Wanda Green Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 13, 2001.
For almost 30 years, Wanda A. Green followed her childhood dream. "As a teenager, she always wanted to fly, so she finally got her wings," said her mother, Aserene Smith.

As a young woman, Wanda Green sought her mother's blessing to become a flight attendant. Though Aserene Smith was hesitant, she finally relented, and Wanda Green became one of the first African-Americans to join United Airlines as a flight attendant, according to her mother.

Green, 49, was aboard United Airlines Flight 93 when it was hijacked and crashed in Pennsylvania on Tuesday.

A mother of two--Jennifer, 21, and Joe Benjamin, 18--Green loved to travel and regularly planned trips to Europe.

Her mother spoke to her the night before the doomed flight. "I said `I love you and I'll see you tomorrow,' and that was it."

Wanda Anita Green, 49, loved to help

Whether she was listening to neighbors at their front gates in Linden, befriending the families she helped to find homes as a real estate agent, or comforting children during rough landings as a part-time United Airlines flight attendant, Wanda Anita Green delighted in helping others.

Green, 49, was an earnest listener who never judged, said her longtime friend and fellow flight attendant Sugar Manley.

"She would stay up all night with you, she just cared for your soul, your spirit," said Manley.

As a deacon at Linden Presbyterian Church, Mrs. Green visited people in local hospitals, and volunteered her time for church activities, said her daughter, Jennifer Green.

Mrs. Green adored dancing the cha-cha and the slide, said Manley, but she wouldn't buy herself new dancing shoes unless her children each had two pair.

"Oh, she would sacrifice it all for her children," said Manley. "Her shoes might have had a slight hole in them, but she wouldn't do for herself. Her kids came first."

Mrs. Green, who worked as a United Airlines flight attendant for 29 years and was getting ready to retire, was aboard the hijacked United Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco when it crashed in rural Pennsylvania on Tuesday. Mrs. Green had planned to visit her mother in Oakland, Calif.

"Wherever she went, she made a friend, she really cared about people," said Jennifer Green.

Mrs. Green grew up in Oakland and married and lived for several years in Rockland County, N.Y., before settling in Linden.

After she earned a real estate license in 1996, Mrs. Green flew less frequently, and she worked as an office manager and agent at NorthStar Realty in South Orange.

In addition to Jennifer, Mrs. Green is survived by a son, Joe; her former husband, Joe Green of Stamford, Conn.; her parents, Francis and Aserene Smith of Oakland; sister and brother-in-law Sandra and Aristeed Jamerson of Antioch, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law Tommy and Tammy Smith of Fairfield, Calif.; nieces Arion Jamerson of Antioch, Calif., and Portia Smith of Fairfield, Calif.; nephew Frank Jamerson of Antioch, Calif.; and father-in-law Joe Green of Queens, N.Y.

A candlelight memorial service will be held Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. at the Linden Presbyterian Church, 1506 Orchard Terrace in Linden.

Peace and blessings my friend twin Wanda Smith, who grew up with me on Myrtle Street, Oakland. CA, and taught me how to slow dance for school dance. I will never forget you, your father Frank, Mom Ring, and brother Tommy. It's me Cornor Alexander Jr the Mailman's son. We all had a crush on your twin sister Sanda Smith and you. This was so unfair, feeling soo sad everytime I think about this event. I spoke very well on your behalf at Evergreen Baptist Church at your memorial. I was the last to speak and I had them on their feet with applause. I did you proper my friend, take care. Cornor!!

Last night I had a dream of a Dove flying and it was flying towards me. After the Dove flew to me I saw her face with a beautiful bright light smiling at me. When I woke up I look at my phone and realize that today was August 22nd which is her birthday. Happy Birthday to my step mother Wanda Green who is a beautiful Angel. Wanda I love you and I miss you so much. Enjoy your birthday in Heaven with God and the rest of the Angels in Heaven. I Love You ❤

Wanda & I were very good friends. We lived in northern NJ & flew out of EWR. She hadnt started her family back then, but she was a very good wife.

Wed fly trips together, shopped at the GSP, went to garage sales, etc. She was one of the nicest persons Ive ever met & would do anything to help friends & others. I never heard her say a bad word about anyone... she was always very positive. She was a very good listener, independent, kind, caring & always had a smile on her face.

Unfortunately over the years, we lost touch with each other, but I always thought about her. Id just close my eyes & see her smiling at me.

Wanda Greene was an Angel!

RIP my old friend. I love you still!

Wanda, I never forget about you. Mom was very sick this week, and I thought of you because of the times we would talk about family and how they should be our priority in life. Things have improved, and I can now write to say how much you touched everyone you met. Everyone you helped...everyone you befriended. You had a life of love, and it will always continue. Thank you...rest now...your exhausted passenger from seat 8F...always flying home to the bay.

I met Wanda's sister and Brother in Law in September 2001 at a truck stop in Pennsylvania, I was on my way home from serving at the World Trade Center doing rescue work, they were looking for closure, thought I'd been at the crash site. I prayed with them, said I'd never forget Wanda nor them, to this day, the Green family has been in my prayers, God Bless! and God Speed!

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds (Psalm 147:3)

I think of your children often, and your family, on how they are doing at this time, as i can only imagine, while remembering such loving happy times with you,Ms.Green, east and west coast family of yours. We,your neighbors were so blessed to have you, as our neighbor, for as long as we did.
-
Before my parents moved and retired out of linden,n down south, and i later followed, for some time, almost each year, i would go 1 to 2 blocks away from where i lived, and leave a single colored beautiful rose for you, and i would say the lord's prayer, and a silent prayer for you, Ms.Green...(Not related to you)

but we share the same last name, but we spell it with an"E" at the end,and we were all neighbors, over there off Grier Ave. and Mack Pl., a long time.I often wonder how your children are now doing, and pray they are doing alright. You're still remembered, Ms. Wanda Green, as i always put on FB(FACEBOOK) msg., dedicated to you on or the week of 9/11, with the beautiful photo of the LINDEN,NJ memorial dedicated to you near where we all resided at a long time.

All GREAT WOMEN/HEROES/Wonderful People shall never be forgotten, like you.

Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted (Matthew 5:4)

I pray for your continual eternal peace, gone too soon, was way too young when you went to heaven,
before your time, but you're still LIVING through your beautiful children and entire family, each time they have a happy beautiful rememberance of their beloved treasured Wanda Green, and your neighbor,
the GREENE FAMILY, shall forever, remember you as well, Ms.Green... God bless your family...
God bless the other heroes on Flight 93. God bless America..."

Wanda was an amazing woman. As a realtor, she helped my then fiance find his 1st home in NJ. I recall us sitting at the kitchen island looking at my wedding album . On her next visit, she arrived with a wedding gift in hand. It was a very pleasant surprise. Wanda was in the process of helping us search for our home together. Unfortunately, it became a task she was not able to complete. You see...as long as their was breath in her, she did what she said she would do. I admired her so much and today I admire her even more! Ten years ago, you were on the wings of UA Flight 93 heading home to San Francisco, but God gave you a better set of wings - angel wings - to come home. I miss your smile and laugther, but heaven has an angel who is smiling on all of us who remember you. God Bless your family.

Wanda, I miss you stopping by at 4 am and waking me from a sound sleep to tell me about things that happened on your flight. I miss the way we curled up on the couch under a blanky to watch a movie or just talk. I miss the way you were always late for Christmas dinner because you were still making pies. I miss you, my friend and yet you are always with me. I imagine you having a blessed life with God and I am grateful for having known you. You will always be in my heart.
