I will never forget Anthony Tony Cannatella. We went to school and church at St. Joseph's every day. Even though we were not in the same class and had years between us, we were very close and very good friends. He was in 8th grade when I was in 3rd. We went to Mass every day and yes, he tried to make me laugh in church!I always feared we would get in trouble. Some how we never did get caught.
He was very nice to me and very protective (go figure :) ). I think we will continue to be protected by him in heaven.
He loved to give me advice. I remember one of the best tips this 13yr. old boy gave me. He told me, that if ever any one wanted to play a card game with me, make sure it's not called "52 pick-up"!
My deepest sympathy goes out to his whole family and all of his close friends. Try to have peace in the happiest memories.

I am so very sorry to learn about the passing of Tony Cantella. I was honored to have met him 2 times and shared drinks with him while he and his family drove all the way to Alabama to visit his friend Derick Shumaker. At the time my son Justin was in the band.
He was a wonderful person and a cops cop. I was proud to have called him my friend. As a retired cop myself from Ga, I really had high regards for his law enforcement career. God Bless his soul and I pray That Father above helps with the pain of his family...

He called me BOC. I remember those early days of my career in the Third District. We worked together for a short time, but I was not the man you were looking for. You needed an officer with True Grit and you found that in Officer Earl. Everyone called ya'll Starsky and Hutch. After I transferred to the crash truck, EMS, I lost track of you and Earl. I know ya'll were making a lot of arrests because your names were always in the press. You will be sorely missed and it was an honor to serve with you as an officer and a friend.

Tony, you will be sadly missed by your family and friends. I know that you were in fact, a "Cop's" cop when you were in the 3rd and I was in the 6th during the "70's". I know that you will be standing "Guard" next to St Peter at the Gates of Heaven to greet the rest of the NOPD family and friends when our time comes. I also know that you will always be watching over the Police Officers of the NOPD . God Bless You, my friend!

TO THE CANNATELLA FAMILY:
DEPUTY SUPERINTENDENT CANNATELLA WAS IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD, "A COP'S COP". HE BEFRIENDED ME IN THE EARLY 1980'S DURING A MARDI GRAS PARADE ON CITY PARK AVENUE, HE ALWAYS REFERRED TO ME AS "MUSIC MAN" BECAUSE OF MY CAREER AS A BAND DIRECTOR AND A JAZZ MUSICIAN. UPON JOINING THE NOPD RESERVE DIVISION, OUR FRIENDSHIP GREW PROFESSIONALLY, AND EVEN CLOSER DURING MY OWN BATTLE WITH STAGE 4 NON-HODGSKIN'S LYMPHOMA WHICH I SUCCESSFULLY OVERCAME, HE WILL ALWAYS BE REMEMBERED AS A DEDICATED OLD SCHOOL POLICE OFFICER, I'LL PERSONALLY REMEMBER HIM AS "THE WIND BENEATH MY WINGS"; A TRUE INSPIRATION TO ANYONE WHO'S EVER WORN THE BADGE OF THE NOPD.

We come from families of average class,
with nerves of steel and hearts of glass.
To save a stranger on his last breath,
or sometimes being the angel of death.
It's only a myth we never cry,
For how many must we watch die?
As the years passed, we have stood alone,
Our eyes saddened, our faces of stone.
We are the most love, critisized, and hated,
But, the sorrow and pain is never faded.
We will give our limbs, our life, not knowing where,
But, no one will cry or even care.
When society has failed and turned to a flop,
The question is asked, "Where is the Cop?"
Best Friends Forever!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.
Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."
It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.
God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.
When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.
I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.
There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.
If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.
So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.
And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

It was with great sadness that I learnd of Tony's passing. He was, truly, larger than life. It was my honor to lead a crew of police officers from Michigan to work with Tony and his officers in the 6th District immediately after Katrina. He was both gracious and hot tempered, dedicated to the people of the district and to those under his command. I learned much from him over those few weeks working under great pressure.
My sincere condonlences to Diane and all of your family.
