James Cappers Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 13, 2001.

In her junior year at Quinnipiac College, Kathleen Vieira spotted a new man on campus. He was tall. He was handsome. He was wearing a pink rugby shirt.

"Who is that guy?" she asked her friends. Nobody knew.

Turns out he was a transfer student named James Christopher Cappers, a.k.a. Chris, a.k.a. Clark Kent (whom he resembled).

"Fresh from getting out of the phone booth," said Steven M. Vaughn, a friend since sixth grade.

Ms. Vieira and Mr. Cappers married in 1995, on April 22, a date they selected by combining their birthdays, Sept. 4 (April is the fourth month) and Aug. 22.

It was also Earth Day, a good fit, considering that some of the Cappers' favorite times together were spent hiking, camping and introducing Alex, who will turn 3 on Dec. 30, to the thrills of sleeping in a tent. Mr. Cappers, 33, was a personal client executive at Marsh & McLennan.

Mrs. Cappers recently gave Alex and Andrew, seven months old, special teddy bears sewn from their Daddy's old shirts. "I'm trying to find that pink rugby for myself," she said. "I think about him all the time."

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on December 2, 2001.

Chris Cappers, 33, strong and steadfast

At Quinnipiac University, the brothers of Alpha Chi Rho liked to call Chris Cappers "Clark Kent." Tall and handsome, when he wore his eyeglasses he was the epitome of clean-cut.

"The nickname was appropriate," said Cappers' older brother, Mark, "especially when he wore his eyeglasses. He was tall and thin, the strong, silent type, and the most incredibly steadfast and moral person you could ever meet."

James Christopher Cappers, 33, grew up in New Jersey -- in Fair Haven and Long Valley. At the time of his death on Sept. 11, he was living with his wife, Kathleen Viera Cappers, and their two children, Alexander, 2, and Andrew, 6 months, in Wading River, N.Y.

An assistant vice president at Marsh & McLennan Cos., Mr. Cappers, a private client broker, worked on the 94th floor of the North Tower at the World Trade Center.

Born in Atlanta, Mr. Cappers graduated from Valley Forge Military Academy in Pennsylvania and from Quinnipiac in Hamden, Conn., with a degree in finance. He began working for Marsh & McLennon in their Morristown office 10 years ago.

A rugby and lacrosse player in college, Mr. Cappers was an avid camper who often backpacked with his wife in the Adirondacks and on Martha's Vineyard.

"Most of all, he just liked getting out in the yard and kicking the soccer ball around with his son," said Mr. Cappers' father, Murray.

In addition to his wife and two children, Mr. Cappers is survived by his parents, Murray A. and Peggy Cappers, and his brother, Mark, all of Long Valley.

A memorial Mass is scheduled for 2 p.m. tomorrow at St. Anselm's Episcopal Church in Shoreham, N.Y. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the J. Christopher Cappers Memorial Fund, North Shore Public Library, 250 Route 25A, Shoreham, N.Y. 11786, or to St. Anselm's Episcopal Church, 55 North Country Road, Shoreham, N.Y. 11786.

From darkness to light. Five years ago these words were on a candle that our church had us sponsor, along with the name of one of the victims of this sad day. Your name came to me. I've have prayed for you ever since and lit the candle again today in your honor... as we remember. Blessings to you and the loved ones you left behind.

Chris and I went to Qunnipiac together, though I didn't know him well, though we played on the Lacrosse team together were often linemates. Since graduating Quinnipiac I have lived and worked in NYC, and as Chris did, I too work in finance. Gods just had different plans for us I guess. From what I remember, he was talented, personable, and always polite. Chris will always remain in my prayers and thoughts this time every year.

Chris and I were room mates our freshman year at Wake Forest. We shared a lot of laughs and late night talks. He did not have the false cockiness so typical of young men. Instead, he was thoughtful, generous, and considerate. He would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. I remember one time my girlfriend was going to be in Chapel Hill to visit one of her friends and I had no way to get her to Winston-Salem. "No problem," said Chris, "I'll drive you there and we'll pick her up." And we did. I am so sorry for his family's loss, but his children will be his legacy.

I worked with Murray, Chris's Dad, in Atlanta.

Am thinking of the Cappers family today.

To the Family of Mr. Cappers:

My wife and I rode in America's 911 Ride on August 18-21, 2011. The purpose of this motorcycle run was to honor and remember the heroes and victims of 911.

Each participant in this run was given a card with the name of an individual 911 victim that we were riding in honor and memory of. Our card was in honor of Chris and I'd like his family to have it if you are interested. If so, please e-mail me and I'd be happy to get it to you.

May God bless Chris and all of you.

I attended the Santa Cruz County 9/11 Memorial today in Watsonville, CA where the Boy Scouts handed out flags with names on them for each of the victims of 9/11. My flag had your name on it. I wanted to let your family know I'm thinking of them and you will not be forgotten.

Kit and family,
I can't believe it has been 7 years.
My prayers are with you and your family. Chris aka Clark will always be remembered in my house thanks to the paddle that he made me for being his Alpha Chi Rho big brother. It is one of my most cherished things from college. Once again my prayers are with you and your family.

I worked with Chris at Marsh for a short time. He was so nice to help me become knowledgeable of Marsh. We would take the subway to the LIRR with a few other people on the way home and we would talk about the day. God Bless his Wife and Children, I will always remember him in my prayers.

My prayers go out to the Cappers family. I attended Valley Forge with Chris and was in the E Battery with him. He was a good friend, and was funny. I remember going on a ski trip with him and we were all just learning how to ski.

My name is Nick Giedris and I attend St. Pius X High School in Houston, TX. In order to remember those who died due to the events of September 11th, our Student Council made wristbands-one for every person who died- including the name of the person, and their age. I am lucky enough to have picked someone who seems to have been a truly terrific person. Please know that my thoughts and the thoughts of everyone in my school community and the country are with you.

To The Cappers Family,

I cannot express what a loss we have experienced. Chris was a personhably, vibrant and enthusiastic young man whom everyone loved. As a brother of Alpha Chi Rho, Chris exemplified all that is good in humankind; caring, compassion, humor and loyalty. Chris will always be remembered as "the mild mannered reporter" due to his easy going personality and calm demeanor.

Kit, I hope you find soloace in knowing that Chris was loved by everyone he met, including me.

It is with a very heavy heart that I write this entry. I wish to express my deepest condolences to Chris' wife, Kathleen, his children, Alex and Andrew, his parents and the rest of his family and friends. I worked with Chris for a few years and although I did not know him that well, I very much enjoyed working with him for the short time that I did. It was extremely obvious to everyone who knew Chris how much he loved and enjoyed his family. May God Bless him and his family and may he rest in peace.

With Deepest Sympathy,

Mary O'Donoghue

What a heart touching story of your love and the teddy bears made for the children from daddy's shirt. We are deeply sorry for your loss of James. May his life and love continue living in his children and all who love him. May you always feel the warmth of his love radiate into your hearts. May the sorrow you feel be lightened by warm memories of moments shared with James. Our hearts cry with you.

America Cries

We see your sorrow-

and our hearts cry....

We can not erase your pain

but you do not have to face the anguish alone-for we-

-the American people-

are beside you.

We so desperately want to have the touch that brings you comfort,

the strength that gives you courage,

and the words to lighten your spirits.

And when we are left speechless

may the silence of our nation weave love into your hearts

to ease your sorrow.

May you find healing through our nation's strength as we-

-the American people-

face this difficult time together. Our hearts are with you. Teresa Jahn
