Kathy Mazza Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 15, 2001.
The 'Family Fisherperson'
When Kathy Mazza threw her line into the water, fish couldn't resist.

At least, it always seemed that way. Ms. Mazza didn't get to fish as much as she would have liked in recent years, but she was known as the "family fisherperson" because of her chronic success.

When she was growing up and went fishing with her brothers, she was the one who came home loaded down with all the fish. "On our honeymoon, we went to Acapulco and we went deep-sea fishing," said her husband, Christopher Delosh. "No one got anything, except her. She hooked a sailfish. It took her 90 minutes to reel it in, but she did it."

Ms. Mazza, 46, lived in Farmingdale, N.Y., with Mr. Delosh. She was a police captain with the Port Authority, and the first female commander at its police training academy. Trained as a nurse, she taught emergency medical service at the academy, a fact not lost on her neighbors.

"Everyone in the neighborhood would come to the house when anything was wrong," Mr. Delosh said. "Like, a young man across the street hurt his hand and he was with his grandmother, who didn't know what to do. Another neighbor was having chest pains. It turned out she was having a heart attack."

Some years ago, Ms. Mazza saved her own mother's life. Her mother complained of chest pains, and Ms. Mazza recognized that her arteries were blocked.

I did a project on you in my criminal justice class, I read every single comment on this and read so much about your life. I wasn’t even born when this tragedy happened and although it’s horrible, I’m thankful you were there to save so many. I only wish you could have been saved as well. Thank you for being so selfless and a hero. You are not forgotten.

Am not quite sure why it's taken me this long to sign Kathy's guest book, but am finally doing it. I first met Kathy when we were both working at St Francis Hospital. Then - oddly enough - I began working at Nassau CC, and Kathy was a student in the very first class that I taught! She was a remarkable person and made an indelible impression on me and on so many others. Not a year goes by that I don't think of her and pray for her. My continuing condolences to all who knew and loved Kathy.

Over 17 years now, and every year I remember our visit to your mom's house. Our village still holds an annual memorial ceremony. We attend every year, and the crowds seem to get bigger every year. So many of those in attendance this year weren't even born when our world changed. I hope that people will never forget, but it will happen someday as time passes.

I just learned that there is a memorial park in your honor on Long Island. I hope to visit it someday. It looks like a lovely place.

Hi Kathy,

Stopped by to see you again. I have been working myself into my annual depression for the last few days. You and the other 36 get my undivided attention during this annual Memorial time.

Kathy, know that so many people remember you, have heard of your exploits, and keep you in their hearts and minds. It is an honor to know you and benefit from your vast knowledge.

As long as Libby and I are alive, you will be alive in our memories. We will say your name and tell others what an honorable and heroic person you are..

Today and last year I dedicated my stair climb to Cathy Nancy Mazza in San Diego, CA (San Diego 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb). this climb is in remembrance of the first responders who risked and gave their lives to save the lives of others. I picked this brave woman to represent my climb because she was courageous, brave and demanded equity in the workplace. For as long as I participate in this climb, I will always climb with Cathy Nancy Mazza, and I thank her and pray for her spirit, that it still continues to make this world a better place, and her influence is still among us-

I knew Kathy throughout her Freshman year of High School. She became a fast friend and helped a shy, nervous kid get through that year. She was down to earth and funny and she taught me a few things about people. It was 1969-70 and she spoke to me about fishing with her brother, and I spoke to her about my Dad, Port Authority Sgt.Dan Roper, and his involvement with the building of the twin towers. That irony struck me hard when I learned of Kathy's heroism. I know that she is at peace and still involved in her family's lives as she watches over them. Kathy, the girls from "Mercy" will never forget.

Those of us lucky enough to have known Kathy always knew she was destine for greatness. Kathy always strove to prove that she was as tough as any guy. I met Kathy in the bagel store, not only was she the sole female baker in the business, she was the fastest baker in the shop. Kathy broke me in taught me to bake and set me up to take her hours in the shop when she left for nursing school. I had a great run in that spot prior to joining the NYPD. I learned a lot more than how to bake bagels from Kathy; she was a mentor and a friend.
Kathy, as we near ten years and I’m still so proud to tell my people you are my friend. I always have a few funny Kathy stories for the kids. My best to Johnny, Ronnie & Vick

Hi Kathy,

I attended a 9/11 memorial service in Chittenango on Thursday. Even after 7-years, a lot of people get emotional; including me. I am glad that I live in a community that still holds this annual remembrance. Whether it be for economic reasons, or a desire to put that dreadful day behihd them, too many communities seem too willing to just let the day pass as if it held no signficance.

Other than July 4th, I can think of no other single date in American history that has had such an impact on so many aspects of our lives.

If I am fortunate enough, our paths may again cross. Take care cuz.

Kathy,

It has been 6-years. And even though we only ever met the one time, I cannot forget you. 4-years ago, I made up a small placard about you. It has a picture of you in your Port Authority Police uniform, and excerpts from the book “Police Heroes” and the “Portraits in Grief” series from the New York Times. For 51-weeks of the year, I keep this hanging in my cubicle here in Liverpool, NY. But this week I put it on the company’s bulletin board. I want other people here to see what a truly remarkable person you are. I am glad to see people passing down the hall, catch sight of it, stop, and take the time to read through it.

Every year, my wife and I go to the New York State Fair. There is a 9-11 Memorial there, and every year, I find your name among the departed, and run my fingers over it and cry. This year my mother, Catherine Colbert (Sample-Fazio), your grandmother’s niece, came to visit and we took her to the memorial. While at the fair, I met a couple firefighters who helped with the search and rescue at ground zero. There was so much running through my head that I wanted to ask them, but when the opportunity presented itself, I found myself almost unable to speak.

Kathy, thanks again for allowing me to be a part of your life; even if it was only for a couple of days.

I Recently recieved a memorial bracelet for Christmas. My brother was looking for a female firefighter who had died on 9-11 because I am a female firefighter but there apparently were not any who died that day. Instead he requested a female police officer because they are just as honorable as firefighters and since my dad is a disabled police officer I hold them close to my heart also. To the family and friends of Kathy, I will wear this bracelet everyday and remember her. She is an inspiration. She will be remembered.

Kathy and I are distant cousins. My grandfather (Caremelo Fazio) and her grandmother were brother & sister. I had to the good fortune of meeting Kathy and having dinner in her Mother's house back in 1980.

What I remember most about her was her great sense of humor and her kindness. We no sooner arrived when she started razzed us about being hillbillies from West Virgina; being "suprised" when we showed up wearing shoes; and pointing out that in NY, they had indoor plumbing. It was all in jest, and I loved it. That night, she took me and my brother out and introduced us to some of her friends. I had a great time, and will always cherish those memories.

Thanks Kathy
