William Pohlmann Obituary

Living Every Day as the Last
The night William H. Pohlmann met Linda Fata in a bar at Rockefeller Center in April 1973, he told her he just knew they would end up married. They did, seven months later. The children came quickly: Craig, now 27, Christopher, 26, and Darren, 23.

But Mr. Pohlmann, who was born in the Bronx, also sensed that he would die young. "He was devastated by his father's death when he was 15, and always thought he wasn't going to get much time with his own children," Mrs. Pohlmann said.

And so, Mr. Pohlmann lived every day as if it were his last. He coached his children in Little League baseball and in soccer. He helped them with homework. He worked hard, but played harder. He was funny and, his wife said, when he drank, even funnier. He liked to have big family dinners and backyard barbecues with neighbors and friends.

At 56, he was still a volunteer firefighter and a lieutenant colonel in the Army Reserve. Mr. Pohlmann, a lawyer, worked as an assistant deputy commissioner for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance in the trade center. But his real love was politics. He was a perennial Republican candidate in Ardsley, N.Y., where he lived for 28 years. He lost every time.

"It was very difficult for him to lose," Mrs. Pohlmann said. "But what can you do? He always kept going."

Dear Linda, Craig, Chris and Darren,

I want you all to know that I think of Bill often. But I also think of you and the pain, suffering and hurt you are feeling. Bill was a good man - I remember all the little league and soccer games in Ardsley and how much you, his family, meant to him.

I would love to see you on my next trip to New York. I would have liked to see you this summer, but Darren got married the same day Tim did.

With all my love and prayers,

Julie

Hello,

I went to my church on 9/11/2002 for a memorial service. The name of each victim was placed in a basket and the whole congregation chose names. I chose Mr. Pohlmann's name and have been praying for your family during this time. When I read about Mr. Pohlmann's statement that he felt he would die young, I was struck, because my father (whose name was also William) used to say the same thing--and he died when he was 51 of cancer. I will remember your family in my prayers--I know how it feels to lose a father at a young age and I know how precious every memory is. Cling to the memories. God bless you all! Sincerely,

Pam

I had the honor and pleasure to serve with Bill when I was a member of the 4th JAG in the Bronx. I'll laways remember his jovial attitude about things and his always pleasant attitude to all, including the enlisted. He was always a gentleman in every sense of the word.

I found out about his loss several days later through mutual friends, Vincent Mistretta and Mike Adamovich. Although I left New York in 1990, I will never be able to separate in my mind and heart the images of both Bill and the Towers at their best. Both will be sorely missed.

To the Pohlmann Family:

I will always remember LTC Pohlmann's generosity. During a 4th LSO annual training trip to Germany in March 2000, LTC Pohlmann organized a dinner for all 4th LSO members in the area. (Because we were assigned to different intallations, he wanted to ensure that we shared at least one meal together as a group.) So LTC Pohmlmann arranged for everyone to come together at Der Kartoffel, a restaurant in Ladensburg. We shared a great meal, and at the end of the dinner, LTC Pohlmann picked up the tab for about half a dozen or so soldiers.

This one incident is just a sample of LTC Pohlmann's renowned ability to establish and nurture a strong esprit du corps. His generosity of spirit and concern for his fellow soldiers serve as a role model for me as I continue my service in the Army Reserve. I will miss him. Godspeed, LTC Pohlmann.

We thank William for dedicating part of his life to firefighting and serving his country. Such jobs come with strong and beautiful hearts. We are very sorry for your loss of William. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

To the Pohlmann family -

My condolences to you on your great loss. I have known Bill since 1993 as a fine fellow officer and lawyer for the US Army Reserve JAG Corps. On numerous occasions he was my "legal advisor" for various JAG actions. His intelligence, sense of humor, ability and calm demeanor made our encounters a pleasure. I last saw Bill this past spring when the 4th JAGers on their annual training in Germany contacted me (a former 4th JAGer) to meet for dinner. As always, Bill's presence added to the occasion. I'll miss him. I know there are many others with fond memories of Bill. I wishing you the very best in this grief stricken time.

Gilda and the kids and I miss you very much. We always enjoyed your sense of humor and the support and caring that you showed towards us.

You were truly a wonderful person who touched many lives in a very positive way. I guess God needed some more laughter in heaven.
