Judson Cavalier Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 22, 2001.
The Laid-Back Approach
A couple of days after pledging his fraternity, Sigma Beta, and moving into his room at the University of New Hampshire, Judson J. Cavalier bought a bed. More precisely, said his college roommate and fraternity brother, Nathan Sloan, it was a mattress, and Mr. Cavalier never bothered to get the box spring or the frame. "He was, like, what you would call laid back," Mr. Sloan mused.

So laid back that the university invited him to take a semester off to think about his commitment to academics. With a friend, Mr. Cavalier went to Vail, Colo., where he figured he could ski a lot, and took a job as a ski-boot salesman. "He made phenomenal money. Everybody knew he was a good worker," Mr. Sloan said. "He just didn't sweat the stuff he didn't have to sweat."

Mr. Cavalier, 26, did graduate, and was hired by Thomas F. O'Neill, his next-door neighbor growing up in Huntington, N.Y., and a founder of Sandler O'Neill & Partners. He was about to be promoted from bond research to salesman. "Being a bond salesman, you made a lot of money and you played golf with the guys," said another childhood friend, Ian Crystal. "That was perfect for Judd. He was there."

Such a young age to senselessly lose a young man. I pause today to think of Judson's friends and family and to let them know that we continue to remember them.

I met Judd my freshman year at UNH. We both lived in Williamson Hall. My roommate Michele and I, knowing he was from NY, would call him Juddson Hudson when we would see him in the dining hall and around campus and it would crack him up. I later lived across the street from him when he lived in the Sigma Beta fraternity house and I in the Kappa Delta sorority house. He was one of the happiest people I have ever had the pleasure to meet. His smile could light up a room and his energetic personality was contagious. I think about him every 9/11. My condolences to his family, the brotherhood of Sigma Beta fraternity, and the UNH community. Thinking about my fellow Wildcat with a heavy heart today. Rest In Peace, Judd.

Judd, just remembering all the fun we had as kids...

The days before cell phones yelling across the street as loud as we can "YOU WANT TO PLAY." Riding our bikes in the dirt trails then riding to the chocolate factory to get some candy. Swimming in my pool for hours until our eyes were red from the chlorine. Using everyone's backyard as our own playground. Wishing that when it snowed school would be cancelled so we wouldn't have to walk up that huge hill.

Too many memories to list but glad we had them...

Dear Cavalier family,
I am visiting NYC from Canada as a delegat to the UN's Commission on the status of Women. In my afternoon off I went to the 9/11 museum. As I walked around the pools, I found Judson's name. As I traced his name with my hand I knew I wanted to carry him with me as I wen through the museum. When I found his picture I could tell that he lived life to the fullest, his simile said it all. My prayers go out to you. He may not be with you on earth but he always live on in your hearts and the hearts of so many that he touch while he was here and even through his death. May God bless you. It is an honour to carry his name in my heart.

Hi! I am a freshman at St. Thomas Aquinas High School in south Florida and today, 9/12/2016, all students were given name tags that read a 9/11 victim's name and I was honored to wear your son's name: Judson Cavalier. The thought of him and his family remained in my heart all day and I send all my condolences. God bless.

Dear Cavalier Family,

This weekend I was touring the 9/11 museum during a visit to NYC during a conference. I had a small bit of time before my departure and headed down to where the World Trade Centers used to be to pay my respects. During this, I happened to come across the picture that was posted for Judd, displayed by 'The Last Column' and immediately noticed him as we shared the same birthday ... 7/19/75. A unique connection. Just a wonderful picture of a young man full of life. So heartbreaking. And so hard to believe that 15 years has just about gone by. My thoughts to your family - and Judd - as we will never forget.

I have just been to the memorial and rested my hands on the south tower water memorial. I looked down and saw my hands on your name. I had to find out who you were, and now I know. I shall never forget you Judson. I never knew you but I shall never forget you.

i remember babysitting for Judd when he was just a little child. My memory of a small little boy who was as cute as a button, but freckles driving his big wheel down the street and trying to keep up with him LOL

Dear Judd,
Just wanted you to know that there has been a picture of you, Joe and Ian on Davey's (Sid!) windowsill, next to his bed for 19 years. He knows you are gone but sometimes I see him staring at the picture at night with a peaceful look on his face. Your smile is imbedded in the hearts and minds of us all.

With love, Davey and all of the Cordes Family

To The Family,
I did not know Judson J. Cavalier, but the pain of 9/11 still hurts so much as the 11th anniversary fastly approaches. I hope that the Almighty has given you the needed comfort to cope with the loss of your loved one.

Sincerely,
Mr. Terry of NC

You don't know me but I have to share my storey. My best friend went to New York City and visited the memorial wall. She came across the name Judson and sent me a pic of the name on the wall as I was pregnant with a baby boy. This was already ironic as we had this name picked out already and didn't tell her so at that moment we knew it was meant to be. I just gave birth to my son on august 17th at the time of 9:11. This gave me goose bumps and I think its amazing. God bless

Jud, freshman year wouldn't have been the same without you man. I think back of all the great times we had while adjusting to our first year in college. All the great times with Fred, Lay, Scooter, TK, Stevie, Petey, Santos, Jeremy, Dorian, and everyone else on the 8th floor of Williamson. I know I speak for everyone when I say that you were one of the best people I've ever had the chance to know. The day I found out what happened my heart just sank. It brought this whole crazy thing to a personal level actually knowing someone who’s life was taken so tragically. My thoughts are with you and your family.

Seeing Judson's contagious smile in his picture made me smile. So he is still touching lives in a positive way. His huge, happy, and friendly smile must be a reflection of his heart. We are deeply sorry for you loss of Judson. May his smile, his life and love live on in those who love him. May the sorrow in your heart be lightened by the warm memories of times shared with Judson. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
