Work on `Amazing Things'

Friends and family knew that Brady Kay Howell was excited to be a presidential management intern, but he was thrilled when he was assigned to a civilian post for the chief of naval intelligence this year.

Mr. Howell, 26, a native of Sugar City, Idaho, went home at night bragging about all the "amazing things" he had worked on, his wife of five years, Elizabeth, said. Then he would tease her, saying he couldn't tell her about any of it because it was classified.

"I don't think anyone enjoyed their work — there were 14 of us — as much as Brady," said Aaron Otto, a friend and fellow intern.

Mr. Howell, an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, "was the kind of guy who would go across town to pick up a Star Wars action figure, because he knew that someone in his family collected that sort of thing," Mr. Otto said.

While planning a trip home to Idaho recently, Mr. Howell joked with friends that upon his return he would provide his Beltway buddies with original Idaho potatoes.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 12, 2001.

Like a kid with a new toy, Brady Kay Howell, a 26-year-old Idaho native, had a dream job as a management intern for the chief of naval intelligence. Navy officials earlier this week identified the body of Howell, who was working at the Pentagon at the time of the attack.

"He loved every minute of his work there," said his wife, Liz. "He would come home at night and say, 'I got to work on the most amazing things today.' Then he would tease me by saying, `But I can't tell you about any of it. It's classified.'"

Before working for the Navy, Howell received a master's degree in public administration from Syracuse University. He was a political science major from Utah State University. And he was an active Mormon, having served as a missionary and later as a primary teacher.

Howell was passionate about enjoying life, said Tim Stewart, a family friend. "He loved to work with children. He liked movies like `Star Wars' and he had a Nintendo 64. He was a kid at heart."

I'll add to Matt's entry by saying I, too was impressed with Brady's character. I always knew that he was sincere, and cared for others. Most of my memories of him stem from his campaign for student body president. We had a great time working on silly slogans and funny tactics to get him into office. I also remember he would bring anyone that sniffled much in class a tissue and tell them to blow their nose. It really bugged him when people sniffled, but it was funny to watch him. I also saw "Holy Grail" for the first time at his house. It was hard to watch because he and his pals were quoting all the lines right before they happened.

On this day, my thoughts are with Brady, Liz, and family members; and I am truly honored to have known Brady and shared a brief time in his life.

Sugar Salem's class of 1993 is celebrating its 15 year reunion this month and my thoughts have returned to my good friend and student body president. I grew up along-side Brady and his absence since 9-11 has been difficult for me. Brady was the kind of person that not only touched the lives of others, he shaped them. I'm sure I represent the whole class when I say that we miss our president. We'll never forget you Bradford K. Livingston Howell III

Dear Howell family,
I know it has been 6 1/2 years but it seems like only yesterday. On Sept 10th I had delivered a stillborn baby and my parents were at my home. The next day as events unfolded and we learned about Brady, we tried in every way possible to contact you and did not succeed. You were in our prayers and thoughts. Memories of those three weeks we spent with your family was the topic of conversation for months and our sorrow and love for you and Brady. We hope that your memories will comfort you and also bring you joy as you remember him.

I didn't know Brady well...he was more a friend of a friend relation. I can say that he went out of his way to help me feel accepted. He probably treated everyone like that, but as corny as it sounds, he made me feel special...it felt like hanging out with the "cool kid". My heart goes out to his wife and family. He is certainly not forgotten.

Brady Howell was five years older than me, but I remember him very well. He was a good friend to my brother, Shayne, and my cousin, Kim Howard. I was still in Jr. High when he ran for student body president at Sugar-Salem High School, but I'll never forget his funny, energetic, and brilliant campaign. Brady was always kind to me and my family. He seemed to always have a smile on his face and a quick wit about himself. I am so grateful to have known him. My prayers continue to go out to his family and his courageous wife, Liz.

I went to Ricks College with Brady. In fact, Liz was my R.A. when I lived in the dorms there and that's kind of how I met Brady. He was such a funny guy and he always made me laugh. He was a great person to be around because he was such a happy guy. He had a great smile too. I know he is with our Heavenly Father now, smiling down upon us.

Although a generation older, I had worked with Brady in the Pentagon. I was impressed by his dedication, enthusiasm, focus, smarts, and wonder.
I was luckier than Brady on 9/11. I walked home from the Pentagon that day, and now walk home every 9/11 to remember Brady and so many other fine Americans lost.

I was doing a bit of searching on the internet today about Sept 11th and came across this website. It is so wonderful how many people were touched by the life that Brady lived. I know I was. He was such a wonderful person to have as a friend. Only good memories, happy memories, sometimes downright ridiculous memories are the ones that flood me when I think about Brady. I am proud to call him my friend as I know thousands of other people are as well.

As it is written in the Law of Moses, all this evil is come upon us: yet made we not our prayer before the LORD our God, that we might turn from our iniquities, and understand thy truth.
Therefore hath the LORD watched upon the evil, and brought it upon us: for the LORD our God is righteous in all his works which He doeth: for we obeyed not his voice.

We remember Elder Howell from the Spain Las Palmas Mission in the Canary Islands. He served the Lord well, teaching the people about the restoration of the gospel. We often visited the missionaries in their pisos and found Elder Howell's always to be in tip-top shape. We are so proud of his accomplishments since his mission and know he always did his best. We remember him every 9/11.

I knew Brady from working at Arctic Circle in Rexburg. I was a Freshman at Ricks College and Brady was a Junior in High School (or thereabouts). I remember Brady as a hardworker. If we really needed something in the front I knew I could count on Brady to always get it cooked for us!

He was a great example to many, especially all the other boys that worked at Arctic Circle. It became known to me fairly quickly that Brady came from a good family, and it's no wonder because Brady was such a good guy. I do not remember many others from those days of fast food but I remember Brady, he was just one of those hard workers and that is my most profound memory of Brady.

My heart goes out to Liz, his wife, I could not imagine how it would be to lose your best friend and sweetheart! My heart also goes out to Brady's parents and siblings.

I met Brady while working with him as an intern for BYU-Idaho (Formerly known as Ricks College). He was a few months longer in his marriage than I was in mine. We also shared another thing in common. English humor. We both love the movie "The Holy Grail" and during our working hours spend much of it quoting from the movies and tv show.

We also both loved Politics. I had always thought of going into Intellegence work but, as a foreign national I did not pursue that route. Brady was the better choice anyhow. Nevertheless, I have adopted Brady's homeland as my own and hopefuly soon I will be able to offically state that I am an American.

Like others on the fateful day, I lost a friend and I miss him.

Brady did you know they made another killer python movie? I haven't gotten the nerve to see it. I still hate snakes.

Thanks for being a friend.

I was just thinking about my little brother Brady tonight and visited this web-site. Although time has passed and the sting of that terrible day has subsided, I still miss Brady's laugh and quick wit. I miss our sarcastic sparring and I miss his concern. He was a great young man and I know that I will get to be with him again someday in God's presence.

I love you bud. I miss you.

P.S. Don't worry, the last Star Wars movie really wasn't all that good!

9/11/2003- My heart is full today of memories of Brady. I was so lucky to get to meet Brady and his sweet wife Liz and I am so happy for the friendship that we formed. He had such great wit and humor and had the most amazing smile, it could light up a room. We spent many times working together, talking about life and experiences from his mission and about his life being married to Liz. Liz, I can tell you that he mentioned to me several times how lucky he was to be married to you and how much he loved you. I visited the cemetary where Brady is buried last year on 9/11 and felt a quiet peace being there. Liz, I would love someday to be able to see you again and to have a visit. You are such a great person and Brady truly was blessed to have you in his life. I know you will be together again. Be strong and know that your Heavenly Father loves you and is watching over you. Love, Angie

I came to know Brady when he stayed with my sister and me in Bethesda while on an three-week internship for his Master's program. We later had the pleasure of meeting Liz, after they moved to Arlington. Know that my thoughts are with you, Liz, and with your family. Brady was a very special person!

After witnessing the horrors of 9/11 from the perspective of one serving in the military, and then finding out that one of my best friends had been killed in the Pentagon, I felt great sorrow when I found out that Brady had been killed in the Pentagon. Brady was one of the best friends that I have ever had, and going to school with him at Kirshaw Elementary and then again at Sugar-Salem High School gave me many great memories of an outstanding person. He was always there with a smile and a friendly comment and always looked for the silver lining in any situation. Brady, you are deeply missed.

I am thankful for the opportunity I had to associate with Brady and his family while growing up in Sugar City. May peace continue with Liz and Brady's family.

Brady and I worked together in the Pentagon during his internship. We worked as action officers in Navy Assessments Division (N81) and his cubicle then was right near mine. It was fun to answer his questions of my Navy experience from his civilian perspective, and he always had a pleasant smile and joyful spirit... it was contageous and he made our stay in that part of my Navy Career more enjoyable. His funeral service reinforced how much Brady loved life. I think of him often and feel he is at peace in a much more beautiful place. God Bless.

To the Howell family:

My name is Katy and I am a senior at Divine Savior Holy Angels High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Last week on September 11, 2002, we had a service to remember the tragic day that our country went through just a year ago. We each received a name of a person who has unfortunately died on that horrible day. I was blessed and honored to have received Brady. Of course I did not know him personally, but I feel like I do just from reading the information about him and messages from his friends. It seemed he was an awesome person that everyone loved and I'm very sorry for your loss! Along with receiving Brady's name, I received a white ribbon. My guess is we could do whatever with the ribbon...it would just be a memory of September 11th. Well, yes my ribbon does remind me of that day, but it's more than that; it will remind me of your loved one, Brady Kay Howell. I've worn the ribbon every day so far and I will continue to wear it until I lose it..but I don't think that will ever happen because wearing the ribbon on my wrist is the same as keeping Brady and every other victim of September 11th in my heart, and that's where they'll stay forever! May God bless you all!

I am a student at Santaluces High school and today, in order to honor the victims of Sep.11, we got name tags of a certain person and i happened to receive Brady's name. We wore the name tags all day and this was the case with most of the school. The point was to understand that these were real people...that every single individual meant something to someone...instead of putting people to numbers..for us they had a name. Then this website was given to us so we could come and learn who our person was. All the stories touch me but it was special to me to learn about Brady.

On the eve of the one year mark of 9/11, I am drawn back into the sorrow of the experience. I went to high school with Brady. He was my student body president. He set an example for all of us in our small town. I now teach students from all over the world. Knowing Brady and the type of person he was has enabled me to be a better teacher. As I have prepared to teach my classes tomorrow, I asked my students to study 9/11 and focus on the good that has come from it. Although it is difficult to see the positive from such a horrific event in American history, I have a light in the example of Brady Howell and his beautiful wife Liz. I pray that my students' eyes will be opened and that they will learn that we are all brothers and sisters and to look past race, color, culture and gender and see the light in each person. Brady has been a light in the horrible darkness surrounding 9/11.

May God be with you,

The company I work for has distributed to each of it's employee's the names of two victims of the 9/11 tragedy. I am honored to have received the name of Brady Kay Howell. I have read the short biography and the loving comments by many in this Guest Book. I will be keeping Brady and his family and friends in my thoughts and prayers on Spetember 11, this year and for many years to come. I don't think I will ever be capable of understanding the heart or mind of the individuals or groups that planned and implemented the grievous acts of September 11. I pray that the peace that God's Love can provide will help me to accept what happened and to go on, and to live my live fully. I pray that God's Love can bring that same peace to the friends and family of Brady.

I do not know Brady Kay Howell, although since the tragedy of 9/11 I think of him often, you see, he was the only Presidential Management Intern killed that day. My brother, also a PMI, had taken the same tests, oral boards, and gone through the the same interviews as Brady, as well during the same time. Steven, my brother, let us know that he was up for a few of the PMI jobs, one of those being at the Pentagon (the one he really wanted). Well, Brady Kay Howell ended up first in line for that Pentagon job, Steve was second and therefore took his second choice PMI at the Department of Transportation (he does enjoy the work he has and is doing at the DOT). About a week or two after 9/11, Steve and I were talking and he informed me of the chilling incident that came too close to home for our family and greatly touched another -- the Howell's. I was deeply saddened by the whole tragedy of 9/11 and can not fathom going through the grief of immediate family members that all these people had. I will never forget Brady Kay Howell, for he, in essence, saved my brother's life. God Bless you Brady (rip), Elizabeth and your family. I will NEVER forget!!! I will wear my legacy bracelet always in honor of Brady Kay Howell. Thank you

To the Howell Family,

I received a Mercy Band with Brady's name when I asked for one from the Pentagon. I work for the Department of the Army as a Civilian and had worked at the Pentagon on a project a few years ago. I retired last May with 27 yrs of service in Logistics. I am now working as a Logistic Consultant for the government designing a new modernized Logistics system for the Army. I tell you all of this because each day I wear my band bearing Brady's name to remind me why I continue to push myself to serve my country. I too have always enjoyed my civilian service and Brady and I will each day continue to do amazing things to insure our fighting men get the supplies they need to protect us. Even before I read his bio, I have many times wrapped my fingers around my band and asked Brady to help me with ideas. I talk to him as if he were at my side and my best friend. My heart is with you all in your loss, but please take comfort in the knowledge that Brady is still serving his country.

God Bless you.

Growing up in Sugar City made most of us from there feel somewhat invincible. Obviously that is far from the truth.

My heart hurts as I realize how small this world is and how great people can be taken from it.

May all of us remember only the good in all and be quick to forget faults in others.

The Howell family has always done things the correct way and I'm sure Brady was no exception.

Peace to his Wife and to Ken and his family.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
