Robert Murach Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 20, 2001.
Robert Murach, 45, excelled at track On Sept. 9, Robert Murach barbecued with Michael Pallarino in the parking lot at the Meadowlands in East Rutherford before a Jets game, savoring a cigar.

"He loved to smoke a cigar before the game," said Pallarino, Mr. Murach's friend for more than 30 years. "It was a beautiful day, and I remember he looked at me and said, 'What a great day.' "

Mr. Murach worked hard but played with the same intensity, his friend said.

The 45-year-old senior vice president worked for Cantor Fitzgerald at One World Trade Center. He was in his North Tower office when a hijacked plane hit the building on Sept. 11.

Mr. Murach devoted much of his energy to his daughters, Madison Zoe, 9, and Hayley Noelle, 6.

"He was totally involved," said Laurie Murach, his wife of 11 years. "From the time they were babies. He changed diapers, took them to dance classes, fed them. He'd play his CDs on the weekends and stand in the middle of the room making up dances with them."

Mr. Murach, who grew up in Brooklyn and lived in Montclair, led an active life. He excelled in track in high school and at Columbia University, where he graduated with a degree in economics. He was passionate about golf and scuba diving.

He was close to his tight-knit family and relished his relationship with a group of six high school friends who were on the same track team that won the city championship. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of that victory in 1999, the guys took a rafting trip to the Green River in Utah.

"That win became a focal point for us over the years," said Pallarino. "He was much faster and stronger and agile than the rest of us. He was the star of the team."

Mr. Murach and his family spent time each summer in Sun Valley, Idaho -- where Laurie Murach is originally from -- golfing, mountain biking, hiking and swimming. They were there in late August.

Mr. Murach also is survived by his parents, Edward and Mary Ellen Murach of Bay Ridge, N.Y.; a brother, Richard Murach of Red Bank; a sister, Katharine Tynion of Hazlet, a grandmother, Ruth Servies of Crawfordsville, Ind.

A memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6, at Immaculate Conception Church, 30 North Fullerton Ave., Montclair.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Madison and Hayley Murach Education Fund, 41 Watchung Plaza No. 109, Montclair, N.J. 07042.

On Sept 11, I looked for your page on Legacy.com but could not find it. I received notifications though, that others had posted.....So, I am a bit late with this. But Time does not matter -- as we, who miss you & mourn your loss, so well know. Despite Time's passage, you are never forgotten and are loved by so many people - Your childhood friends, teachers, college buddies, and of course, your family. I am in touch with your Mom and it always makes me happy to hear from her. I also follow Hayley and Madison on Instagram and love seeing how much they look like you and how well they are doing. Keep us safe, Robert... till we meet again. Love, Ginny

17 years have come and gone, in the blink of an eye. But you are never forgotten, Bob. I recently looked up your daughters on Facebook and, my goodness, they are beautiful. You would be so proud of how they live their lives along with Laurie, your wife and their mom. I pray they continue to live joyous lives and please know you are there with them always. God Bless you Bob. You are sorely missed. Rest peacefully my friend.

I can't believe it's been 15 years since that fateful day. Your friends and track colleagues from Columbia will always remember you fondly and miss you.

Your smile and energy are sorely missed. Every time I hear a certain Who or Led Zeppelin song I think of sharing a room with you in Carmen Hall. My mind drifts to "Over the hills and far away" and I can picture you playing your guitar. When I hear "Reign o'er me" I think of our killer frisbie battles in the hall.

You were a good friend and track teammate.
God bless!

Bob,
Will I see you someday with a baton in hand ? I'm looking to run the anchor leg, however, we really don't know about that yet..

Bob, I sure wish we could banter at each other - as we did through elementary & at Xaverian. I'll never forget how we had to run "sideways", at a 45 degree angle, on that feeble track in back of the school; 3+ times around, on the outside lane, for a quarter mile...Ugh !

Take care, Bob. I will always remember you as a smiling fun person with a great sense of humor.

On behalf of the class of '72, we miss you and are thankful for the time you gave us in life.

Until later,

Artie

Has it really been 15 years? It feels, honestly, like yesterday. When this dreadful day comes upon us, year after year, I think of you, Bob. Even though I was just a young girl when i met you at Columbia, you left an amazing impression on me. I've never forgotten that laugh or how fast you were in track. God bless you and your family and all those who love and miss you every single day. You, my friend, are never forgotten.

As we come upon yet another 11th of September, our hearts will ache with remembering and loss.

When my Dad was not quite 20 years old, he wrote a poem honoring the Yankee team. The year was 1945, the War had just ended; it was a time of great joy.

After my Dad passed away in 2013, we found this poem amongst his belongings, written in his own hand. In 2014, I re-worked it slightly in honor of my Dad.

I was reading that poem again today. My thoughts turned to the great losses suffered by so many on September 11, 2001 - the day a new War started; the day of infinite sadness.

Bob, was my best friend in our teenage years. I always remember Bob. As we near September 11, my thoughts are strongly with him and his family.

In honor of all those we loved and lost 9/11/2001 my Dad's poem. I can see him smiling as I post this, along with all those fallen heroes, along with Bob smiling that million dollar smile!

We've been to the wars together
We took our foes as they came;
And always you were the leader,
And ever you played the game.

You'll always be our idol, my friend
Records are yours by sheaves;
Iron of fame we hail you,
Deck you with laurel leaves.

But higher than that we hold you,
We who have known you best,
Knowing the way you came through
Every human test.

Let this be a silent token
of our love's enduring gleam
And all that we've left unspoken,
We're missing you on our team.

I will never forget my trip to the Oracle office in Iselin on this fateful day. I first heard the new on my car radio. When I arrived at the office, we could see the towers smoldering from our office window and then witnessed the final collapse of each of them. A few days later, I learned that my college roommate and fellow co-captain of the Columbia track team, Bob Murach had passed away. You were a friend, a teammate and a very good man. We miss you, Bob!

I took a picture last year of the 911 memorial and Robert's name appeared in it. I felt compelled to look him up as the name in the granite actually belonged to a person. I an so sorry for the loss of Robert, he seemed to have been a wonderful husband and devoted father. I will forever think of him every year around the anniversary and say a prayer for his soul.

Yo Bob,
I think of you often through the 2001 picture of your 2 daughters . The photo is on my refrigerator door with all the other pictures of my family and friends... We all miss you ..On a lighter note, how's the weather up there ? Remember when Coach would make the team run the stairs and hallways at Xaverian on rainy days ? It was brutal. The only fun part was chasing and harassing you and the other sophs at the time. At least we made you run faster....Take care, my friend ! (Diane, my sister, says hello...)

Every time 9/11 comes around I cannot even bear watching the replays over and over again! I was only 4 years old when this happened, but now I have a much much greater understanding of it all! Both of my parents knew you, Sarah and Michael and this year is the first time I have heard of you! This summer we went to the memorial and I didn't even get to see you and it just kind of hit me touching your name and realizing that your name is facing New Jersey where you once lived, was just so moving and emotional for me I've never experienced anything like that in my life! In honor of you today, I made a little note tag to clip on to my backpack that said "9/11 in memory of Robert M. Murach." I am sure from the comments, you touched so many peoples lives and I hope you realize you will always be missed by your family and others that once new you! In gods name may you be at peace...

Bob, you are dearly missed.

There are no words to describe what we felt, placing our hands on your name inscribed on the tower one memorial wall. Bob you are forever missed. As I was sitting on my patio, reading Scripture and quietly paying tribute, the clock ticked to 8:46. I immediately saw Bob's face in front of me. Bob will be sorely missed by his friends who competed with him on Columbia College's Track Team (1974-1978). Bob was a gifted athelete, but an even better friend. We will miss him. A copy of a picture of Bob from his "track days" is attached.

I attended high school and college with Bob in the 70's. We were in the same Russian Honors classes in high school and I remember him to be incredibly sharp and disciplined. Unlike other teens at the time, Bob never spoke a mean or derogatory word about anyone. He was a superb athlete but Bob did not flaunt it off the field and conducted himself like a good soldier with his prowess. Those are some of the memories I have of Bob Murach.

I had the opportunity to meet Bobby, Laurie and their girls quite a few years ago. I'll always remember his smile - never ending. My heart aches for his family, and especially for his brother, Rich, Faith and their girls for the deep void in their lives. God bless!
