Neil Leavy Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2001.
Firefighting Heritage

Neil Leavy was very familiar with the World Trade Center. For a number of years in the 1990's he traded commodities, first oil, later gold, on the futures exchanges there.

But Neil Leavy, 34, had a firefighting heritage. His uncle was a firefighter. So was his godfather, who was a captain. Two of his cousins are currently on the job. "He always wanted to be a firefighter," his cousin Michael Leavy said. And so he became one, working at Engine Company 217 in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

When he was not on the job, Firefighter Leavy could often be found in the basement of his parents' house in Bayonne, N.J., pumping iron. When he was not there, he worked part time as a bartender at Memories, a Staten Island tavern. "He was a workout maniac," his brother Mark said. "He was a strong, strong guy."

Firefighter Leavy, who was single, had agreed to be best man at his brother's wedding next year. The ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 4, a year to the day after Neil Leavy was buried. There will be no best man. "I look at that day with mixed emotions," Mark Leavy said. "It's the day I start a new life, but the day he was laid to rest."

The Broken Chain

We little knew that day,
God was going to call your name.
In life we loved you dearly,
In death, we do the same.

It broke our hearts to lose you.
You did not go alone.
For part of us went with you,
The day God called you home.

You left us beautiful memories,
Your love is still our guide.
And although we cannot see you,
You are always at our side.

Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same,
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.

You have never been forgotten Neil.

Love always,

Diana Marie

Hello all,
I'm a student at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. As part of a September 11th memorial on campus, the organizers handed out cards with names and pictures of September 11th victims. I received a card with Neil's name and photo, and a quick search brought me here. To Neil's family, I am so sorry for your loss. Please know that Neil's legacy lives on in the hearts of so many.

My name is Tracy Clark and I live in Austin, Texas. For the last couple of years I have been a volunteer of the TSA (Transportation Security Administation) puppy walkers program. This program breeds and trains dogs to be bomb detectors in the nations airports. The puppies are named after the people who lost their lives as a result of the 9/11 attack. The first puppy that I raised was named "Leavy" in honor of Neil. She sucessfully made it through the program and now works for the Sacramento, CA sheriff's department in airport security as a bomb detector.

Dear Neil,

I think of you often and there are times when I struggle to think that you are gone. I know that you are in heaven looking down on your family and all of your friends. I am so lucky to have met you through your cousin and even luckier to have spent time with you. You were always so sweet, kind and loving. Maybe that is why God took you to heaven. I remember all your goofiness and laughter. But most of all I remember how badly you wanted to be a Firefighter. Well Neil, you did it!! I will never forget you or the nick name that you gave me "Lerch Toes." God bless you and all of your family. You are strongly missed.

Love,

Amy Diana

I met Neil a couple of years ago through a mutual friend. We started dating and I guess because of bad timing, the relationship didn't work. But to my surprise we became friends and I realized how lucky I had been to have known Neil.

I don't think I have ever met a more caring and giving person in my life. Neil was on of those people who carried no ill towards any fellow man. He rooted for the underdog. He never gave in when or up and always stuck up for what was right.

Now that a year has gone by I reflect on all the laughs Neil gave me. And believe me there were so many. And I picture his smile and it makes me laugh. Even at your funeral, you still gave us laughs and smiles. What a prankster you were. I still miss you. I miss the laughs and smiles. And I miss running into you at the beach while you were running and I was roller blading. I miss seeing you on Fridays at the bar. I miss my friend so much.

I can also understand how you turned out the way that you did. Your family is so welcoming and loving, even during the worst loss of their lives. I wish there were something that I could have done for them, it was heart breaking, to see how much they lost when you looked into their eyes.

I hope you watch over your family. I hope your brothers wedding next month is a joyous occassion and not a sad one. I wish him and his lovely bride all the happiness in the world. And I hope that your parents can find some peace in knowing what a wonderful person you had turned out to be and how loved you and your family are. I'm sorry that you are no longer here and I miss you very much, but I am also thankful that I was truly blessed to have known your kind soul. Whether you wanted the title or not, you are a hero, not just for your loved ones but for a nation and many parts of the world.

I miss you friend.

Love always,

Diana Marie.

We thank Neil and all his family members who dedicate their lives to help others as firefighters. Such dedication come with a brave, warm and caring heart filled with love for his fellow man. We are deeply sorry for your loss of Neil. May his courage, life and love continue living through all who love him. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

On September 11, you made the ultimate sacrifice, Neil. On that day, along with your 342 other brave comrades, you entered the gates of Heaven. I know that because that is where all heroes live after they leave this earth. God was the lucky one on that day, he received 343 heroes who wore turnout gear! God Bless you and I hope your family, friends, and comrades find comfort knowing that millions of people all over the world are praying and thinking about each and every person who perished on September 11. I am so sorry for your loss, Neil and family.
