Michael Uliano Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 23, 2001.
Pleasures of Shore and Stage
Michael A. Uliano, a broker for Cantor Fitzgerald, never changed much from the grinning 10- year-old boy who was profiled in 1969 by his Canton, Mass., paper for snagging a 20-pound bass off Cape Cod. That he had just recovered from a broken wrist only added to his reputation for athleticism.

For the next 32 years, relatives recall, Mr. Uliano returned often to the Cape to dig clams and test out fishing lures he fashioned from chenille and Krazy Glue. He rode the dunes in a 1973 Jeep whose grille he painted to look like a shark's mouth.

Work eventually brought Mr. Uliano to New York, and though he enjoyed being a broker for Cantor Fitzgerald, he really wanted to act. So much, said his sister, Martha King, that he even endured teasing as a student at Ithaca College when he took ballet lessons as a way to improve his football game and prepare for a possible theatrical career.

When he met Linda Buffa in Bay Ridge in 1993, she took note of his Boston accent. He ribbed her about her Noo Yawk habit of talking while chewing gum. They were married in 1996 in Las Vegas, with an Elvis impersonator giving away the bride.

Life had darker moments, too. In March, Ms. Buffa learned she had breast cancer. "Thank God, he was here for that," she said. Daily radiation treatments kept her from attending a ceremony in his honor in which the Canton high school retired the Number 10, which he wore as its quarterback.

Michael, you will always be a star in Canton, and your light continues to shine in our hearts. You touched so many lives in such a positive way. Your love of life, people, and the ease of your ability to entertain and inspire remains in my memory. You were always smiling and having fun. We grew up together. Your spirit still remains, your presence, felt. Your loss, huge. You will always be a legacy in this town. Thanks for being a great friend to my brother Jim. Still praying for you and your family and feeling the sadness. Your spirit lives on. Love Karen Cedrone

I met Mike in 1985 in Goeppingen, Germany when I arrived for duty at the 1st INF DIV FWD 4/16th INF, E Co. "War Eagles". I was a semi nervous Private and Mike was my first barracks mate. He was a Spec 4 and he made me very comfortable, making me laugh from the beginning. He'd often call himself the Big U, or stand in the mirror flexing, laughing. Huge personality, and a guy who do anything for you. It wasn't until just a few years ago that I learned of him being part of 9/11. Every year now I watch Fox news as they scroll all the names but Mike's in particular. And I pray. God bless you Mike.

On my mind heavy as I write this with tears in my eyes listening to my wife and daughter laugh and play in the background. How I wish you were here to be a part of it. I just wish you could see what I have become and I wish we could drive down s. Sunken meadow together as the sun came up with our favorite poppers to catch some blues. I really miss you mike. I'm far away were I want to be but deep inside I miss the sea and a body of water that surrounds the land made of compass grass and fine white sand it's not that big it's a fragile place footprints in the sand gone without a trace high winds and rough seas will make it erode but what does it matter the land is still sold a house will go up but that I don't mind because here on the cape good neighbors you'll find. September 12, 2011

Dear Gail and Family,
I was on the Cape Sunday and as I passed the entrance to Hemenway I remembered again how special Michael was to all whose lives he touched. You said he was intense and I would have to agree but I believe that intensity allowed him to experience everything with such a fierce joy that we will all remember him and grin. He didn't let a minute of his life go by without pouring passion into it. I know your pain must still be fierce but I pray for all of you that those wonderful memories fill you with even just a bit of his joy as well. His was a life well lived.

Maura Kilgallon-Mayo

September 12, 2011

Dear Michael,
As I sat on the beaches of Welfleet and Orleans this summer watching my twin girls catching whatever they could in their fishing nets, I recalled your letters about your summers on Cape Cod. Staying at your grandmothers and loving every minute, I could totally see why this place was so special to you.
I remember your wild sense of humor, your great laugh, and who could forget that contagious smile. You may be gone Michael, but certainly never forgotten. Yesterdays ceremony in Canton was a perfect example of that. You touched many hearts. God bless you my friend. See you on the other side.

Mike -

Today we remembered you in Canton with the dedication of a memorial to you at the Veterans Park. It was a beautiful day and all that were there were touched by all those who remembered not how you died, but rather how you lived.

I gave your family a flag which was flown in your honor over Bagram Air Field in Afghanistan. I was glad to be able to bring this flag to your family and I know they will cherish it always.

God Bless you Mike. We will see you again when we pass on to the next life.

I will never forget Michael, I started working downtown a month after 9/11. I dated a guy Steven who introduced me to Vinny and I met Andrew only one time, I felt like I had just met great people...never met people who loved their jobs so much. I knew Vinny and Andrew they introduced me to Mike down the Jersey shore. Michael would recite poetry and talk about his friends & family from MA. He was worldly he talked about dance, fishing, wrestling, that he loved to act... I always think about Michael, Vinny and Andrew...they were great people that I knew would always be special. When I spoke w Steven a year later, he told me that I had friends who perished in the WTC, I just want his family to know I pray for Michael , Vinny and Andrew everyday. To his family and friends, his wife Linda, whom I've never met, Linda, he used to talk about people he loved and he is looking down upon all of you. We will see him again. I WILL NEVER FORGET!

Michael was a classmate of mine at Cushing Academy, as well as a teammate in Track and Field. Michael, Jay Taylor, and myself set the school's team javelin record together. I am still waiting for Michael's javelin to come down. Wow, what an athlete! But as incredible an athlete as he was, Michael was even more gifted as a person. I thought about Michael today, as his laugh and hugs just seemed to be in the air. He touched so many people and to this day, 31 years since we graduated, I can still hear his voice shouting encouragement to his teammates. His spirit is as large today as his life was on this earth. God bless you, Michael.
