Capt. George Grkovic

Capt. George Grkovic, USN (Ret.),a resident of the Annapolis area since 1988, died of heart disease on March 27, 2007 at Anne Arundel Medical Center. Born in Salmon, Idaho on January 24, 1920, he graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1942 with the Class of 1943. He served in the Pacific theater during World War II aboard the USS California and the USS San Diego. His career in the Navy included anti-submarine warfare and naval intelligence. He served as commanding officer at sea of destroyers and a destroyer division. From 1965-68 he was assigned to the US Embassy in Moscow, Russia as the Naval Attache. After retiring from the Navy in 1972, he was an engineering and weapons systems consultant to the Defense Department until 1985. Preceded in death by his wife, Alice Eugenia (Jean) Varn, he is survived by two daughters, Alice-Eugenia Pack of Lake Ridge, VA and Janet Cravens of Shelbyville, KY; one son, George M. (Skip) Grkovic of North Augusta, SC; one sister, Helen Durand of Salmon, ID; one brother, Duke Grkovic of Richmond, VA; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
