Jeffrey Bittner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 10, 2001.
A Brother's Paternal Streak
If you talk to Pamela Bittner about her big brother, Jeffrey, you would probably assume that he was born at least a few years before her, the way she describes him as protective, nurturing, wise. She uses those terms as a little sister would: "He was quite a protective big brother, always concerned about making sure I was happy and safe."

The truth of the matter is, however, that Jeffrey Bittner, 27, was born all of a whopping one minute before Pamela, his twin sister. But you would never know it. "That was the big running joke," she said. "He would always say, 'I'm a minute older!' You couldn't argue about it."

Mr. Bittner, who was a research analyst for Keefe, Bruyette & Woods, was a brotherly gentleman not only with his sister, but with everyone, she said. In the last few weeks before the attack, he had joined a mentoring program that made him a big brother to New York City schoolchildren.

My sister worked with Jeffrey’s girlfriend, and on 9/11 he is who my sister spoke about. Every year I send his name to her as a promise to never forget and visited the memorial by his name in 2016. I never met him but remember him every year.

During the reading of the names today, 9/11/2024, I heard the name Jeff Bittner, and while I didn't know this Jeff Bittner, I thought of my brother, Jeffrey M. Bittner (still alive). My name is Richard Bittner, and my heart felt condolences goes out to the Bittner family for your loss. I remember that day like it was yesterday, and will never forget those that gave the ultimate sacrifice to help save others. From all of us Bittner's in the Maryland area, we send our prayers.

Hello. I live in Broomfield Colorado and shortly after 9/11 our city flew flags in a small field for each life lost on 9/11. We purchased the flag that was flown to honor Jeffrey D Bittner and we fly it proudly. It is flying today, this memorial day, and I think of him and his family each time we place the flag in our garden. Remembering him , as well as many others today.
I wish I could post a picture here to show you. He is remembered.

I knew him thru my daughter. It has been 14 years but he is still remembered by those in Ct. Hope KO remembered.

Yesterday I went to the 9/11 Memorial for the first time. I walked up to the reflecting pool and looked down at the name engraved on the wall. It was Jeffrey Bittner, and as I have lived in Wethersfield all my life, I was totally astounded that his was the first name I saw. Prayers for your family.

On September 11th 2013 when I was down in Washington DC for the 2 million bikers to DC we were all handed the name of someone that was killed on that tragic day. The first name I was handed was Jeffrey D Bittner. I googled his name and these are some articles that I came Up with. Although I never knew this man I feel honored to have carried his name on the back of my helmet. I would love for any of his friends or relatives to know that he was not forgotten and his name was on the back of my helmet.

To Jeffrey D. Bittner’s loved ones,
I want you to know that I say a prayer quite often for Jeffery. I was given his name by a teacher in my 9th grade P.E. class who passed out names of those who were lost that day. I was only 14 and it was so hard to understand but I put an American flag next to my bed with the slip of paper with his name on it and said a prayer for him and his loved ones hoping they would find peace every night until I left for college 4 years later. I didn’t personally know Jeffery but I still have that flag on my window sill at my parent’s house and will forever remember what a tragedy it was that he was lost that day along with so many others. I hope you have found a sense of peace and know that we still remember.
You are forever in my heart,

Kathy Johnston

Although we are strangers to your family we want you to know that we think of Jeffery quite often. We purchased a flag that was flown in his honor at our local 9/11 memorial a few years ago in Broomfield Colorado. We fly our flag (his flag) and each time we do we say a special prayer for you. We are so sorry for your loss.

A day of reflection and remembering -- SO many fun memories of and with Bittner. I am so thankful for the blessing of having a friend like Jeff in my life for so many years and for the true friendship of Pammy both then and now. Love to Pam & Mike on this difficult day. xoxo Amanda

It doesn't matter how much time elapses, i continue to be dumbstruck by how helpless this anniversary renders me. I started the day by reading a book Jeff gave me back in college - such a simple act, but wanted to honor him in some way. My thoughts are with Jeff's family - and i can assure you, we all still ache for our loss.

I had a conference call this morning with KBW regarding an investment and half way through the call I could not concentrate, so I hung up. Jeff entered my thoughts and I was immediately transported back to Austraila with memories of Jeff’s wonderful disposition. He was a great person, friend and mentor. Eight years later, I still struggle to reconcile my sadness for the very good friends that were lost, but good memories of my good friends always helps. So, today, I will think of Jeff, with his big smile standing on a rock on Kangaroo Island.

Pam, Mike, & Marcella,

Living next door to you, not a day goes by we do not think of the terrible loss and the void Jeff has left in so many lives. We miss him very much, as we do your mother and father, and wish you much comfort from all the beautiful memories that you are left with.
With love and friendship,

Nature

As a fond mother, when the day is o'er,
Leads by the hand her little child to bed,
Half willing, half reluctant to be led,
And leave his broken playthings on the floor,
Still gazing at them through the open door,
Nor wholly reassured and comforted
By promises of others in their stead,
Which, though more splendid, may not please him more;
So Nature deals with us, and takes away
Our playthings one by one, and by the hand
Leads us to rest so gently, that we go
Scarce knowing if we wish to go or stay,
Being too full of sleep to understand
How far the unknown transcends the what we know.

Dear Bittner Family,
My heart and thoughts are with your family every Sept. 11. I grew up around the corner at 516 Highland St. in Wethersfield. I was devastated when Sept. 11 occurred and Jeff and so many other wonderful people were lost. My company (Morgan Stanley) at the time had their headquarters in the WTC and I worked at WTC in 1995.
Please know that neighbors and friends in Wethersfield will not forget you and continue to have you and your family in their thoughts and prayers.

I recently moved and while unpacking I found photographs of Michael D'Agostino and (I believe) Jeff. There are two photos, and I would like to return them to either Michael, who left them with me years ago, or Jeff's sister, who I met at Jeff's memorial. If either want these pictures please send a note to Margaret Peres - 215 east 96th - apt 9N - NY - Ny - 10028. I remember how much Jeff meant to all of you, though I only knew him for 30 seconds. Michael, I found these pictures tucked away in one of your books. I know you mourned Jeff deeply.

This message is sent to Michael, Pamela, and to the Bittner family. I would like to express my most heartfelt sympathy for the loss of Jeffrey 3 yrs ago today. I was a year behind Jeff at Middlebury, tried out for the lacrosse team with him and knew him well enough to say a quick hello and maybe a few words in passing. And even though I was not lucky enough to have spent a great deal of time with him, a few minutes was all it took to know that Jeff was a genuinely great guy. The loss of Jeff is a terrible loss for those who new him and for those who were cheated of the opportunity to have their lives enriched by him. On this the 2nd anniversary of the September 11th tragedy my thoughts go out to Jeff's family and friends. Jeff, you will be missed.

I had the privilege of getting to know Jeff when we studied together at Oxford University in the Fall of 1994. Even in those four short months, I became aware of what an amazing and caring person he was. I can only imagine the immense sense of loss Pamela and his family must have felt, and continue to feel, at the loss of such an incredible person. I hope that you take comfort in the fact that he touched many lives and all of those who were fortunate enough to know Jeff are thankful for that opportunity and are thinking of you and your entire family.

I never met Jeffrey Bittner, yet I do know him because he lives on through many, but most especially through my love, and his best friend, Michael D'Agostino. While I know that Michael may not ever be the same without him, I also know that Michael would not be who he is today had he never known Jeffrey. They were by each other's sides as the best of friends through their formative years. Without even knowing it, Michael keeps Jeffrey's memory and heart alive, for he holds Jeffrey in his own heart and every heart he touches, Jeffrey also touches. Because of this, although I never met Jeffrey personally, he has a place forever in my heart.

Dear Bittner Family,

I went to school at Corpus Christi. I was 2 years older than Pam and Jeff. I didnt know you well, But to learn that Jeff was one of the 9/11 victims, shattered me. To learn that someone whose life had crossed mine, was devastating. My prayers and thoughts will be with you always. Let us never forget.

IN 1994 I TOOK ON A LANDSCAPING JOB IN WETHERSFIELD,CT.THAT SUMMER I MET JEFF BITTNER ,HE WAS WORKING WITH US THROUGH THE SUMMER.JEFF AND I SEEMED TO GET ALONG PRETTY GOOD,HE TOOK HIS JOB VERY SERIOUSLY AND THRIVED ON EXCELLENCE IN HIS PERFORMANCE,WHICH I MODELED MYSELF AFTER.HE CONTINUED TO WORK WITH US FOR A COUPLE MORE SUMMERS AFTER THAT,AND WHEN JEFF AND MYSELF WORKED TOGETHER WE WOULD STRIVE TO OUT DO OUR COMPETITION.SOMETIME AFTER THAT I ASSUME HE MOVED ON TO NEW YORK TO WORK AT THE WORLD TRADE CENTER.WHEN I HEARD ABOUT THE WTC ATTACKS, IT DEEPLY AFFECTED ME,BUT IT WASN'T UNTIL A COUPLE DAYS LATER WHEN ANOTHER FORMER CO-WORKER OF JEFF AND MYSELF,ERIC LAVERY CALLED TO TELL ME THAT JEFF WAS WORKING AT THE WTC.THEN IT REALLY HIT HARD,I COULDN'T BELIEVE WHAT I WAS HEARING ,I HAD SO MANY DIFFERENT EMOTIOINS THAT I WAS EXPERIENCING ALL AT ONCE,DISBELIEF,SADDNESS,ANGER & DISSAPOINTMENT.I WAS DISSAPOINTED BECAUSE I WANTED TO DO SOMETHING TO HELP OUT VICTIMS OF THE ATTACKS,ESPECIALLY JEFF.I WANTED TO DROP EVERYTHING AND GO TO NEW YORK TO HELP SOMEHOW,BUT I FELT I COULDN'T JUST LEAVE EVERYTHING.ALTHOUGH I HAD MADE DONATIONS IT DIDN'T SEEM LIKE ENOUGH.I HAVE ALWAYS HAD A LOVE IN MY HEART FOR THIS COUNTRY,BUT MY HEART HURT,A LOT! A LOT FOR ALL THE VICTIMS OF THESE ATTACKS,BUT ESPECIALLY FOR JEFF.SO I MANAGED TO FIND A FLAG WHICH WERE HARD TO COME BY AT THE TIME AND WROTE JEFF BITTNER'S NAME ON IT AND HELD IT PROUDLY AT EVERY VIGIL THAT I ATTENDED.THIS SEEM TO GIVE ME A BIT OF COMFORT,ALTHOUGH I WOULD TRADE ANYTHING TO ERASE THIS TRAGEDY.I HAVE CONTINUED TO HOLD JEFF'S FLAG PROUDLY AT VIGILS THIS YEAR AND WILL CONTINUE TO DO SO FOR AS LONG AS THERE IS AIR IN MY LUNGS.JEFF'S FAMILY AND ALL THE FAMILIES AND VICTIMS ARE ALWAYS IN MY HEART AND MY PRAYERS.JEFF WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART,I MISS YOU,GOD BLESS YOU.

To the greatest friend I will ever have: From our days in high school to the last morning you left the apartment we shared on 70th Street, it is not enough to say that I am a better person for having known you...because I really don't know what kind of person I would be had I not. The goodness you imparted strives within me, and I will forever ask myself, when faced with tough decisions, "What would Jeffrey say?" And in the words of Chritopher Robin, to his best friend, Pooh...I'll never not remember you...not ever. I love you, Kid.

September 11, 2002

I am a friend of a good friend of Bittner's. While I only met Jeff a few times, I have heard so much about him in the 6 years since he left Middlebury, and I was always so happy to hear how well he was doing. My memories of him are that he was one of the nicest people I could have hoped to come across. Although I barely knew him, he treated me, and all those around him like instant friends. I truly hope that his family will take comfort in the many lives he has touched and brightened. He led his live with zeal and love, and to have accomplished that at only 27 is a feat that not many have accomplished. My thoughts and prayers are with Pam and his loved ones forever.

September 11, 2002

I would like to start off by saying that I am praying for the Bittner family and friends along with the other victims of the September 11 attacks. I never knew Mr. Jeffrey Bittner, but from what I have read i wish I had met him. Today in school we wore braclets, that had a name of those who were not as fortunate in the September 11 attacks. I chose Jeffrey Bittner. I wore that braclet today not only in school, but also to work and now I am home and I am still wearing it. I will keep this braclet as a remeberance of not only Jeffrey, but for all of those who were less fortunate. I still don't understand why all of these innocent lives were taken away, but I started writing poems and journals to express my feelings. I worte one specifically for Jeffrey, but I sealed it in an envolope that I will open in possibly 10-20years on the anniversary of September 11. I would like to take a moment of silence right now and pray
.............................
May you all find the strength and comfort in continuing on being survivors after all the pain you have been put through. May God Bless You & God Bless America!!! United We Stand!!!

Jeff was in the fifth grade at Corpus Christi when my son, Michael, started kindergarten. The bus is probably the toughest challenge for most kindergartners. Jeff befriended MJ on the school bus, at the risk of not appearing "cool" to his peers, and was a kind mentor to him for the next four years.

Jeff and Pam were terrific role models for the younger kids in our neigborhood. Michael has since graduated from Holy Cross and is a Jesuit in Boston. His prayers and ours will always be with you!

My mother and Jeffrey's mother, Carol, were close friends from childhood. When I was in high school I remember babysitting for Jeffrey and his twin sister Pamela when they were young. I was devastated to see Jeffrey's name among the list of victims, and yet it did not surprise me that September 11th found him with such a prestigious job in such a world-renown place. As a student in my class so many years ago he showed such promise and evidently had made good on it. Certainly he was intelligent and good-looking, but also compassionate, sincere, inquisitive, and fun. Words cannot express the anguish felt for our loss, so suddenly and so completely, of such a remarkable person. May God bless us all as surely He did Jeffrey on that day.

Last night, I read the Middlebury College magazine and was moved to tears by the account of this young man who graduated from Midd. 20 years after I did and whom I never had the privilege to meet. Jeff's girlfriend's sister wrote the moving account. Jeff reminds me of just two friends I've known who, like Jeff, were spectacularly decent, kind, generous and loving men. My heart cries for those who knew him best and will always hold him in their hearts. May time help you heal and take your sorrow away and leave you with the glowing memory of his love.

We thank Jeffrey for not only being a big brother to Pamela but also for dedicating his time in children's lives in the big brother program. Acts of kindness such as that speak volumes for Jeffrey's heart. We are very sorry for your loss of Jeffrey. May his kind heart, his life and love live on in those who love him. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
