CHARLIE McGEE Obituary

McGEE, JR., CHARLIE H.

Gainesville - Charlie H. McGee Jr., Major, USMC, Ret., age 94, died at home on Sunday evening attended by his family, following a brief illness.

He is survived by his two children, Nancy Capo of St. Augustine and Charlie III of Gainesville, his five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Charlie's passions were his wife Jean, golf, and aviation. By age 7, his heart was set on being a pilot. The Marine Corps provided him that opportunity, serving from 1936 to 1960. At the outbreak of WWII Charlie was sent to flight school at Pensacola and became a flying sergeant. He received his commission to Lt in the Pacific, flying material in and wounded men out of Guadalcanal. After the war he was assigned pilot of the Commandant for the Marine Corps, Generals Vandegrift and Cates. Charlie served during the Korean war where he participated in the Chosin Reservoir Campaign.

After retirement from the Corps, Charlie flew as an executive pilot out of California, then in 1970, moved his family to St. Augustine. Charlie and Jean moved to Gainesville in 2005. Charlie is known for his ready smile, humble spirit, and sense of humor. He will surely be missed.
