Patrick Leo Leavy, a native of Clondra, Co. Longford, Ireland, and a 32-year resident of Middle Village, formerly of Woodside, Queens, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on Wednesday evening, November 19, 2025, at the age of 88.
Patrick was the beloved husband of Joan (née Kenny), who hails from Tralee, County Kerry. Together they recently celebrated their 64th wedding anniversary on November 11th. He was the loving father of Maureen (Richard) Diz, Kathleen (John) Franceschina, John (Jennifer) Leavy, Aileen (Eamonn) O'Rourke, Ann Marie (Sean) Bermingham, Margaret (Christian) Seifert, and James Leavy (Alice). He was the most cherished grandfather of Richard Diz; Kristen, Andrew (Bianca), Matthew, and Lauren Franceschina; Juliet and Patrick Leavy; Sean and Nicole O'Connor; Jack, Kyle, and Brady Bermingham; Alexa and Ava Seifert; and Colin and Leo Leavy.
Patrick is also survived by his sisters in Ireland, Rita Hoare and Mai (Oliver) Shanley; his beloved brother Vincent (Regina) Leavy; his sisters-in-law, Celine Leavy and Joan Kenny and his dedicated caretaker of three years, Lali Gaboshvili. His many nieces, nephews, and friends also mourn his loss. He was predeceased in death by his Parents, John and Elizabeth Leavy and his siblings Sean, Jimmy, and Eileen O'Hanlon.
Patrick emigrated to America in 1957, arriving with just $42 in his pocket and a thirst for the American dream. He began working the very next day as a cashier at King Kullen supermarket in Astoria, Queens. He later found employment with Pan Am, and during those early years in New York, he met the love of his life, Joan Kenny. They married on November 11, 1961, and made their home in Woodside, Queens, where they spent the next 32 years. There, they formed lifelong friendships and raised their seven children, instilling in them their Irish heritage and Catholic faith.
Patrick treasured his summers in East Durham, NY, and was an avid lover of Irish music. He worked for the New York City Board of Education for 35 years at Bryant High School in Astoria, as a Custodial Engineer, retiring in 2002. In retirement, he and Joan enjoyed many joyful days between their home in East Durham, visits from their children and grandchildren, peaceful walks around Juniper Valley Park, and the constant company of family and friends.
Patrick will be remembered for his willingness to help anyone in need, his extraordinary work ethic, his devotion to his family, his unwavering love for his wife Joan, his deep Irish roots, and the warmth he brought to all who knew him. And for those who knew him best, we will forever hear him say, "There's only a few of us left!"
