Thomas Casoria Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 5, 2001.
On the Verge of Marriage
Thomas A. Casoria waited almost five years, after taking his exam, to be called to his job at the Fire Department. After almost three years on the job he was with Engine 22 on East 85th Street.

Firefighter Casoria was last heard from, according to his father, Carlo, when he radioed his captain to say that he and two other firefighters were helping a paraplegic down the stairs from the fifth floor of 1 World Trade Center and, a little later, when he radioed that a fireman was down.

Firefighter Casoria, 29, grew up in Whitestone, Queens. At Holy Cross High School in Flushing, Queens, he played second base and was captain of his baseball team and was an all-city football player. Once in the Fire Department, he switched to softball and played second base on the department team. He "made plays they can't believe he made," his father said.

Tommy's brother, Carlo, who is also a firefighter, was in the same class at the academy. "He was my go-to guy," Carlo said. "He would be there for me."

With his firefighting career under way, Thomas Casoria had time to think of his future and make his mother, Judy, happy. He was engaged on Oct. 22 a year ago and was set to be married on Oct. 13.

Dear family of Thomas Casoria,
I am from Atl ,GA and Have been holding your son and brother's card since 9/11/2001. At our Cathedral of Christ the King in ATL we picked cards of those who died. My Card said your son was a Firefighter for the NYFire Dept. World Trade Center last scene...I have prayed so many times for your son and his life cut short.
May eternal rest be his and perpetual light shine upon his soul .
God Bless each of you in your loss.

Hello Tommy, once again it's Laura from Texas. I knew your Uncle Vinny. I was best friends with his wife, Margaret, who is with you in heaven. Uncle Vinny called me to say that his son, your cousin Michael, had also left us to join you in heaven earlier this year.
I watched again with sadness, all the videos and recordings and voice messages left on that fateful day from all the victims calling out to their families one last time. I will never forget that day, even though I have been living in Texas for over 35 years. NYC always will be called home.
Rest in peace and watch over the Casoria Family.

Tom,
It has been 19 years and in some ways it seems like last year. I think it helps that we often feel your presence, especially when we need you.
We are having a great time with Carlo and his girlfriend Lynda. They spend a lot of time with Marie and I out at our house in the a Hampton Bays.
Today Carlo posted the photos when you were cleaning out the dry well in the back yard. We had a great laugh talking about that and many “Tommy” stories. It helps us miss you less. However you are now and always will be missed.
I love you.

Hi Tom,
Marie (ReRe) and I were very happy to get a sign from you today.
As were going out we both got that strong scent of smoke and burning wood
That we always get when you are around us.
Your cousin Jo-Ann and her boyfriend Brian also got a whiff of you, so you must have been making your
Rounds.
Although it is a sad day we get so many messages from family and friends that makes us feel good
that you are not forgotten and you never will be.
It is nice to know that Olympic Gold Medal winner Jim shea who won the Skeleton race wearing a
bracelet with your name on it, tells his family the same story every 9/11 and we still keep in touch.
Please keep watching over us and we will feel better knowing that.

Katia,
I am Carlo Sr., Thomas Casorias Father. My Grandfather Felice Casoria came to New York Circa 1903 from a small town in southern Italy called Cicciani which is about 20 or 30 KM from Naples.I believe that his father was named Anthony and that he left a sister still living in Italy. He had 6 children, My father Anthony being the oldest and his second son Carlo visited his fathers sister (name unknown) circa 1944 when he was in Italy fighting the war. We know little abut the family in Italy except that some cousins came to visit my grandfather Felice, a Simone and an Anthony circa 1935 and I believe that a least one female cousin (name unknown) came to visit Felice circa 1955 about 2 years before he died in April 1957.
My father had 5 Children, Philip, Vincent, Anthony, Carlo (me) and our sister Maria (Casoria-Supino). Philip and Vincent are over 80 and the rest of us are in our upper 70s.
We all have children, Phil has 4, Vinny has 3, Tony has 2, I had 3 before I lost Tommy and Maria has 2.

We did meet another Casoria family a few years ago and they are all descended from a Simone Casoria (not believed to be the cousin that visited Felice in circa 1935) However that family also come from Cicciani and that family settled in Scranton Pennsylvania, however most of that family is now in southern Florida.

Happy Birthday! I am late in writing to you because I have a new computer since I
last wrote to you and I was unable to get to this site until Marie wrote to you and
then the site writes to me to inform me that someone wrote to you. I also noticed that
The Chiropractor Gail Wasserman also wrote to you. You introduced her to me and I still use the
Chiropractors Dr Syat and Dr Segal who took her practice over and now they moved to
Bayside and are across the street from Carlos Fire House.
Of course you know that Carlo had his Hip replaced because he told me that you gave him
a sign that you were with him. We would like you to keep giving us signs that you are

Hi Tom,
This year we didnt go to the Mass that your Firehouse has every year because we are having our Whitestone Co-Op renovated. Thats right, all of the hard work that you and Carlo (Under Roccos direction) is being changed.
After all it has been 21 years and it was time. We still get a ton of well wishes from everybody and Cousin Jo-Ann who is taking Uncle Tonys house which I think you already know, because Jo-Ann found a some dimes on tails, so you are letting her know that you are there. She released a bunch of old pictures of you and they immediately brought back so many good memories of you.
We all miss you terribly and that has not changed a bit since you left us.
God Bless you!

17 Years ago and it still feels like just yesterday. I will never forget. We will never forget. Watching the Memorials this morning brings it all back home. I hung my flag outside this morning and I thought about Thomas and his entire family. When I took this picture this morning I thought it was amazing how the light shined clearly across his braves name on the bracelet his father sent me long ago. Thinking of you and all those whose lives were taken away so suddenly. Rest in Peace to all the warrior angels in Heaven.

You are talked about fondly still and my daughter found your name at the memorial site in NYC, she said it was very moving to be there as she was only about to celebrate her first birthday on that day so many years ago, which seems like only yesterday still. Tommy another year gone but never forgotten. Watched all the specials but it seems they are getting less each year. I remember how everyone flew a small flag attached to their cars in remembrance. Tom,
In my effort to tell you who I was talking to about you and also telling you about hurricane Irma that had the country glued to the TV, I didn't tell you how much I miss you and wish that I could talk about what you are doing now and not have to talk about the what you used to do.
I miss you every day of my life!

I also wanted to tell you about the fantastic job your brother Carlo did at our Hampton Bays house. He put up metal peg boards and organized all of our tools in both the garage and in the new basement that was built after our giant flood. I am sure that you are as proud as we are for the great job that he did around the house.
Oh how i wish that you were there to help him.

Tommy,

As I am sure you know, this year we had a lot of excitement because of hurricane Irma hitting the state of Florida where our condo is.
fortunately for us the storm shifted west and we only lot power for 2 days and all of the meat in our freezer, which is a lot, was saved.
Marie and I spent the weekend with Uncle Vic and Aunt Trinnie and of course we talked a lot about you. You were well remembered.
We also had dinner last night with Patty and Delores and once again you were the subject of our conversations.

I again want to thank all of those wonderful people who cared your name in the climbing events around the country, particularly are Asley who played the pipes and saw your picture on a quilt and 2 of you out of state brothers FF Justin Verenec who for the 7th year in a row climbed wearing your name in Shawnee KS and FF Matt Brooks in Wichita KS who will climb wearing your name this year.
On behalf of Tommy and the Casoria Family we thank you all and god Bless you!

Hi Tommy,

Well is has been 15 years and it still don't get any easier. Marie and I went to the Cemetery Friday so we would be able to put flowers closes to your beautiful stone for a change. Yesterday we went to the Mass for the 10 Battalion which your house is the main event.
Because it was the 15 anniversary, more people than usual were there and it was nice to see a lot of both FF families and many of your Brothers that are not always there. Of course Joe Downey, who I think is the only FF that worked with both you and Carlo was there. One Chief, a short guy, I didn't ask his name, but he hugs and kisses me every year, reminisced how you used to mime many celebrities, especially the Honeymooners, because he is a buff with them and he knew that you would go to work early so that you could see all of the guys on the present shift, and would stay late so that you could see all of the guys coming on the relieving shift and that is why all of your Brothers loved you. I will speak to Carlo later and see how his day went. He and your mom will be at Anthony's house today.
I will sign off now, keep those reminders that you are around
(like when i fell down the stairs) and keep an eye on beautiful Jennifer, (as if that is hard to do).

Love you

Dad

P.S I also wish to thank all of those that continue to carry my son's name with them in their running and walking events, especially Patricia Valle who will be running with tommy today in Texas.

Blessed to have had yet another opportunity to climb in your honor. This time in Oklahoma City on Sept 12. Another year passes but your name becomes more and more well known around the country. Your death was not in vain, your memory lives on and it is so amazing each year to see such an amazing gathering of firefighters and civilians climbing for the same purpose, to never forget. So refreshing in this world of so much pain and violence there are still a few good people out there doing good. We are short 343 good people, but their memory will forever live on.

A lot of things happened this past year, mainly that your niece Jackie is in college and your nephew Andrew is in HS and made the starting spot for the first Football game if he hadn't broke his hand today.
We have seen your number 22 I think more times this year than ever, so we are always thinking of you and we miss you terribly.

Hi Tom,

I carried your picture for the fourth consecutive year at the Red Rocks climb in Denver this morning. They actually made lanyards that we can keep instead of the stickers they have used in the past, so we will be able to keep your picture throughout the year. My daughter is 2 years old now and she rode on my back for the climb. She has been the last two years but she was too young to remember anything last year. You would not believe the number of children at the climb. I'm glad they will all grow up to remember our fallen heroes like you. Thanks again for your great sacrifice and I look forward to honoring your memory again next year.

Love you and miss you very much. I wish you would come to me in my dreams, I rarely see you there.
Love always,

Tom,
Well, Uncle another year has gone by since that terrible day that we lost you. We all still mis you terribly.
I haven't gone to your bench in Long Beach but Phil and Andromeda posted it in Facebook.
Marie and I went to the Memorial Museum with Uncle Tony, Cousin Jo-Ann, cousins Bobbie and Elaine, and her two sisters Coleen and Carol and their husbands
And we saw your name on the fountain parapet ad everything there was done very nicely.
Of course you know why your God Mother Aunt Terry wasn't there and we are all hoping that you are taking care of her, we miss her very much.
Marie said that she smelled your presence at our Hampton Bays house, I hope to notice something from you too so I know that you are still looking over for us.
Love you and miss you
Love always
Dad

Tommy,
It is now the twelfth year since you are gone and we all still miss you the same as we always do. I didn't do too much today except think about you and the good times that we always had. Marie and I watched the Memorial presentation and your cousin (Rosanne's cousin, the Police Capt. or Chief from Chicago), gave a great testimony in your behalf. Many people called, texted and emailed me for you.
Saturday Marie and I went to the Mass for your firehouse and we talked with your brothers at the reception afterwards. It was nice. Then we went to put flowers at your grave and then also went to St. Michael's Cemetery where a nice tribute was done for all of the first responders.
A few people carried your name in events in their states, FF Sara Athey , from the Denton Texas FD carried your name for the 3rd straight year at the 110 story climb. Also climbing 110 Stories ( I don't know if it is the same event?) was Justin Verbenec, also for the 3rd straight year. And Jim Lederer from Denver Colorado carried you name the 2nd straight year in a Memorial Walk. So you have been pretty popular and we thank these wonderful people. God bless them all and God bless you too Tom.
Love Dad

Remembering you and your 342 brothers who made the ultimate sacrifice in this day 12 years ago. You died while helping a paraplegic down a stairwell. You were the face of hope to so many that day. Heroism at its finest. Rest easy brother.

Dear Tommy,
This beautiful painting was done by Rick Martin who your dad never met...He tells the story of how he was supposed to paint someone else, but how you wanted him to paint you..and so he did... and here you are right next to where your dad sits ....watching over him...
May god bless today and always

Yesterday I had the honor of representing you while climbing 110 floors during the 3rd annual Dallas 9/11 memorial stair climb. This is my third year climbing in your honor. Me and my fellow brothers from Denton fire dept represented engine 22. Your name and photo were carried up 110 stories and posted on a board along with your 342 brothers. Though I've never met you we will forever be connected through the brotherhood and you will never be forgotten. Rest easy brother.

Hi Tom,
Just spent a wonderful Father's Day at Carlo's house. Of course the only way it could have been better is if you were there.
I still remember two Father's day that were particularly important to you. One was when we all went out to eat at the Clinton House restaurant. You were working that day at the Manhattan house where you finished you probation a month earlier and expected to meet us between 6 and 700PM. However you had your first major fire and didn't get to the restaurant until about 8:40 PM and we were having our dessert. You asked if you can still eat and we all said off course you can and you sat down and told Carlo all of the details of the fire while you enjoyed a well-earned meal.
The next was the last Father's day I saw you. It was at Carlo's house and about late afternoon your radio announced a major fire in Astoria where Engine 62 was, so you knew that your house brothers were on that tough fire and a Rescue truck came their also. It was announced that 4 firefighters were killed and one of the was Joe from your house, he was your baseball coach and you reminded me through your tears that you introduced him to me at some of your baseball games that I came to see.
You had spoken to Anthony and he said that it is traditional for all firefighters to go to the house on the day that one of their brothers was lost. So you left to go there to be with the rest of your brothers. It turns out the Joe was later pulled out of the rubble and survived with a broken hip and some other damage that forced him to go out on disability, but he gets around ok.
The other 3 brothers from Rescue were lost, but I don't think that you knew them.
The FDNY was still morning those 3 brave men when 9/11 happened and we lost you and 342 of your brothers.
We miss you dearly Tommy and we hope that you are taking care of you Uncle Joe and Marie's Niece Jennifer that always admired you since she met me and heard about you.
God Bless you all!
Love Dad

Tom,
I hear that you were there to welcome Uncle Joe.
I am sure that you will take care of him and show him the ropes.
I saw a lot of your cousins and friends at Uncle Joe's wake and you cousin Susie was telling Marie how you used to meet her with coffee and donuts before you two went on you annual Christmas shopping spree.
Off course as always, we all miss you. God Bless
Dad
