meant so much to her. I worked closely with Carole for over 10 years in research studies that only came to fruition because of Carole's passion for finding better ways to treat children with sleep apnea. Carole was one of the most dedicated, smartest, practical, ethical, and effective scientists I have worked with. Her desire to make a difference for her patients was her driving energy. Her intelligence and experience, and concern for children's health, influenced every decision she made. She was fiercely loyal to her staff, colleagues and mentees. She was a generous and kind person who also knew how to enjoy life and shared her joyful approach to travel, the arts and living with her friends. I will think of Carole every day as I try to live up to her standards and help carry on some of her work.

I just met Dr. Joseph Marcus playing bridge a few weeks ago. We spoke about his daughter Carole, as I had worked at CHOP and knew of her. My heart breaks for you and your family for this terrible loss. Please accept my deepest sympathy. Sharon Greis

I was absolutely heartbroken to hear the news this morning. Carole was one of the first faculty members I worked with at CHOP and I always admired her passion for her work and her spit-fire personality from day one. She was also always highly respectful and supportive of me and my career.

I am sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathy and my condolences.
I am a Pediatric Pulmonologist from Barcelona, Spain. I was working with Carole Marcus for 2 years in the field of sleep pathophisiology. I learnt from her to keep working hard to improve sleep respiratory disorders in children. She will always be in my memory. Thank you Carole for everything. We will miss you. Es un día muy triste, no te olvidaré jamás. Espero que te vaya bien allá dónde estés. Helena Larramona
