Isaias Rivera Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 28, 2001.
A Veteran of 1993

On the very same perilous aerie, the 110th-floor television transmission center atop the north tower, Isaias Rivera had lived through it before: the explosion, the smoke, the desperate evacuation.

As a technician for CBS, Isaias, 51, had been in the center on Feb. 26, 1993, when a bomb went off in the basement. Besides trying to keep WCBS on the air, he also helped in the rescue efforts, working until the next day, recalled William Rodriguez, whose daughter was Isaias's godchild. Isaias had five children of his own and lived in Perth Amboy, N.J. His wife, Nilsa, is a nurse.

Isaias was employed by CBS for 30 years, Mr. Rodriguez said, and was the last veteran of the 1993 bombing still stationed on the 110th floor. ''He wasn't the same person after that,'' Mr. Rodriguez said. ''He had fears of those things happening again.''

Profile published in THE NEW YORK TIMES on September 21, 2001.

Isaias Rivera, 51, turned around troubled teens Ivan Delgado is a child psychiatrist in Iowa. Nitza Hollinger is a lawyer in Alaska. Judith Cruz is a surgery technician in upstate New York. Pedro Garcia is a policeman in Washington, D.C.

All of them grew up in Spanish Harlem.

None of them would be where they are, they said, if not for Isaias Rivera. Mr. Rivera, then in his early 20s, taught teens the Bible and clean living at Hispana Pentecostal Church.

"Those were mean streets, man," Hollinger said. "To see a good, clean teen just kind of says I don't have to go the route of everybody else in Harlem. And we did it, we made it -- so many of us."

After the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 -- when the 51-year-old Mr. Rivera was at work as a maintenance engineer at the CBS transmitter on the 110th floor of One World Trade Center -- former students poured into his Perth Amboy house from across the country.

"We call ourselves Isaias' children," said Cruz, now 39.

Cruz became a magnet for the wrong boys in her early teens. Her school attendance became shaky. Mr. Rivera was a relentless nag.

"He kept on me and on me. He always said that I was made for great things, that even though I was Spanish and I was a minority, in God's eyes there are no minorities," Cruz said. "He was annoying."

Now Cruz has a home, a husband, two kids and a good job.

"Isaias knew me as little Judy, always in trouble," she said, gently weeping. "Well you know what, little Judy grew up okay."

Among young Delgado's weaknesses were drugs. Then 15, he joined an informal group of teens that would hang out in Mr. Rivera's apartment after church, eat bread and coffee, talk religion and laugh a lot.

Delgado straightened out and set off on a path that would lead through the Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx.

He ran into Mr. Rivera at a church service a few months after graduating.

"You're a doctor now!" his mentor said, sporting that familiar, infectious smile and bursting with pride.

Mr. Rivera used to say he had a vision -- all his students under his roof at once, together with each other, with God.

It happened after his death. They packed the house, hundreds strong, their own children in tow.

"His dream came true," Cruz said. "All the young people he had ministered to were in his house. But he wasn't there."

Surviving Mr. Rivera are his wife Nilsa, their daughter Lynnette, their sons Isaias Jr., Adrian and Antonio, and three grandchildren.

Pops, I felt a sense of peace I haven't felt before. 23 years...now your son, Pedro is with you. He is finally free from his pain. He has you beside him. Miss you both so much.

Another year has passed by, and I find myself wanting to have learned more from you. A man with so much knowledge and a true friend. I have my IT business running and doing well. I'm also the sound engineer at church and doing the broadcasting and learning how to mix lights into that. It's a daunting task but I'm getting it. My kids are getting bigger my son is 13 and my daughter is 11. I spent 1 year learning how to walk again from a fire I went to last year that left me with blood poison and 3rd degree burns on my forearm. It's been a long recovery but with God I'm doing it. I knew I could always go to you when I needed prayer....the stupidity of being a teenager gets to me cause I made so many mistakes I wish I could of learned more with the short amount of time that we had. Take care Isaias tell God I need some help and to send down a few blessings for me, and also ask God when can he have un encuentro with my son cause he just had one with my daughter.

Wow another year has passed and so much has changed all I can tell you is that I have decided to quit my job, and open up my own IT business, and it has been going very well! I have also decided to become a fireman. I have left the church that we were at last year and went to a church much closer although it is not spanish my kids love it there. I have so much left to learn when it comes to broadcasting as the sound of air and how to differentiate all the instruments and proper placement. I truly do admire your knowledge on broadcasting as there are so many factors that no one ever thinks about. But I'm still giving it my all.

Another year has gone by and now I live in Pa, we attend a church in Scranton and I handle the media dept of the church. I still mentor youth's through social media. I still tell others about you every year that passes. And to think that we have so many things in common. You knew how to handle media and broadcasting, and now I'm doing it. I still have many questions about broadcasting that I have to learn. Reaching out to youth's is a had thing to do as you have to grow with them and see if God still appeals to them. There are so many things that I learned from you, and I took it for granted not realizing that you were the vase of knowledge that I would need in the future.

Heres mom...your twin :-)

As I sit here in the hospital with my mom Gloria Gonzalez, one of Tio Isaias younger sisters, I remember all of the great times we spent together. How supportive he was of my mother in good and bad times. How he loved us and how his smile lit up a room. I remember how much knowledge he had and how much advice he gave towards problem solving. I remember the truck that almost ran us over when we were coming out of his job and how calm and collected he was. Tio we miss you greatly but we will see you again at the heavenly gates. I know your having a blast up there with the Lord and his heavenly hosts! Love you!

As the years go by, I see more and more how much my mom Gloria Gonzalez looks so much like my uncle. I want to cry and smile at the same time. He loved story telling, history, music, working in God's ministry. I see him in my mom as she shows love in the same areas he loved. I do wish he was still here to enjoy everyones journey and milestones reached. He would be so proud of his children, his wife, his sisters and brothers, nephews and nieces. Everyone has grown and multiplied...Its pretty clear what he reaped, we sowed. ohhh how we miss him so! Till we meet again tio! Love you!

Another year has passed and your vision is turning into mine. I've become passionate about preaching to the youth's in the past year my wife and I have bought a house in Pa for the glory of God. We have started a new chapter in our lives. We have started to find a new church and my mother law from El Salvador is here now to stay; what a blessing. I'm still counseling youth from here in Pa through instagram and facebook. We have left a legacy of childrens church to other hands that can pick up from where we left off. My wife and I are looking to see where we can serve and use our gifts for the expansion for the kingdom of God. Broadcasting have been what I've been doing for the past 9 years, and now I have found new ways to broadcast. I wish you were around so you can see what I'm doing now. I know that you would be so happy to see God's word getting out. La avenida de Cristo es cerca pero esa palabra de Dios esta llegando a todo los lados del mundo. I wish I knew a little more of broadcasting so I can fix small issues. I hope you are enjoying heaven. we miss you. take care and God bless and till me meet again.

Another year has gone by and I realized how valuable you are. Maybe time shows you more about that 1 person than what you ever could have learned if they were here. I'm mentoring to troubled teens, I have learned a new language to speak and learning how to broadcast is so very hard especially when it comes to editing and no one is there to show you. I saw your twin the other day at Walmart I almost passes out, but then I gave God thanks cause I know you are next to him. Miss you and thank you for everything. Until we meet again in the sky.

Today we celebrate the 13th Anniversary of when our Isaias went home to be with our Lord Jesus Christ. While 13 years is a long time for many, to us it seems like yesterday. Our hearts still break and our souls still ache for our loss. Isaias is dancing up in the clouds rejoicing he made it to heaven and is looking down upon us cheering us on to stay strong and faithful as we serve our Lord. My family and I thank you all for honoring his memory once again! We are truly blessed to have your love and support. Till we meet again Isaias, keep smiling down upon us! Titi Nilsa...I send you a great big hug. I remember tio's great smile. I miss his stories he used to share about he growing up, or his history lessons he loved to share whether we wanted to hear or not! I remember how much coffee he drank to pull those overnight shifts and his coffee breath...lol. I admired tio and his love for God and for people. I remember how much he loved you and his kids. Tio was an amazing man. We were blessed with his presence. Though he's gone home to be with our Lord his legacy remains. I miss him greatly. I also miss you too titi. Keep in touch. Love you.

I did not know Mr. Rivera personally. I found his name on the list for the Facebook Remember Me Virtual Memorial. He was one of the five I chose to memorialize. I just want to join my Step Daughter Lynnette in thanking all of you who once again has kept my husband's memory alive, even after 11 years. He was a devoted husband, a cherished friend, and a loving father. He spread the love of Jesus Christ to whoever came in contact with him and today we see the results of his love for his people , now returning their love for him. How wonderful is that! You all bring tears of joy to my heart for I know he was proud of every single one of you. Let's keep the faith alive and hope that we shall all see him again. @ Samuel Hernandez, I agree that he had an infectious smile. It is one of the reasons I fell in love with him. Thank you for your kind words. @ Jose Sanchez, you brought me such great joy knowing that Isaias impacted you so much that you became a YOUTH PASTOR! How great is that! It does not surprise me one bit. This truly was is legacy and once again he is still reaping the joys of his labor here on earth. You make me so proud. Keep up the good works. :) @ my dear and sweet friend Mari, while it pains me to hear that your mom has gone to be with the Lord, I too rejoice and envy that they reached their goals and have won the great battle. To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. They conquered their Victory and remained faithful to the Lord. It is bitter sweet all in one. I have wonderful memories of her and how much we laughed together. She was precious! We celebrate her life in Jesus! Amen! Halleluyah! She will be sorely missed just like Isaias. God Bless You Sweetheart and keep pressing on in Jesus! With all my love I send to ALL OF YOU, I pray that we will all meet again, if not here on earth , definitely in heaven. Praise God Almighty!

I want to tell my grandpa that my mom told me lots of funny stories about you and i like them because they make me laugh and think abot you. I didnt get to know you like a lot of grandsons know there granpa but i wish i did.My mom got a watch for mita mita and i found it and it has your picture in it. i wore it everyday until the bands broke and now i need new ones. it makes me mad and sad that you died. Dad,
Today is the first time your grandchildren Isaiah 7yrs & Liana 5yrs understood you are in heaven. They realized that they never had the chance to meet such a great man. Although they were sadden for the lost of something they will never have they were very excited to honor you today and laid flowers at the memorial in your name. You are so missed and loved. Embedded in our hearts forever.

Eight years have gone by since i lost my godfather but warm memories still envelop my heart. one i hold close to my heart is when i was a little girl my father and Isaias both worked in NewYork and on days when i would go with my father into the city we would often meet Isaias on the bus and he would put me on his shoulders and walk me through the city. I remember my godfather as beeing an honest man with a big heart i think about him everday and his family. To Nilsa i miss you alot and as i write this i'm crying because you both were my other parents and it saddens me to know its been years since we last spoke i will love to see you all and hear from you.
i love you
your Goddaughter Amanda

Eight years have gone by, but to me it's as if it happened today, when Jesus called you home to be with him in heaven. Your friends, family and I miss you very much. To all who have kept my husbands memory alive in words, in song and in your hearts, THANK YOU! I was deeply touched by the outpouring of love for him and rightfully so. He definitely made an impact on all of our lives. My life and those of our children, will never, ever be the same again but we have hope in Jesus that we shall see him again some day. Thank you for all yours prayers, and best wishes. God Bless you all!

It's incredible that 2 events happened in 9/11. At 4 years old ,when my father died, I lost my 2 front teeth. I thought it was special and I wanted to show him. But as it turned out, he wasn't going to see them. He wasn't going to come home. Ever. He died and I still cry when I think about him. He still is alive though. He lives in my family's hearts. And even though we can't see him we remember him and I know that he won't be forgotten. But look on the bright side, he's in a whole lot better place than here. He parties everyday. And while we live here , he lives in heaven and in our hearts. He isn't alone either. Other people r still in shock because they lost loved ones, but they are all in a better place and that's what counts. I luv u dad and i miss u a whole lot more than anyone else could.

Today is a hard day to get through. I just wanted to thank everyone for their support throughout the years that have passed. I am grateful and appreciative of all who have left such kind and inspiring words concerning my father's legacy. I'm thankful that after all these years people still continue to keep his memory alive. Pop, your presence is sorely missed.Obviously all of our lives have been altered tremendously. Although we had many ups and downs and I wish our relationship wasn't as turbulent as it was I want you to know that the good memories stand out the most. I love you and miss you terribly. Once again thank you to all. God Bless

To Titi Nilsa n family, my thoughts n prayers are with u all. Eventhough, I don't get to see you all as often as before that sad day, I always think about you guys. Miss you all! I remember the last time we shared with Tio Isaias, it was at mom's house in Luquillo, sitting on d stools, mom in d kitchen late at night. Elisa was there also. It was after abuelos funeral. the month before, Aug 01. He was counting how many each of his brothers n sisters had how many kids n grandkids. About Abuela n how many grand n great grandchildren she had. Just how big our family was. How we all came together for abuelo's funeral. Then not even a month later we were all there in NY having a Memorial Service for him. Love u Tio Isaias. Till we reunite again, tu sobrina, Mariela
