Joseph Maggitti Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 21, 2001.
Tickets to Paradise Island
Joseph V. Maggitti met his future wife, Pam, in high school, and he took her to the senior prom. Tuesday would be their 25th wedding anniversary, and Mr. Maggitti had already bought the tickets for their return to Paradise Island, where they had honeymooned. "But Joe went to Paradise ahead of me," said Mrs. Maggitti. "My husband was a Christian; I am a Christian and so are my children. That is the great hope that we have and one day I will be there with him."

Mr. Maggitti, 47, who lived in Abingdon, Md., worked for Marsh & McLennan, and was in the trade center for a morning meeting on Sept. 11. When Mrs. Maggitti turned on the television that day, she said, all she could think of was something he told her after another meeting there: "I can see the planes flying beneath me."

Mr. Maggitti was born in Baltimore and was always a jock. He was a midfielder on the University of Baltimore soccer team that won the Division II N.C.A.A. championship in 1975. Lately, he had shifted his athletic passion to golf.

He cooked stuffed peppers for his daughter, Lauren, 14, on Sundays. He would go to the Fells Point area of Baltimore with his son, Christopher, 22, where they would drink local beer and eat oysters. "He was a best pal to me," Christopher Maggitti said.

I may not have known Joseph directly, but clearly he was a good spirit who brought happiness to those around him. The best way we can honor him is to be the best versions of ourselves, and live a life that he would be proud of.

15 years ago, on a beautiful, sunny Tuesday morning, so many lives were changes forever.

I worked with Joe at Metlife more than 30 years ago and can still remember his kindness and gentleness. He loved his family more than anything and always had a smile for everyone.

I pray for Mrs. Maggitti and her family always. Joe will forever be remembered by me and so many others who's lives he impacted.

Joe Maggitti----never, ever forgotten!

You may not remember me, but I taught Lauren piano lessons when she was very young and knew your family from New Covenant Presbyterian Church in Aberdeen, MD. My heart and my prayers have gone out for your precious family for all of these years since this terrible tragedy. I wish you all of God's peace, love and comfort from now until you run into your husband/father's arms again.

Saw this flower today at the memorial, and had to look Joseph up. Rest in peace.

Pam...
I worked as a UC with you on the night shift on 4NE at FSH. I remember how you always looked so happy when talking about Joe and Christopher. (At that time you were expecting Lauren.) My husband and I later had the pleasure of meeting Joe when he wrote a policy for us. When I heard he was lost in the WTC, my heart broke for you. As yet another anniversary nears, please know that he is not forgotten. May God bless you until you are someday reunited with your Joe.

Pam, I learned about losing Joey soon after the tragedy but not soon enough to pay my respects. It's a small world because I don't live that far from you these days. Just before that horrible day, I had gone to the dentist and the receptionist was married to Ray and although we didn't know each other, we knew many of the same people from Patterson. I was so happy to hear that you guys had married after high school and were still together. I adored both of you and was really devastated that he was taken from you. I'm sure that even after all these years, you still miss him. Thank God that you had all those wonderful years with him. I still think of you and I just know that someone as warm as you has many friends that hold you in their heart. Be happy and continue to keep those good people around you.

I was a good friend of Chris' in high school. I only recently became aware that his father was one of the victims of the 9/11 tragedy, because I don't get back to Bel Air very often. When I heard that he was, my first thoughts encapsulated what a friendly, engaging man he was. To be honest, I didn't get to know him nearly as well as his family or closest friends knew him; I knew him through Chris. However, even without spending much time with the man, it was always apparent what a happy, kind person he was. If I stopped by in the evening, he would urge me to stay for dinner, which would consist of a remarkably well-prepared Italian dish or bowl of shrimp Creole. He was as Baltimore as Baltimore can get, filled with justified pride for his hometown and Italian-American heritage. His son was, and I'm sure still is, a living reflection of his values and beliefs. Chris always spoke very highly of him at an age when the vast majority of kids were whining about and rebelling against their fathers. Now Joe sits beside Jesus in paradise along with the other victims of the World Trade Center tragedy. May God be with your entire family.

Best Wishes

Dave

Hi Pam,

I was just thinking about all the good times we had when we were young people working at BG&E and playing racquet ball every week. I remember Joe always talking about the Hoagie man and all the fun and laughs we had together. I am so sorry for your loss. Those days were the best. I think of you guys often and our mini-vacations. You are in my thoughts and prayers. God bless you and Joe. I love you guys.

To the family and friends of Joe Maggitti....I went to the service at Heritage Park in Dundalk last evening and the family that was next to me were wearing buttons with Joe's picture and I had to talk with them. I met Joe in the early '80's when I started my insurance career-we both worked for MetLife at the time. I remember Joe to be such a nice, sweet, kind, smart man who loved his family very much. He is certainly in heaven and my thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I met Joe in college. After we graduated he sold me a life insurance policy when he worked for Metlife. I saw that policy he sold me in my safe deposit box last week. Even though this is entered almost a year later, I wanted to tell you that I think of you and your family often. My daughter attends John Carroll with your daughter. I saw you in the office on the day that everyone was talking about the Bin Laden video. I wanted so much to say something to you just to let you know that I cared, but wasn't sure it was the right thing to do. I hope you find much peace in prayer; your family certainly is in my prayers and I think of you often.

Joe was one of my favorite people at Marsh. Whenever we met at company seminars and meetings, we would joke that the vowels on our last names mandated that we become involved in construction related insurance! Joe had a great sense of humor and an easy laugh. He is missed as much for his friendship as he is for his business sense. I will keep Joe and you, his family, in my prayers and I know we will see him again in Heaven!

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I consider myself very fortunate to have crossed paths with this individual as a former colleague and friend while employed with Marsh & McLennan in Baltimore, Maryland. He spoke very openly of his love and concern for his wife, his two children, and his family. You could not help by being touched by what spilled over from his feelings for family, and his genuine caring and concern for others around him. This is his legacy to us and we should all take heed to it. Thank you for being such a wonderful person to cross my path in life. God Bless you Joe and God Bless your family.
