GIO BIONDI Obituary

BIONDI--Gio. Painter, photographer and armchair historian, Gio Biondi passed away on August 7, 2015. Gio was born in Genoa, Italy on June 9, 1932 and moved to New York City with his young bride Anna in 1962. During the next 53 years, he devoted himself entirely to his painting, his photography and eventually to a book on early American history. All his life, he never lost his sense of wonder nor his ability to see life through an artist's eyes. His curiosity and keen eye for the ironic and unusual are reflected in his photos of Manhattan street scenes and his surrealist oil paintings. He leaves behind Anna, his daughter Gianna, his son-in-law John, his brothers Marco and Lillino, his grandchildren Evander, Aidan and Ariana, as well as many more beloved family members and friends both here and in Italy. New York City is a little less interesting without that ever-inquisitive elderly man wandering its streets, a camera in one hand and a cane in the other. A memorial service will be held at the home of his good friend John Ziegler, 60 East 12th Street, on Sunday, September 13, 2015 from 3-5pm.

In 1986 I had a job in the SOHO gallery where you were showing your amazing work. I was enchanted by the surreal images, and by you. Thank you.

Gio was truly a unique man. Not only was he funny, intelligent and highly creative, but he had a curiosity for life. Anything that the average person would find dull and simple, he would look deeper to find it's true meaning. He was the most philosophical individual I have and probably will ever meet. And I thank God that I have that part of him inside of myself. Gio, I will see you in the next life. Rest in peace Nonno.

Dear Giorgio,

I met you several times: in your home, in the airport. in Battery Park, in Anna's place and lately in the hospital. I met you in Winter and in Summer; I met you holding your camera and writing a note. I met you fifteen years ago as well as few days ago. I always found you to be consistent in your love for your family, and in your search for creativity, in your respect for society, in your admiration for friends and in your personal faith in God.

I miss you and I will pray for you.

hai lasciato? Eppure qualcosa presagisti, mesi fa,parlando
di tuo nipote Gionanni!!! Rimane in me e Rossella
Avevi ancora
tante cose da fare e da sistemare appena saresti tornato
a casa.
Vogliamo ricordarti sempre cosi.
Rossella e Lillino

Caro zio Giorgio,

During my last stay in New York I had the great privilege to spend precious and unforgettable moments in your company. Together with my childhood memories, captured in many of your black and white family photos, I will treasure all the thoughts we shared during those pleasant hours, and I will never forget the message enclosed in your said and unsaid words.
It is not a secret between the two of us because the script of your life IS your message.

Many beautiful words have been written about you.
Even if they follow different paths, they all seem to go in the same direction. What is clear is that you played a significant role in the lives of all the people who met you. Your sense of humor, your never-ending enthusiasm, your immense curiosity and desire of knowledge, your rich imagination, your enviable gift to appreciate small and apparently insignificant things, your ability to find beauty even where nobody else could see it, and above all, your passions have not gone unnoticed. In a way or in another you left an indelible sign in our lives.
Every time I will read about New York, USA History, US politics, Art and Photography it will be as if you were sitting next to me. Words such as passion, imagination , knowledge, curiosity will always bring you to my mind. And when I go back to New York, I will certainly walk to 226 East 10th Street and step into all the Barnes and Nobles book shops in the city, sit there for a while, get a magazine and read it. For sure I'll buy at least one book each time, not any book but one that would remind me of you: a zio Giorgio-like book.
I am really happy and grateful you were part of my life.
Mi mancherai tantissimo.
Con infinito affetto
Giovanna

A Gio Biondi
Un abbraccio Francesco Cuomo

Gio loved family holidays. He seemed to be unfazed by the hustle and bustle surrounding him, and he would comment....the children.....they are so beautiful. He was a gentle soul who greeted each day with enthusiasm and optimism. We will truly miss him.

Dear Zio Gio, I will bring with me all life long many great memories of you. Since I was a little child you made me fell special and now that I have grown up I keep with me this feeling and the inspiration in life that you transmitted to me about beeing free. I always thought about you as a free spirit and I have learnt that the only way to be happy and free is following your passion and dreams. And so I will do. Your forever Elsa

I love to tell the story of when Gianna told Gio that she had started dating John, whom she'd met at Georgetown. Gianna talked about John's intelligence, kindness, and wit, but Gio had just one question for her: "Does he have a good IMAGINATION?" He was a man who valued imagination and creativity above all else, and he leaves behind not only a beautiful family and loving friends, but a wondrous body of work that will last forever. He will be missed.

Ciao Giorgio,

Daddy - I hope you like the obituary I put in the N.Y. Times for you. You were the consummate New Yorker and deserved recognition in one of your favorite newspapers. We will miss your eccentric sense of humor, your imaginative creations and your enthusiastic outlook on virtually everything; but most of all, we will miss you. Ti amo, Papa'. Baci, Gianna
