Dennis Devlin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2001.
Her Cheerleader
For 29 years, Dennis and Kathleen Devlin were man and wife, parents to four children. In a house on a small hill in upstate New York, they watched sunsets and laid plans to grow old together.

But Dennis Devlin, a battalion chief for the New York City Fire Department, is gone now, leaving Mrs. Devlin to try and hold on to their bond.

So, Chief. Devlin's hobbies have become her hobbies. Every morning, she's out on a three mile run, a habit she never cared for when her husband was alive, but one she hopes now will prepare her for a coming race that she is planning in his honor.

"I can hear him sometimes telling me not to get tired, pushing me," she said.

It is also because of her husband that no day passes without Mrs. Devlin thumbing through one of the 23 photo albums Chief Devlin labored over, for decades, meticulously labeling and dating each photograph. (The last photo he ever entered, taken three months before Sept. 11, was one of him in a helicopter flying over Lower Manhattan, staring at the World Trade Center.)

"We complained about him taking so many pictures, everywhere we went," she said. "But having those albums now is such a joy. We all look at them and think how blessed we are that he took the time and that we were a happy family."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on December 9, 2001.

To the Devlin family, please be assured of my prayers as you remember again the painful and tragic loss of Dennis. I visited the memorial and museum, saw his name there, and sensed again the terrible human cost beyond the numbers. Dennis was clearly a "Devlin" as shown in his courage and selflessness. Take pride in his example. May God Bless all of you.

Hello there.
My name is Steve Oberman and I am a school teacher in a small town in Ontario, Canada. In 2011, I visited the 9-11 memorial site in NYC and purchased a bracelet. The bracelet I purchased had Dennis's name on it. I wear this bracelet every year on 9-11 in memory of Dennis. I also continue each year to explain what happened on this day to my students. I wanted to contact you and share this information with you. I am sure
you must be very proud of him and the contributions he made for his country. It is an honor for me to wear this bracelet every year. My thoughts are with you.
Sincerely,
Steve Oberman

Over this past weekend, I did a memorial stair climb in New Hampshire. I climbed all 110 flights in honor of Dennis. Every time it got tough I looked at the name of him that I was wearing around my neck and continued in memory of this heroic chief. I am a 16 year old explorer in Gorham, New Hampshire. If anybody has more information on him please email @ [email protected]

My name is Brionica Bryson, and I am the Librarian at Trinity Law School in Santa Ana, California. Today, September 18th, 2013, I noticed a small American flag on my desk when I came back from lunch. On its staff was the name Dennis Lawrence Devlin. I found out that the flag was left over from a memorial that was held at a local college, where the names of all 2,977 individuals were displayed and honored on the staff of each flag. While I do not know who left the flag on my desk, I wanted to let you know that Dennis is not forgotten. He is more than just a name, a number, or a piece of history. I wanted to let you know that your family is (and continues to be) in my thoughts and prayers. Sincerely, Brionica Bryson

Dear Devlin Family,

I have been wanting to contact you all for a long time, and I think that today is a fitting day. I did the memorial stair climb in Dennis's name at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado today. I am a 12 year firefighter and am from the east coast, my family roots in the US trace back to Brooklyn. I've have met very few Devlin's before, and was wondering if there is a connection. I hope this finds you well, you are in my thoughts. Feel free to contact me at [email protected] if you wish.

I just so happened to see the name of Dennis Lawrence Devlin this morning scroll across the TV as I watched and heard the names being read today in memory of those who passed. I thought the name, to me, Devlin was so unique and reminded me of my earlier swimming days at Monroe Woodbury with two boys - Casey and Dennis. I thought, surely there is no connection. But having read through many of these tributes below, it appears that this is true. My thoughts and prayers to you all today and always.

Dear Kathy & Family. Ten years have passed since that very tragic day. I pray that you and your family are all Well and at Peace. I attended the ceremonies at Washingtonville yesterday, and met a lot of Dennis' friends from FDNY. They saw my FDNY hat, and the photo of Dennis, and asked me how did I know him. I told them the story of my job with Agway Propane, and delivering to the residence for 10 years.
I miss him very much. I wish that I had known him much longer. I Pray that he is Resting In Eternal Peace with All the innocent souls who had left us that fateful day. He was the only one that I knew. I WILL NEVER FORGET HIM. You are all in my thoughts and prayers, & May God Bless All Of You and continue to bring you Peace & Comfort.

Mr. D,

It's hard to fathom 8 years has passed since that dark day. We were so worried about you when the towers fell, but I thought to myself that you were a tough cookie and would be ok; you were just too busy to pick up a phone and call. Unfortunately you never got to make that call. We all miss you. We just need to remember good memories like light-up Xmas deer in a "peculiar position" on your front yard, being late to work because your duck had to cross Beattie Rd to go to the pond, your smile and so much more! A light will always shine bright on those memories. May God bless you. Until we meet again!!!!

September 12, 2002

Kathleen,

Just to let you know your husband was in my thoughts yesterday, on the anniversary of that terrible, terrible day one year ago.

My firm chose to memorialize the day by handing out "In Memory of. . ." cards to all the employees - along with a very nice enameled flag-ribbon pin. All the cards were different in that each had a name printed on it; the one given me was, "Dennis Lawrence Devlin, 51, Battalion Commander, New York Fire Department." I printed out Dennis's personal sketch from the New York Times archive and kept that with me all day. There were some positive similarities in our lives - running and photography, and my own father having been a fire chief - and I thought of those throughout the day.

Memorializing an individual made the day so much more meaningful to me and to have the name "Devlin," made it even more so.

Dennis signed my year book when we both graduated St. Helenas' HS 1968.

He penned "May sucess be your closest campanion". That is the kind of classmate I remember. I went on to work for the NYC Police Dept.and we had a lot of discussion about the careers we were heading into(FD vs PD). To this day I remember Dennis to be a gentlemen. While in HS Dennis gave me his support when my Dad died in my sophmore year in the line of duty in the NYFD. I will be attending the memorial service tonight(4/13/02) at our OLD School and am proud to have know him. God Bless!

We did not know your husband and father, but we did attend his service in Washingtonville. We didn't go inside, but instead stayed on the steps, and heard you all bravely pay tribute to a brave man, devoted father and husband, a funny man (oatmeal and prunes?), and a hero. A few weeks ago we ordered bracelets with his name inscribed on it which my husband, Paul, and I wear with great pride. There were many who paid the ultimate price on September 11, 2001, but Battalion Chief Dennis Devlin has become for us a symbol of heroism and sacrifice. He will never be forgotten.

I have not seen any of Devlin's in years, but I certainly remember the time we spent around the pool when we were growing up. Your Dad always seemed to be there offering support and encouragement when things didn't go our way and then plenty of congratulations when they did! Kerry, Casey, Dennis, Katie and Mrs. Devlin, I am very sorry for your loss. Your Dad was incredibly brave and self-less to go into that building to save others. You must be proud when you think of all the people he saved and comforted. My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dear Cathy & Children,

My son Luke is 22 years old and a firefighter in a small town north of Dallas. He stopped by the house tonight and gave Mercy BANDS to my wife Nancy, son Matt and me. I wear one bearing an inscription of Dennis' name.

I've read through many of the entrys and can tell He must have been a wonderful person. I'm glad that God gave him to you for a season.

I am 51 and the proud father of a firefighter. I know from experience that the God who created us - the God of the universe - is also the God of the empty places our loved ones leave behind. He is big enough to fill those spaces. Lean on Him .

Dear Kathy, Kerry, Cacey, Dennis, and Katie,

David, Trevor and I send our sincerest condolences at this sad time. We also celebrate a man who was a hero in the truest sense. His thoughts and actions on that fateful day were not for himself but for all those he went in to save.

Growing up with Dennis was always an adventure. From his switching out Peggy, Patty, and my Beatle cards for baseball cards, to his beating up on my beloved "I Love Lucy" rag doll. He was a brat! So full of fun and mischief! Though I moved to Texas so long ago, I have never felt far from family. I will miss him.

My love to you all now and always. I'm sure you are all saddened by this tragic loss but also very proud to have had such a wonderful man to call husband and father! I know I am proud to call him cousin.

Dear Kathy, Kerry, Casey, Dennis and Katie:

While wakes and funerals are not necessarily meant to be inspirational, the tribute you paid to your husband and Father was simply the most beautiful celebration of life we have ever attended. From the pictures, to the readings, the songs (what an amazing job by Katie) to the heartfelt and moving eulogies by Kathy and the other firefighters and friends...it was a fitting tribute to a true hero, a great firefighter and an all around good guy. As Father said, "Dennis was larger than Life". We will never forget the awesome time we shared on the cruise to Bermuda, from "Champagna" to Dennis and the Harlets singing "Sea Cruise". As the saying goes, We had the time of our lives. Kathy, your strength and courage, amazes and inspires us. As the time passes, we will not forget the joy that you and Dennis shared in life.

Dear Kate:

I am proud to call you my dearest friend. You are my HERO! I came to NY to give you comfort and instead comfort was what you gave to me. I watched as you put together the most incredible tribute to the man you loved and admired so deeply. He is looking down and feeling such pride at what an incredible woman you are and the incredible children you have raised together. You've done a hell of a job!

Even though I can't be with you personally to see you through the days to come, know that you are in my daily thoughts and just a phone call away or a flight away. I LOVE YOU, the most courageous woman I know.

Love,

Your Friend Forever

Jeanne

Dear Kathy & children: As I read the notes left to you by others, I too, want to express my sadness after learning that Dennis was called to the WTC that fateful day. Although it has been over 16 years since I've seen Dennis, his ever smiling face, comes to mind so clearly. We met in the early days of Engine 45 while I was married to a fellow firefighter. I was not, at all, surprised to learn that Dennis had come up through the ranks to become Battalion Chief. I want you to know that Dennis will always be remembered by me as a true hero. My thoughts & prayers are for you and your children - Joanne

My dear Kathy,

Julie O'Keefe's mother here. Our whole family is so saddened by the loss of your wonderful, courageous and truly heroic husband. It's heartbreaking. Julie described the visitation and that special Mass in great detail to me on the phone last night and how each one of you participated and how beautifully Katie sang for her Dad. I remember Katie well in a happier time when we were both visitors at John and Julie's in South Hadley several years ago. Indeed I remember you all at those marathon family gatherings. Now Katie's in college and I hope she will try her best to carry on. It's so hard for you all, Kathy. I hope all the love and support and prayers are helping. Jim and I and our whole family send our heartfelt condolences to you all.

With love,

Irene.

Kathy, Dennis, Kerry, Casey & Katie,

I am very sorry about Dennis (your Dad). I would just like to say, that the Service for Dennis on Saturday was the most beautiful service I have ever attended. It meant a lot to me to be there.

His grandma (Anne) and my grandma (Margaret) were sisters. As a young kid, I adored these 2 woman, and remember going into NY to visit with my Aunt Annie and Girlie. My Dad and Girlie were first cousins and very close. It is unfortunate that as families grow, causing younger generations to drift apart. It is my mis-fortune not to have known Dennis, and each of you, in our adult years. It is sad that it had to take something like what has happened,to remember loved ones and family.

From what I have read and the stories that were spoken, he truly was loved by all and a remarkable man. I am very PROUD to call Dennis my cousin.

God Bless all of you.

Love, Karen

I am sorry I did not know about the memorial service or the fund to which you wanted to donate to. I did collect $435 for the Bravest and finest Faily fund . You will receive a letter in the mail. Mimi Kim donated $10 from the pennies she had collected over the years. You still have my support. Monica

Dear Kathy, Kerry, Casey, Dennis and Katie,

Words can not express the deep sorrow and extreme loss we feel in our hearts now! Our first friend in Orange County and best friend!! The man with the biggest smile and heart; who always opened his home AND pool to us! Take comfort in knowing that Dennis touched so many lives and wore so many "hats". Lou, Cap, Chief....HERO!!!!! I know when Jillian is old enough to understand she will be so proud to tell the tale of how one of New York's Bravest taught her such things as "Hello Mouse and pull my finger"

Dennis thank you for bringing such joy into our home and love into our lives...continue to look down on your wonderful family and be the most awesome guardian angel there is!! Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you always.

Dear Kathy and children,

Although I was only in Dennis's company a handful of times while visiting my sister, Denise Donlon,Dennis was the type of person that left an indelible impression, which was one of being a genuinely caring, generous, and loving man with a great big smile, who was foremost a gentleman! To that list I now add;courageous, selfless and above all.....a HERO. During this extremely difficult time, take comfort knowing that he touched so many lives.

Dear Kathy, Kerry, Casey, Dennis and Katie,

My sister Julie O'Keefe told me of your family's grievous loss. It has been some years since our paths have crossed, but I immediately remembered Dennis- and most especially his great big Irishman's smile. We grieve with you, and we say: Thank you Dennis. Now we can tell our sons a true hero's tale.
