Anthony Alfred "Tony" Gioia

Anthony Alfred "Tony" Gioia of Augusta, MI Tony, age 81, died Monday January 4, 2016, at his residence and with his loving family at his side. Tony, the son of Patrick and Eugenia (Mencuccini) Gioia, was born in Torrington, CT on April 7, 1934. He graduated from Torrington High School in 1951 and married Kathleen Rourke in 1954. Tony served his Country honorably and nobly as a Major in the United States Air Force-Strategic Air Command. He graduated from the University of Connecticut with a B.A. in 1955; received his M.A. in 1961 and a PhD in 1964 from the University of Missouri of Columbia. Tony taught mathematics at the University of Missouri, Texas Tech University and Western Michigan University, retiring in 1996 from Western. Tony remarried Mary Patricia "Pat" (nee: Rogers) Turner on December 29, 1978 in Kalamazoo, MI. Surviving is his wife of 37 years, Pat; his son, Michael A Gioia of FL; a sister, Lucia Bivins of Lafayette, LA; five step-daughters, Constance P. Turner of Kalamazoo, Anne M. Turner of Exeter, CA, Roberta L. (William) Jones of Waukegan, IL, Nancy L. Turner of Richland, MI and Jane R. Turner of Kalamazoo; two step-sons, Nicholas W. (Beth) Turner of Kalamazoo and Stephen (Dawn) Turner of Clarkston, MI; nine grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Tony was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Kathleen and a son, Patrick . As per his request, cremation was held and there will be no service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Tony's honor may be directed to the Western Michigan University-Math Department, 1903 W. Michigan Avenue, Kalamazoo, MI 49008-5248. The Farley Estes Dowdle Funeral Home & Cremation Care, Richland Chapel (269-629-6022) assisted Tony's family with his arrangements.
