Carl Bedigian Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 3, 2001.
Living With an Angel
Sometimes, Carl J. Bedigian did not seem real to the woman who had been his wife for less than a year. A firefighter with Engine 214 in Brooklyn, he once donated his bone marrow to a 4-year-old boy in Europe he had never met, Michele Bedigian said.

He had a "magical" smile, and "a beautiful way of making people comfortable around him," she said. "Sometimes I think he's an angel. Sometimes I think he wasn't really a person."

In 1998, Mr. Bedigian fell ill with a rare condition that paralyzed him, but he defied the odds and walked again within weeks out of the sheer power of his will, Mrs. Bedigian said. The experience made the couple live every day as if it were their last. They traveled, they planned a family. And Mr. Bedigian, 35, stayed committed to the Fire Department and had "a constant ambition to do more to help people," she said.

Mr. Bedigian was buried Nov. 5. "That was Carl's calling," his 31-year-old widow said of his life as a fireman. "As painful as it is, I'm incredibly proud of him."

I remember Carl, especially growing up around him, and his brother Joe; seems like yesterday we were throwing a football around the streets of Brooklyn, along with Brian and Lewis. He was always a great 'kid' and really made something of himself. Yes, I wish he was still around, as there would be no telling of what great deeds he would be still doing to this day. He did die heroically, and each year at my school, Atlanta International, I share his photo and story with faculty, staff and students, as we lower the flag to half staff. To this day he is still inspiring others.

I took a trip over to the US a couple of years ago and photographed the shrine. Carl's name was on the photo and I just looked him up. What a remarkable hero, hope the family are moving on knowing the great sacrifice he made and to Carl rest in peace.

To Dolores, Joe, and Robert: Every year I watch the memorial on TV, unfortunately I have Jury Duty and will miss it today. When they call Carls name and flash his picture, I see that beautiful smile and it brings me back to that horrific day. I will always love and miss Carl, there was no one like him. His smile haunts me. I know you will be with supportive people today and that's the important thing. I will always love him and all of you for what you are, strong and loving mother and brothers. May God Bless you all and Carl in Heaven.

Everything about Carl was remarkable and the thought of how many lives he touched that he never even knew is something he would have smiled a humble smile about. We miss you Carl and the memories are just as strong as they have remained over the years. The laughs were many and your thought of often...Forever in our hearts, Leslie and the lil man you never got the chance to meet.

I do not know Lt. Bedigian. I have read that he was an extraordinary man, and he is missed by many. Yesterday, I climbed 112 flights of stairs in his memory at a 9/11 memorial stair climb in Nashville. I thought of Lt. Bedigian often as I climbed; his photo was around my neck. It was my honor and I will never forget his name as long as I live.

January 10, 2012

To The Family,
A man who would donate his bone marrow to someone he didn't know no doubt is a remarkable person. Secondly, he risked his life, trying to save others in being a Fireman. Well, I never had the privilege of knowing Mr. Bedigian, but in reading the obituary any person could see that he was simply a " good person." I am so sorry to learn of your loss. Please accept my deepest expression of sympathy.

Sincerely,
Mr. Terry of NC

Carl and I were in kessler rehabilitation together in 1998 after he was stricken with a rare disease. He overcame it and went back to what he loved. He helped me overcome my injury's and encouraged me by just being there. We talked about Jesus, wheeled ourselves outside to watch the wild turkeys and became friends. I will never forget you Carl and your kind and beautiful spirit, I know we will meet again and in the mean time keep watch.

Dear Mr. Bedigian:

I believe a hero is someone who puts the needs of others before their own. I want to thank you for being a hero on September 11, 2001. You put the needs of the victims ahead of yourself by helping victims of the Twin Tower attack get to safety. You helped save innocent people during their time of need. Because of your actions, you are a true hero.

Your wife Michele misses you so much and I would’ve loved to meet you. I read that you seemed to light up a room and would always make people feel comfortable around you. I wonder what it was like working on Engine 214. Everyone who loved you knew you loved your job.

We will always remember your service to our country. Though you had no way of knowing what would happen that day, you will never be forgotten. Every patriot day we will remember you and the other heroes September 11.

Again, thank you for your service.

Sincerely,

Dear Mr. Carl J. Bedigian,
In the dictionary it says a hero is a legendary figure of great strength and ability. A man admired for his achievements and qualities. I think a hero is someone who can make a difference, and on September 11 you did. So I want to thank you for being a hero. You put your life on the line for our country.
Not only do I thank you so does everyone else. I know your wife Michele and family miss you but they look up to you. They think you are the bravest person they know. And today they are praying for and thinking about you. Not only were you a hero on September 11 you were also a hero when you put your life at risk and gave your bone marrow to a kid you did not know.
We will always remember you. You did not know what was going to happen the day at the world trade center but you saved lives anyways. You did what nobody else could and we all thank you.
Thank you for your service.

Sincerely,

Dear Carl:
I still cannot believe that you are gone. I remember Carl from going through St. Cecilia's in Greenpoint, Brooklyn 1st - 8th grades with him. He was one of the quiet boys. He was just so nice. I feel for your family. I know that you would not believe it but my father is gone 2 years. If my mother had it in Greenpoint, I know if you were still here with us that you would have been there for my father. We lost one of the good guys in this world, Carl and that was you. You never had a mean bone in your body. Your probably laughing with my father now. Rest in peace,

I grew up with Carl. In fact, I sat behind him in St. Cecilia's school for eight years.... I hung out with him and his best friend growing up (Sal). Carl and I had some things in common. We both lost our father's at a young age. We both had many brothers. As we grew older and went to different schools, we obviously didn't see much of each other. Every once in awhile he would drive past my house on the way home. He always pulled over, got out of the car and gave me a big hello and a smile as if he was thrilled to see me. He had a certain quality about him... He really did care and really was happy to see an old friend... I think of him and his family often. He was a true hero and there is no doubt where he sits today.... God Bless Carl, his wife and his family.

September 8, 2008

Dear Carl,

This September 11, 2008 will be the 7th Anniversary of when you were taken away from our world. However, they took you from us, but we still have all of the memories which cannot be taken away or erase from our hearts.

Jayden's memories of you grow stronger and stronger; he is the first at a family get together to say grace and he will always start off by mentioning his Tio Carl. You must be proud of him as you watch and protect your godchild/nephew from the heavens above.

The day before my birthday we saw a double rainbow, and sure enough he said, one rainbow is little grandma and the other is Tio Carl, as we watched the rainbow grow brighter, he said "they are saying Happy Birthday to you Grandma". I do believe that you and mom spoke to me that day. Oh how happy this made me.

Jayden now has a baby brother who will some day also know about his Tio Carl.

God bless you,

Evelyn and Richard

Dear Carl,

Another year starts and we hold on tight to your memories.

Your godson and nephew is doing well, he seems to remember you as if it was just yesterday you left us (he was only three months when you last held him). When ever the family gets together he will always include his special blessing for Tio Carl. We know that you are watching over him as one of his special Angels.

Kisses and hugs for Little grandma for I know she is with you in Heaven.

God bless

As I stitched your name on the memorial that I am doing for all of the victims, I prayed for you and your family. Please know that your death was not in vane. We will always remember.

September 12, 2006

Dear Carl,

I write to you on the 12th of September, because I just could not find my way to my computer to share some thoughts with you on the 11th.

We have carried an opened wound in our hearts for the past 5 years, but somehow, this 5th anniversay seem as if that auful day you were taken from us had just happened.

A day does not go by that we do not speak or think of you. You are always in our hearts, thoughts and prayers.

I believe that you are in a beautiful place, filled with bright colors and no fear, a place with green mountains and warm summer days (days that we often spoke about). I pray that I will be able to share that special place with you someday.

This weekend we joined Michele for a special ceremony to honor the memory of the 343 Firefighters who joined the "Heaven's FDNY" led by Father Judge.

On 9-11 we joined Michele at your home away from home "The Nuthouse" for a prayer service held in memory of the men from 214/111 who left us that day when trying to save others.

We visited your resting place, to spend some private moments with you. Michele held Jayden as he kneeled before you with his hand held in prayer. Did you notice how when we left instead of knelling on two knees,he kneeled only on one knee and said his departing prayer? I asked him why he only used one knee to say his goodby prayers,he said that God had showen him that you start your prayers with two knees then you end with one knee. You would be so proud of your Godson/nephew. Someday he will share the stories your wife and her family have shared with him about his Tio Carl and the wonderful memories you have left us with.

I hope see you in my dreams for now.

Until we met again,

God Bless you, rest in peace

I remember summer bbq's at our house in Bohemia, I would get so excited when mom would say you and Lynn were coming. You were always my favorite probably because you picked on me so much! I spent the night of 9/11 calling your cell phone in hopes you would pick up the phone, but you didnt and five years later I still hope.

We miss you very much and we love you very much. I know your looking down on all of us and you don't want us to be sad, but we are. Today Im thinking of you, not with sadness or anger but with happiness and joy because that's how I remember you, always smiling and always happy.

Save some hotdogs & hamburgers for me up there, I will see you someday.

My wife and I were lucky enough to have met Carl when we were vacationing in Aruba in June of 1999.He was esctatic to be there and proceeded to tell me he was planning to propose to his fiance,Michele. The only catch was, he planned it without her knowing and she was only given a DVD recording to fly down and meet him in Aruba with instructions on where to meet. Need less to say, the plan worked to perfection and they were engaged. I enjoyed the time I had with him that week, discussing family, business and just laughs. God Bless you Carl, Your spirit will forever live in my families hearts.

Dear Carl, it's so difficult to believe that five years have passed. I still remember the shock and disbelief I felt when Johnny called, to let me know that you'd responded to the call and were missing at Ground Zero. I remember that strange mixture of sadness and relief, of thanksgiving and grief, when he called again to tell me you were found. And seeing your mother and brothers at the funeral home. But like so many others, I also remember your smile, the way you were always so willing to help your neighbors. You installed my ceiling fan! And all those times you helped me carry heavy packages upstairs... You will always be loved, and missed. With love and enduring gratitude for all you've done, from your former neighbor on Engert Avenue.

Dearest Carl: My husband cried for you last night. He never met you but I speak of you so often that he feels he knew you. Gina asked me all sorts of questions like "Why did GOD take Carl away?" Wow - what could I say to that. I told her that GOD loved you so much that he wanted you to be with him so that he can see your wonderful smile and smile back too. She didn't believe me but she shrugged and we silently wept together. We were watching a documentary on Firemen last night and at the end there were pictures of all those who perished on that awful day. I scanned the T.V. while the pictures appeared and then there it was "your picture" and I could not contain the loss of you. I cried and cried and so my husband too cried for you. I told him you were a wonderful man, a gentle person, a true soul who always wore a smile on his face and that you were always happy. Carl, I know that it might seem that I'm rambling on here but I am at a loss for words. Today is such a sad day because it serves as a reminder that you were taken from those you loved and those who loved you back. All I can say Carl is that "YOU WILL NEVER EVER BE FORGOTTEN" When someone was as good a person as you and such a caring person, so much so as to become a Fireman knowing that your life is in danger on a daily basis, NO ONE WILL EVER FORGET. YOU WERE ONE OF A KIND CARL. I MISS YOU AND SO DOES GINA AND SHE THINKS OF YOU ALOT. GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS AND FOREVER CARL AND I KNOW THAT YOU LOOK DOWN UPON THIS EARTH WITH SADNESS BECAUSE YOU ARE IN SUCH A BETTER PLACE ---WITH GOD. Please say hello to Papi for me if you would and Abuelo. Tell them I miss them and always remember that we miss you very much.

Love Linda, Gina and Family

I know you are with us all during this tough day and I just wanted to take a moment to let you know I miss you and that you still inspire me each day when I see your smiling face. Words can't really say it all but just know that you are loved and greatly missed. Give Dad a hug up there for me. Until we meet again my friend.

Dear Carl,

Well you godson started school yesterday, how sweet was that.

Michele, Rich and I (and I am sure you were also there with us),met Jayen and his wonderful parents at the entrace of the school. We took lots of pictures (of course)and sent him off for his first day.

We went over to hear all his stories last night, and boy did he have alot to tell, about his teacher, new friend, the Shea Stadium sign in the gym and his locker (to be used for his towel).

That was only the first day, lets see what happens by the end of the week.

Will love you forever,

When I joined the blogger tribute to the victims of 9/11 (The 2996), I wasn't sure what to expect. How could I possibly write a tribute for someone I never met, never would get to meet.

When I found this memorial and began reading the messages left here, I realized that he was no longer a stranger to me. He became a real person, a real hero to me.

I am still hoping to find more information about this amazing man before the fifth anniversary tribute is posted. If you would like to share any stories about Carl with me, I would be very grateful.
