I too lived in Douglasville GA, but I never had the pleasure of knowing Maynard. I found out about him 13 years ago on 9/11 and just want to extend my heartfelt sorrow to the family because like him, we are fellow Americans who love our country. I will always remember you. Rest in Peace brother.

Maynard was an awesome friend and colleague. I greatly miss our times out on project sites doing site safety walks. He was truly great explaining safety requirements to workers at the site and really helped me gain better insight into how it impacted my job as a Program Manager. I think of him often when Im out on project sites. Miss you my friend!!

Jif, today 12 years later...the family still thinks of you. I know that while I was at work today, I thought of you. I looked up at the sky and knew that you were looking down and keeping an eye on me. I still continue to think of you on a daily basis. You may be gone...but you are most certainly not forgotten by family and friends. We still continue to remember the good times we had with you. R.I.P. my dear cousin.

Bud,
Spending time today on your bench outside our office, now, 10 years later, the sky is the same unbelievable blue...your daughters are grown and Barbara soldiers on, you would be so very proud of them. On my construction sites, I wear your safety glasses that Barb gave me, I try to honor your dedication to our profession, but fall far short of your skill and professionalism, but I do remember your feelings about your sites......."That's MY crane......."

I agree with what Dawn said. Jif is always loved and missed by family and friends. Reality struck home for me last year when I heard his name read for the very first time as one of the victims of 9-11-2001. He is still loved and missed by everyone in the Spence, Evans, Haggerty, and Dickson families. I do know that we'll all be with him again someday.

Maynard taught me many things about our mutual business. He was easy going - most of the time - and had a sense of humour that spread throughout a room when he laughed. Here I sit in my office on Memorial Day weekend planning next weeks safety business and of all people that come to my mind is Maynard and my father both whom I lost in the late ninetys. Maynard was my mentor. He was always there for me back in the cable tv days at Jones Intercable in Tampa, Fl as well years later at Staff Leasing. Maynard was not just a smart caring individual, but a true friend to everyone he touched. As I continue to age I wonder what my life would have been if he were still around. I know one thing and that is I sure do miss being able to call on him for his wisdom and friendship. Take care friend.

I didn't know Jiff well, but we went to high school together in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He dated a friend of mine and I mostly knew him through mutual friends. But he was always a nice guy to be around and had a smile for everyone.

I was fortunate enough to meet and work with Maynard when he was assigned to Staff Leasing as a Liberty Mutual loss control rep and then later employed as a Safety Director for Staff Leasing.
Words cannot describe this man. He was truly genuine - something that is very rare in people now-a-days. Maynard knew how to live for the moment and enjoy life to it's fullest. His enthusiasm just sucked you in. Even if you were having a bad day - there was no way you couldn't smile when he walked into the room. I concur with others that his deep laugh will echo in my ears forever and his charming, pleasant smile will remain a thought of comfort in my mind. Maynard loved his family so very much. I know that he is watching over Barbara and his girls every day.
I recently visited New York and stayed in a hotel across the street from the WTC site. As I stood looking out of my window onto the site - I could hear Maynard's laugh and see him smiling as he tried to encourage others during those last moments.
God Bless you and watch over your loved ones until you meet again.

Well dear friend, a year has come and gone. On 9/11 this year Keller and I remembered the "Golf Pro." Anyone who knew you will laugh and I might add, wonder at how you got that nickname! Particularly those who have seen that slice. However, that's what we called you! We will miss your sense of humor, thats a given, but we will miss most who you are. Someone who didn't really know you once said to me, "That Spence really knows how to work a room." Well, I suppose you could if you needed to. There really wasn't much you couldn't do! But with you what you saw was what you got! You were one of the most genuine and loving people I have ever known. So, we will truly miss you. Set up the tee time! God bless!

For the past year, I have read every note, memorial, article, any speck of information I could find out about Maynard Spence. Being a Douglasville resident as he and his wife were, I wished that I could have known him..maybe I had seen him in the supermarket or passed him on the freeway - this man who lived only 5 miles from me, but we never met. Everything I have read about Maynard indicates that he was a true southern gentleman, a wonderful father and husband, and an excellent employee. The best part I've read is that Maynard was a Christian. When I reach those pearly gates I'll be looking for the neighbor I never met, and listening for his trademark laugh. God bless the beautiful memory of his life.

It's been nearly a year dear friend. For those of you reading this, he was "you ole sumbich" I was "you ole dumass." I had the pleasure of making Maynard's acquiantance back in '95, as he was the LC Rep assigned to the account for the company that I then worked. Just a couple of good old country boys, he and I shared many of the same life experiences. The dates of our marriages, and the births of our girls (both of us with two) were remarkably coincidental. What I remember more than anything, was our shared devotion to our brides. There was a time when he and I were to meet at a job in Florida, but because the lovely "Babs" fell out the garage door, possibly breaking her ankle, he called to beg-off for a short while. She, of course, was most embarassed for this mis-step, but, possibly unbeknownst to her, was the butt of a great many laughs thereafter. Maynard was the type of guy who never met anyone he didn't like. I am blessed in having had him as a friend and look forward to that day when we can again, share war stories and our love for our fellow man. I can assure you that he did not go quietly into that great night, but was most probably thinking of us all as he made that journey. Rest well, dear friend. Until we all meet again.
With Love and Admiration,
Tim

I remember as clear as day, all the visits Maynard and I went to while he worked with Staff Leasing. I still remember the two of us standing at the coffee machine while he told me about his upbringing in the South on a farm and all the really great fattening foods he grew up with. I always liked Maynard and he was always a straight shooter and funny. I recently went to visit an old client that he and I met with back in 1997 and that whole day--I felt his presence with me. May you be in GOD's enduring light and love.

I did not know Maynard Spence when he was with us here on earth. So I would like to help keep his memory alive for all who he left behind. Today I ordered a MERCY BAND with his name on it. When I am asked who is that, I will reply "The name of a good man who died young, before his time and also liked BBQ." I want my grandchildren to see me with this band on to remind them of the price some people had to pay on 9/11. My prayers are with his family and friends.

Maynard was a great friend. Maynard was one of several who trained me in the safety profession at Liberty Mutual. But, Maynard stood out because he was a true professional. I sought him out for his advice in many instances. He could get along with anyone. Using that sly grin with the right amount of humor and professionalism, he could seemingly always lead clients to the logical conclusion that they needed to improve their safety efforts. I admired and emulated those qualities. Even after my time working with Maynard at Liberty Mutual we had opportunity to work together again when the company I now worked for used Maynard's new company as a consultant. I again relied on his advice. He was someone I sought out to provide a professional reference for me when going for my Certified Safety Professional CSP designation. Maynard was already a CSP, indicating one of the highest levels of professional knowledge in safety; and I again sought out his advice in mid 2001 for my first test in this same process. I was not aware until recently that Maynard was in the WTC on that date. I had tried to contact Maynard afterward to let him know that his reference had helped allow me to be accepted for the test. I could not reach him. Maynard, I passed. Thank you. I'll miss your friendship and advice.

"UNTIL"
It's hard to find words
To know what to say,
To help the pain mend about that
Terrible day.
It came so suddenly not knowing why
But the angels from heaven
Came to spread there wings and fly.
To that glorious heaven
So many are now there,
Even too early,
No more pain they will share
Or ever endure, with the Lord
They are with, that is for sure.
It's not easy for anyone
To continue on with life,
but knowing we will meet again
At the gate to live eternally
In strife.
Memories always there,
Pictures and photos we can only
Now share...
Until we see you again...
At the Gates of Heaven...
We will be there...

I worked with Maynard at Liberty Mutual. I was just an underwriter back then, with very little experience in loss control. Maynard was one of those people who had no qualms about explaining and re-explaining. He had a wonderful sense of humor and back when he was sporting the goatee, he cut a rakish air.
I'm now a full-fledged loss control underwriter - thanks in part to the experience of working with Maynard...and married to Liberty Loss Control rep, Clint Roods.
Clint is at the WTC now - will be there all month - handling safety for the clean up project. I'm glad he's there - it's one small way to honor Maynard.
And Maynard - if you're looking down from Heaven - we miss ya! Go with God. Love, Leslie

As i sit here thinking about "Jif"
I still, to this day can not beleive that he is gone. Jif was one of my best friends from the 6th grade on up, and even to the day he passed. We would always play ball after school . He was not very good at first but if you know Jif he was going to give his all and then some. When I think back, everyone in our group was that way, We never wanted Jif to win, HE WOULD NEVER LET YOU LIVE IT DOWN, AND WITH THAT LAUGH AND TRASH TALKING HE COULD DO, BELEIVE ME, YOU WOULD always play to win with him..
Jif I will always remember you for the friend you were from the time we were just kids until the last time i saw you at a football game on Aug. 31th. you are one of a kind and yes I'm thankful that I had the chance to be one of your friends and hopefully I can be the man that you were love always Jerry, and i will miss your laugh and games.. This is one of the hardest note that I ever wrote in my life. i love and miss you Jif.............

Today I ran across the Memorial pages as I was reading CNN news articles at lunch. --First I had known of a list of 9/11 victims. I'd been deeply moved, saddened a few months ago to learn from a co-worker that Maynard had been in the WTC for a meeting on thatday and killed.
Maynard moved to Memphis, TN about 1982 or so as a new "loss prevention representative" for Liberty Mutual. Thouh not his boss, I guess I was something of a mentor, as he went through his first year of training in being a safety consultant. I certainly agree with hte aboev tributes by those who knew Maynard better than I: he was honest, alert, fun-loving without being silly. And I remember him as the ONLY person I veer knew who got his "basic training" at work done well ahead of schedule, cheerfully made more than his share of ciustomer visits, and was eager for more!
Maynard was a Christian. --That's the best part of all.
Truly, God is "in control" -- and we will see Mayanrd again!

Maynard was known to me as Jif... he is my nephew and when he was born "Jif Peanut Butter" had recently come out on the market and as a young teen, "Jif" sounded like a neat nickname! And (like peanut butter) the name stuck! Many of us remember him affectionately by "Jif" but WHAT I remember about him is how humble he remained. He achieved success in all aspects of his life, yet he kept his ego in tact. In actuality, Jif was like a little brother to me...and that's how I think of him...and that's how I love him.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,
the strength that gives you courage,
and the words to lighten your spirits.
And when we are left speechless
may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts
to ease your sorrow.
May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-
-the American people-
face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
