Vencil Mares Obituary

MARES, Vencil Vencil Mares was born in the Cistern-Kovar area of Fayette County on November 10, 1923 to Stan and Lexie (Zimmerhanzel) Mares. He passed from this life on November 24, 2019 in Taylor. Vencil served bravely as a medic in the 102nd EVAC unit that landed in Normandy in the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central Europe. He also fought in the Battle of the Bulge. He earned the Bronze Star, an award for meritorious action, for serving in five battles. He never forgot those that were lost in combat. He was so very proud of his oldest great grandson that followed in his footsteps and is an Army medic, SPC Kyle Mares. He opened Taylor Café in 1948 and was an icon in the barbeque world. He has been featured in numerous publications, including Texas Monthly and was once featured in a Super Bowl Chevrolet truck commercial. Vencil was proud and honored to have recently received the Key to the City of Taylor along with the mayor's proclamation of declaring November 10th, "Vencil Mares Day". Vencil will be missed by all he has left behind, but all those that have gone before him get ready, because the pits will be fired up in Heaven! Vencil was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Fred and Daniel Mares; and sister, Della Brosch. He is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Edith Remmel; son, Steve (Jan) Mares; daughters, Cynthia (Denny) Williams and Betty Carol Leinneweber; grandchildren, Tod (Tiffany) Mares, Stephanie Woo, Chari (Scott) Matthijetz, Blake (Erica) Leinneweber, and Misty (Wade) Ujehly; great grandchildren, Kyle (Katy), Cash and Caden Mares, Doliver Brilliant-Woo, Saphire Brilliant, Piper Ujhely, and Carter and Brendan Leinneweber. A service to celebrate Vencil's life will be held at 10:00am on Saturday, November 30, 2019 at Providence Funeral Home. Burial will take place at 11:00am on Monday, December 2, 2019 at St. Cyril & Methodius Cemetery in Cistern. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Cyril & Methodius Cemetery Fund, PO Box 186, Flatonia, TX 78941 or American Legion Taylor Post, Graham T. Luhn, Taylor, TX 76574.

I first met Vencil in the mid-1970s while on a BBQ run. Our group stopped at Louie Muellers first, then headed to Taylor Cafe for "dessert" of sausage. TC became a regular stop for years afterward. And, Vencil and the TC catered the bbq meal for my wedding reception in 1985.

RIP Vencil Mares, you darned sure worked hard enough in your life to deserve a bit of peace!

I moved to Taylor in 2014 . The Taylor Cafe was the first restaurant I ate at after a neighbor mentioned they had great food . The chopped sandwich and beans were a frequent and regular treat when I didn’t feel like cooking . Mr Vencil was always there and waved at me across the bar . I was very sad when I heard he had passed . Thank you sir for 5 years of good BBQ and a friendly smile -Pam Moore

I took the family out to Vincels one afternoon for dinner and asked Mr. Mares about his time in WWII. He took me back into his office and started showing me some pictures and telling stories. About an half an hour or so later, my son came back there and said " Dad, Mom's ready to go home". I could have stayed there listening to him for a few more hours. I knew he was a medic in WWII, I didn't know he fought in the Battle of the Bulge! I loved going there...the tractor seats used for seating at the counter, the smoke stained walls...truly a Texas institution. Thanks for the memories and great BBQ.

I can just imagine the reunion in heaven with all your friends! My mom and dad were especially happy to see you! I have known you for over 50 years - heck you even employed me while in high school to help with your catering. You pushed me to continue my education after I lost my father at the age of 15 - you instilled good values, talked to me like a father would and for that I am forever grateful. I will miss the hugs and conversations and of course your awesome BBQ. Rest In peace Vencil - until we meet again. Love you!

I had the pleasure of meeting Vencil back in 2012 as The Taylor Cafe is one of the stops on The BBQ Trail.I enjoyed his wonderful brisket as well as a complimentary link of his legendary turkey sausage.Or conversation started on our shared Czech heritage & his WW2 service. After two to half hours of listening I reluctantly had to leave as my schedule didn't allow me to stay any longer.I have visited Vencil every November since then the last time on Tuesday November 5 ,2019.I asked him to retell many of his World War II experiences just to make sure that I had correctly remembered them.I am so grateful that I did that. Each year it got a little more difficult to hear him as his voice became softer. I would just sit closer to him so that I could hear him. Thank you Vencil for your heroic service to our country,& Thank you so much for decorating my life by sharing your experiences with me.I will miss you but you will always be with me.

Always present at his Taylor Cafe on the times when I was in the area and had stopped in for a bite of his BBQ and his gentleman manners. I can appreciate his taken time to talk to my nephew when I had him with me and him giving him a signed news article about himself. I know I'll miss him being there when I stop in again but not near as much as his family, friends and the citizens of Taylor will. Thank you Vencil for your service to your country and your town.

The world has lost another great human. Vencil Mare is my 2nd cousin on my father's side. I always enjoyed our time together whether it was at the Cafe, family reunions, or when he would cater SPJST events my father would hire him for. His food, his stories, his laugh, and our family history will be forever treasured in my heart and mind. Go rest high, soldier; you've served your time. God bless Vencil and the entire Mare family.
