Frank Spinelli Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 26, 2001.
Family, First and Foremost
For much of the year, it was still dark when Frank J. Spinelli, 44, boarded the morning train at Short Hills, N.J., for the commute to Manhattan. A foreign exchange broker, he was usually at work by 6 a.m., tracking overseas markets, and his workday was often not over at 5 p.m. There were clients to wine and dine. He had been doing it for 20 years on Wall Street, though only the last seven months for Cantor Fitzgerald, on the 105th floor of 1 World Trade Center.

On weekends, he and his wife, Michelle, were on the sidelines cheering at the soccer, lacrosse, track and football games of their three children, Nicole, 17, Christopher, 14, and Danielle, 8.

"He was dedicated to his family, to the children," Mrs. Spinelli said. "That was his main focus. Many of the letters we received from his colleagues said the same thing — that his family was the most important thing in his life."

On Sept. 11, Mr. Spinelli called home and left a message. "He knew a plane had struck the building and said he was going to try to get out. The end of the message was, 'I love you and I'll see you later.' " There was no panic in his voice; he had been a volunteer emergency medical technician for five years.

His body was found two weeks later.

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on October 15, 2001.

Frank Spinelli, 44, brought zeal to life The nature of Frank Spinelli Jr.'s job in the foreign exchange brokerage field had always demanded he start his day before dawn and work into the night entertaining clients. His time off belonged to his wife, Michelle, and their three children, Nicole, Christopher and Danielle.

Despite all the demands on his time, Spinelli only reluctantly resigned from the Millburn-Short Hills Volunteer First Aid Squad two years ago, said Nancy Dahmer, a squad member and a close friend.

"He loved the squad, but he took a few personal leaves," allowing him to take a break from active duty but maintain his membership a little longer until he knew he should leave. "He and I had a few heart-to-hearts about it," Dahmer said. "He was a dad, and he had to be there for the soccer games."

Mr. Spinelli of Short Hills, an employee of Cantor Fitzgerald, died on Sept. 11th in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. He was 44.

"If we know Frank, he was probably helping people get out of the building," Dahmer said.

His oldest daughter, 17-year-old Nicole, wrote in memory of her father: "Frank J. Spinelli Jr. was a man loved by everyone . . . He was an extremely special man in the lives of his three children, not only being a father but a best friend. He taught the true fundamental values of life, which are how to love and how to be loved."

He was "an uplifting man, full of life, always cracking a joke with a warm smile on his face," his daughter wrote. "He truly cared for those around him, giving back to his community."

Born and raised in Staten Island, Mr. Spinelli graduated from Monsignor Farrell High School, and the State University of New York College at Farmingdale in 1976. He moved to Short Hills 19 years ago.

A foreign exchange broker for Cantor Fitzgerald for the last eight months, he held numerous competitive broker and management positions since 1977.

He brought the same zeal to his volunteer job at the squad, where he served as treasurer, house and building lieutenant, and maintenance lieutenant, Dahmer said.

"He entertained his clients almost every night and the one night he had free, he devoted to the squad," she said.

More than anything he achieved in his career, Mr. Spinelli valued most his family and friends. "His sense was always that people were the most important thing to him. He was a person about doing the right thing and being kind to people," said Shana Kaplow, his sister-in-law.

Other survivors include his parents, Frank J. Spinelli Sr. and Tina Falk Spinelli; his paternal grandmother, Margaret Spinelli; his maternal grandparents, Michael and Mary LaRay; his sister, Susan Aversa, and his brother, Steven.

Sept 11 -2001 It feels like yesterday, Frankie, a broker, peer, friend left us too soon. I can never forget that horrible day. Watching the screen, that morning, we can only think of our friend Frankie! We didn’t want it to be true but it was. Our hearts broke as we thought and prayed for his wife and children.
Frankie, a light that went out too soon.

Spinelli friends and family: my Husband and I visited the memorial Oct 2013. Both of us in college when wtc's fell. I in Texas, my Husband close by at the USMA. That very moment changed the course of our lives just like yours-instantly. My Husband went on to serve 2 tours in Iraq and was instrumental in many successful missions. I think, had the course of our Armed Forces not changed that very instant, my Husband would never have been stationed at Fort Hood-and consequently never have met me. My reason for telling you all of this? When we visited the memorial, I took a beatiful picture of Frank's memorial with a single white rose in it. I then glanced up and saw my Husband looking up to the sky and our infant in the stroller next to him, and so much of our life came full circle at THAT moment. This is why so many bullet points of our life converged. This is WHY my Husband went to WAR. This is WHY so many military families waited, prayerfully and diligently, for loved ones to come home, or not. I lost two friends, my Husband lost several classmates and Brothers and Sisters in Arms. Frank's picture humbles us daily that each day is a precious gift. My children will know of Frank, and how his name on that memorial on that drizzly, foggy day, healed us. Frank Spinelli, we didn't know you. But we THANK you and remember you and are grateful you once lived. Please contact me if interested in the photo I took. I never met Mr Spinelli...but ten years ago here in Phoenix AZ we did a Patriot ride for all who lost there lives. We had well over 2000 motorcycles participate. Each rider was given a braclet baring the name of someone who lost there life. I recieved 3. I was able to send one so far to the family. It not much looks like a hospital braclet but it meant a lot to me and an Honor to wear it as I rode that day. I do have Frank J Spinelli's braclet and Paul Curioli...I would love to get these to their families...if you know them please have them email me @[email protected]

Hi Uncle Frankie,
We think about you all the time but our hearts ache the most on this day. We love and miss you. Tears come anytime we bring up your name. Things have changed greatly in our family since you left us. We hope and pray that you are at peace and that you watch over us. We miss your jokes, your knowledge and your warmth. My heart goes out to everyone ever effected by the tragic events that took your life away. Grandpa does not go a day without talking about you or grandma. My mom heart hurts everyday thinking she cannot turn to her big brother for a laugh or a hug. You are missed always.

September 10, 2008

Dear Frank, Michelle and the Spinelli Family...

The Healy Family in King City Ontario Canada often think of Frank and his Family.

Frank was a dear friend and colleague....we worked well as a team when I traded for Bank of Montreal, First Interstate Los Angeles and CIBC in Toronto. We called each other Moe from the Three Stooges and told stories every morning about our kids and always had a good laugh.

Frank was the first one to call me in Los Angeles after a major earthquake to make sure we were ok....I never got the chance to return the favour on Sept.11/01

I know Frank and his family have lots of friends here in Canada from when he worked up here and he kept in touch with all of us....

Frank would buy us lunch sometimes on Fridays at CIBC in Toronto, he remembered the phone number for Pizza, Pizza 416-967-1111....he felt guilty that he couldn't come up to visit us more often.

Frank would always tell me his stories from his volunteering with the Emergency Crew....he was a good man and a good friend.....

When I left Trading to buy a Canadian Tire Franchise, he would always page friends and the other Bankers to the Paint or Sports Dept in my last 2 weeks at the Bank.....we all had some fun with it....I did respect his professional work and called him at home to tell him that I was leaving the FX world....he was a great Broker and friend who I trusted and admired....

Spinelli Family and Friends are always welcome at our Home anytime and I know Frank would like us all to keep in touch like he did.....

We will be sending our Prayers and Love to Frank, Michelle and all the Spinelli Family and Friends tomorrow....

Hugs and Kisses Big Frank/Moe

Hi Michelle,

It's Donna from the office, who knew when I got the job, I would find out that your husband died in 9-11, and four years after that attack, my brother was killed in Iraq on 11-19-2005 defending his country and the men and women who were killed that day. It's hard to imaged that we will never know what they would be like at an older age. They will always be 44 and 25 in our eyes.

My prayers are with you...

Michelle, Frank hired me as an Fx broker in Toronto back in 1981 to work for him at Tullett's. Frank was one of the best brokers ever in the business and he was my mentor. We continued to run into each other over the years working for different companies. I owe alot of my success in the business to the short time I worked under Frank. 911 and the loss of Frank played a roll in my decision to leave the business and semi-retire in Canmore. I think of Frank often and can still hear him refer to me as he did many others as "mo" I am honoured to have known Frank.

God bless you Frank.

Dear Mrs. Spinelli & family;

I just wanted to extend my condolences to you. I knew Frank from our days together at Bierbaum Martin. We worked together for almost 6 years. Frank was a special guy, always cheerful and full of energy. In an otherwise impersonal and often hectic environment he brought a humanness that made a difference.

It's hard to believe even now that something like this could have happened, and worse that it could take from this world people like Frank.

Anyway, perhaps on a bad day, one more positive note may help you if even a little bit.

God Bless....

Dear Michelle,

We only met a few times, but we were Glenwood School mothers and St. Rose of Lima parishoners together. My son Brian and your son Chris were in school together, and played Millburn Football together a few years ago.

I'm grateful to have this guest book to tell you what is in my heart.

It was my son Brian who first alerted me to your loss, and I have thought about you dozens of times in the past year. I'm so sorry for your loss, and I pray for you and your children to find comfort and peace in the happy memories of your time with your husband. Know that your St. Rose of Lima friends as well as all your other friends in Millburn love you and want only to see you happy.

God Bless you and your family.

Frank and I were on the St. Agnes High School track team together. I remember him by how he always encouraged me to run faster. He was always telling me that I could beat my previous running time. We were in many classes together and he always had a possitive look to everything. I was shocked at finding his name on the list. My prayers go out to his family. He will truly be missed by all the people who's lives he touched, myself included. God bless you Frank. . .

Michelle, Nicole, Christopher and Danielle,

As you know, I was the one who brought Frank into the F/X business. When he called to make an appointment for an interview we spoke on the phone for 45 minutes. His charm and personality won me over immediately and I hired him without even meeting him...right on the phone!! The rest of his days were just like that. His success comes from his ambition coupled with charm, wit, compassion and tenderness. All of these qualities were enhanced and validated by the wonderful family he was part of. Although it caused you all great pain perhaps there is some comfort in knowing that his Father in Heaven was very happy to have Frankie home again. We will always remember Frank and ask that you always be aware of the thousands of people he touched with his love and warmth. We are all better people for having known him.

May the peace of Jesus touch your family.

Frank was the very first person I ever spoke to in the Foreign Exchange Market, He played a big part in shaping my future career in FX. But the First and most important thing that frankie taught me the very first time i stepped in the dealing room, was "Mo, no matter how busy you get or how late it is always go home to your family." That has been with me for the last 16 years. He loved his family to no end and instilled in me this ideal that, no matter how big you get or how important people think you are, there is nothing bigger then your Family. Frankie even though over the last few years I spoke to you less, i will miss you forever. Mo our hearts are with you and your family, because I know, that there was nothing dearer to you, then your family

What could you say about one of the greatest guys there was. Always was laughing-never caught without a joke-quick to help out when you needed something and never asked for anything in return. All that will be dearly remembered but what will be deeply missed is having a brother as great as Frankie.

He watches us from above and I am sure he still gets a good laugh at our expense. A big hole has been left in our lives but there is a warm feeling in my heart knowing he will be right there to greet me when my time comes.

Peace.

Mrs. Spinelli,

Although I did not know your husband, I have heard good things about him from his uncle Gary F., who is married to my sister Leslie. I have 2 children about the same age as yours (8 & 15). We have been saying prayers for Frank, you and your children since we learned of Frank's death through Gary, and we will continue to do so. After reading the tributes to him , I have a better understanding of what a great husband, father and friend he must have been. I too, will "do a good deed" in his honor.

Frankie was my broker for 10 years while I was at Citibank, Banesto and Dresdner Bank, and during that time became a good friend. I used to tease him and call him "Shorty', even though I was only a half inch or inch taller than he was. He was always telling me stories about his kids - he was so proud of them.

One thing I will always remember about Frankie is that when I was between jobs (which would happen from time to time in the FX business) he was one of the very few to call me at home regularly to see how I was doing, or with tips on trading rooms needing someone like myself. Most of my other "friends" in the market treated me like a leper during those times.

I came to Frankie's funeral and was astonished at the turnout, until I thought back on all the different times he would tell me about the people and places in his life. He was involved in so many things and with so many people, that I should have been better prepared for the crowd. I was pleased to see he had touched so many others the way he had touched me.

God bless you, Frankie. God bless you Michelle, Nicole, Christopher and Danielle. You have all been in my prayers and will continue to be there.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn

I first met Frank in 1979 while I was working for Tulletts New York.

Then I moved to the west coast and again had the pleasure of dealing with him on a daily basis from 1987 1990 while on the $/DM desk.

After moving back to New York in 1990 he was at Bierbaum which was a block away from my office at Transforex so I got to see him on a regular basis.

My sincerest sympathy to his family.

God bless.

Dear Mrs. Spinelli, no words can express what has happened to you and your children. You already know most of what I, a hospital chaplain, could say. Your feelings are the important thing. I am here simply to listen. I am also a dance/movement therapist and will choreograph a piece in remembrance. Someday in time the good you and your family have shared will last; it may not seem so now. And in time you and your family shall be together in a place with all of those who have gone before you, where there is no more pain, no tears, no death, but only joy and fellowship forever. (Revelation 21:4) You all will be in my prayers for a long time to come.
