John Mellin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by St. John's Family Funeral Home & Crematory on Mar. 16, 2026.
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of John H. Mellin, who left us peacefully on March 13, 2026, at his second home in St. Augustine, Florida, at the age of 89. John resided in both Portsmouth, NH and St. Augustine and was happy to be at the beach during his final days. Born on January 24, 1937, in Nashua, New Hampshire, John lived a life filled with love, laughter, and a deep commitment to education and service.

After graduating from Nashua High School in 1954, John dedicated three years to the United States Army, serving his country with honor. Following his military service, he began a career in the trades, completing his studies at Coyne Electrical School in Boston and working as an electrician. His passion for service continued as he joined the Nashua Police Department, where he would often reminisce about favorite stories, including a memorable encounter with the legendary Johnny Cash that he fondly recounted with a twinkle in his eye. He had a penchant for the worst jokes imaginable.

John's journey in education commenced after furthering his studies at Saint Anselm College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1968, followed by a Master's degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1972. He spent many rewarding years teaching English, first at Manchester Memorial High School and then at Nashua High, where he retired in 1993. John's love for storytelling and his passion for literature inspired countless students and enriched their lives.

In 1984, John married the love of his life, Sue Mellin, declaring it the best decision he ever made. Together, they shared a profound bond and a love for adventure, sailing the Northeast coast on their beloved Catalina sailboats-affectionately named Obsession I, Obsession II, and finally Innisfree. Their journeys also led them to the British Virgin Islands, where they charted new seas and created cherished memories.

John was preceded in death by his parents: Paul & Louise (Merrill) Mellin, his sister, Marisue Grube and his sister in law, Marie Mellin. He is survived by his beloved wife of 40+ years, Sue Mellin; brother, Paul Mellin of Nashua NH; daughters, Kate Robbins and her husband Shawn of Nashua, NH, and Joscelin Mellin and her husband Dave of Merrimack, NH; stepson Sean Theodore and his wife Robin of Manchester, NH; grandchildren, Nick, Connor, Jake, Michael, Finn, Emmi, Shane; great grandchildren, Rylie, Nicky, Donovan; and God children, Mikhail and Darya Mayer of Newburyport, Ma.

A memorial service will be held at 10am on Thursday, March 26, 2026 at Trinity Episcopal Church in St. Augustine. The family will hold an informal celebration of life in Portsmouth, NH to commemorate John's remarkable life at a later date, details of which will be announced later. Friends and family are invited to join in honoring the legacy of a man who touched so many lives with his kindness and humor.

If you wish to honor John's memory with a donation, his favorite charities were K9s for Warriors (K9sForWarriors.org) and German Shepherd Rescue of New England (gsrne.org).

John will be remembered not only for his achievements and amazing story telling but also for the love and joy he brought into the world. May he sail peacefully into the next chapter of his journey.

I was a student in John's American Literature class at NHS many years ago. From the first day to the last, he referred to me as Dan Cody, after the character in the GREAT GATSBY. This was funny for maybe the first week, but I got an excellent grade, so I didn't care. Condolences to the family for the loss of a unique individual. I have always appreciated the contrast between Mrs. Marie Mellin (RIP) who was my American History teacher, and John.

My condolences to Mrs. Mellin and family. Mr. Mellin was one of my favorite teachers at Nashua High School. He touched so many lives.
He will not be forgotten.
