Pauline and Family,
I am a witness to what a wonderful loving family is. In my family (Erin Summers) my brother, parents, sisters, and I are not as close as we would like to be. Watching how much Leland was loved and cared for caused me to realize the important things in life, family. All of your unwavering support and love towards Leland, in a motivational sense, has been partially responsible for my reaching out effort to rekindle my family ties.
The day Leland passed away it seemed like a cloud was covering Redeemer; Almost every worker had some sort of connection to Leland, one of his family members, or long-time friends. I am sad that Leland is gone, but I am equally as sad to lose your family/friends as a part of the Redeemer family. Thank you all for teaching us what kindness looks like in people.
With loving kindness, admiration, and Respect,
Erin Summers

Singing in the Augsburg choir under Dr. Sateren was a unique education, and I learned something different with each composer (including Dr. Sateren) and poet. What a rich range of experiences was created by being a part of his choir--certainly a highlight of my Augsburg years. For me, he exempefied the motto "Education for service."

When I think of Lee I see a young new church secretary seeing someone of great importance and shaking in her shoes that she will say the wrong thing or make a mistake in the bulletin that he has drafted himself and he wants it just this way. From this first meeting spanned a friendship of 25 + years and I have been truly blessed by it.
Now this man rests in peace in the company of the saints and his memory will be with me the rest of my life.
To Pauline and all the family I send my words of support and love and may God lift you up now and in the days ahead.
A memorial gift will be given to the Music Ministry at Hope Lutheran Church in Moose Lake in his memory.

To all of you at this time of loss:
We here at Hope Lutheran have wonderful memories of Leland directing the Sand Lake Choir and his presence here in the summer. As for me, I remember, when I directed Hope Choir, always being jittery when I saw him come in to church on a Sunday when my choir was singing!! He was a talented man and left a legacy of music in our church, I know. We are singing the song he wrote for the 35th anniversary of Hope on Sunday, "The Holy Spirit Poured", as a tribute to him, as well as his melody for "As Saints of Old" for the Thanksgiving Eve service.

Terry, Kirsten, Roald, Mark, and Pauline. My sympathy and prayers are with all of you as you ponder the deep loss of your amazing, incredible Father and Husband. I don't have choir memories but I do have "home" memories. Conversations were always stimulating, often deep, enthusiastic, challenging, and poignant!Sometimes the conversation felt more like a chess game than a conversation. May your fondest memories of Leland keep you close to each other and comforted in the days ahead. My love to all of you, Jean (Winje) Christie

My deepest sympathies on the loss of an amazing man. As a piano major at Augsburg (class of 1975), I only had a few classes from him, but his presence was felt everywhere in that little white church revamped into the Music building. I well remember that if you yawned in class, he might comment "You can put a lot of hay in that hole!" I will be thinking of him at Vespers this year.

a great man in the world of music has left our midst.
Lee was unforgettable and left his mark on Augsburg and on the world of choral music. Lee's compositions and great flair as a conductor influenced his students and proteges. The man is gone but the legend continues.

My deepest sympathy to your family. I wanted to share a very special memory I have of Mr. Sateren. Although I did not know him personally, I did meet him once at a hymn sing at Central Lutheran Church about 14 years ago. It was a momentous occassion for me to meet this man who knew my grandparents well enough to compose a wedding march for them. My grandparents have both since past, but I know that all of their children walked down the aisle to his music and the original work is framed and passed around my aunts and uncles. I was also honored to walk down the aisle to his music. For that I am thankful for his gift and his life.

Pauline, I am thinking of you and your family as you mourn the loss of your beloved Leeland. You had a wonderful life full of love for each other and love of family and love of music. Tim and I had the radio on and we heard the National Lutheran Choir sing one of Lee,s songs which MPR did in memory of him. It was just beautiful, as are his songs which I have been blessed to sing with you and our Normandale Choir. He will long be remembered as we and many other choirs continue to sing his works.
Now, Pauline, he is in heaven singing with the angels. He is probably composing music for heaven as well, making it an even more spendid place to be. He suffers no more and you should have great peace in that.
I will see you soon. God's peace be with you and your loved ones in this time of great loss.

52 years ago my wife was in the maternity wing of Fairview and I needed to be with her and our new daughter, Martha. I also needed to be in Professor Sateren's Harmony I Class. Unable to attend these important early in the semester classes, I expressed my concern to Professor Sateran who immediately offered to tutor me privately during evening hours at the old music building. This was Leland Sateren, always willing to go the extra mile, when and where needed.
A few years earlier I had the great pleasure of singing and touring with the Augsburg Choral Club, which he led until assuming the directorship of the Augsburg College Choir following the death of Professor Henry P. Opseth. In later years, while serving on our local school board, Professor
Sateren came to our assistance in locating one of the finest music teachers our school district ever had, one of his students, of course.
Augsburg College and quality church music will long continue to feel the impact of the life of Professor Leland B. Sateren.

I can only echo what Leann Anderson Baker wrote...she said it all. I was in the Augsburg Choir 1966-69, went to New York to sing at the United Nations (the trip Kristin and Roald went along on), and learned everything I ever needed to know about singing in a choir from Dr. Sateran. I've often thought of him over the years. My deepest sympathy to his family.

To Pauline, Kirsten, Roald and all family members...my sincere sympathy to you all on the passing of a truly great man...I have so many fond memories..."good night nurse", blackberry brandy, waving his handkerchief during The Morning Trumpet (signifying passion when he heard it)...there are so many more!

I came To Augsburg as a music major in l955.The years in the Choir and Dr Sateren's classes are an integral part of me still, rather embedded, I think.Every time I sing anywhere, his influence is there,Those past years and times are in the forming of me, and many others, now and always. We didn't say Thank You to him enough.Thank you to a truly great man in every way. Fondly, LeAnn Anderson, class of l959.

Dear Pauline,
When you chaired the Orff Chapter you entertained the Board at your home several times. It was my good fortune to converse with your scholarly, friendly, husband while you were busy with serving. I shall put both of you in my prayers. May his soul rest in peace with the Savior he served. It is my hope to see you again. My sincerest sympathy to you, Pauline, and to the family,

I came to Augsburg almost 40 years ago from a little village in central Minnesota. I was blessed to sing for four years in the Augsburg choir under Dr. Sateren. I have great memories of tours and of Kirsten and Roald accompanying the choir to New York. Dr. Sateren set a standard for music excellence and character that has influenced me ever since. My sympathies to the family.

Dear Pauline and all the Sateren family. Clair and Lee became good friends when Clair was manager of the choir. He was there to welcome Lee as he entered the gates of heaven. Peace be with you. gladys

My deepest sympathy to Pauline and the children on Lee's passing. When he was at Augsburg, and I was in my 20's, I sat in on his choir rehearsal and was blown away by the choir's performance of Nystedt's "O Crux." It has stayed with me all these years. His is indeed a spirit that lives on...

I am sue that I will think of many fond memories this week and be able to add to this message. Maybe enough for a short book. Lee taught us to water ski up at the cabins on Sand Lake and was always ready and willing to take us out no matter what he was in the middle of doing. For all I know we could have interrupted his composing just to make sure that all of us cousins were having the most fun possible. I will look for photos.
Lee lived a full life and touched many other lives along the way.
His love of music and his passion for composing and conducting was a gift few could understand without knowing him.
God Bless Leland.
