Vern Gosdin Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 28, 2009.
.GOSDIN, Vern Passed at midnight, April 28, 2009. He was 74. Known throughout the world simply as "The Voice", Vern has made his mark on country music in a way few others ever will. He started out in a small church in Woodland, AL, singing while his mother Zuma, played piano. He ended up in California in the 60's, partnered with his brother Rex, and singing bluegrass that quickly gave way to country rock. Disillusioned, he moved to Atlanta, running a glass business to live a "normal" life without music. But he kept a guitar in his company truck and before long, was singing in clubs, which lead to trips to Nashville, which lead his first demo. The rest is pure country history. He has hit the number 1 spot many times, over 20 top 10 hits, numerous gold records and a long list of awards. He's been nominated for a Grammy, a Dove and a Billboard award, as well as a few of the coveted CMA awards, of which he won Song of the Year for "Chiseled In Stone" in 1989. Though considered one of country music's best singers and songwriters, Vern has remained "under the radar", humble, and still writing songs up until his death. A funny, charismatic man who loved a good joke or prank, Vern was always the first to laugh. He continually wrote jokes and his friends continually told him not to give up his "day job". He sang "I know the written word won't follow me into the ground, so if I'm going to leave something behind, I'd better write it down" in "I'd Better Write It Down", written by Hank Cochran. Thank goodness he not only wrote it down, but sang it to last for eternity. He is survived by amazing fans; son, Steve; a grandson Tommy; and a host of close friends, including Mike Parsons, Truman Moore, Kelsie Maphet, Dawn Hall, Ann Street-Kavanagh, Pal, his dog and especially Katie, his special angel and the true love of his life. A public visitation will be Saturday from 12-4 p.m., at MOUNT OLIVET FUNERAL HOME

A fan of Vern's music since I first heard him sing. My favorite being: Is It Raining At Your House ....... I fulfilled a dream when I had the pleasure of meeting him at Fan Fair in Nashville, the one and only time I attended. Still believe the year I elected to attend was not a coincidence. Meeting Vern Gosdin was and will always be treasured as I continue to listen to him sing. Bless all who treasure him and his music as much as I do. A treasure that keeps on giving to all who loved him and his music... You are truly missed!

Vern was a close personal friend that i had known for many years. We wrote songs together, had many evenings at dinner while in Nashville, visited his home on Stallion Drive many times as well as hid home in Monroe, Louisiana. Vern was a drear friend and my wife and I miss him terribly. I would like to contact his nephew to discuss the purchase of certain items and a CD that Vern had made for me personally. He wanted me to come to Nashville to get it personally, but I was too late. One of the most dissapointing decisions that I ever made.

We miss you Vern.. Lee and Barb Hopper 859-320-0323

Vern was a special friend for so many years. I sent Vern several of my songs in hope that he might record them, but sadly, he never did. I met him the first time in 2000 in Nashville. We went to the recording studio and he listen to several of my recordings and then we spent the next several hours while Vern sang song after song. He told me then that he had never written a song that he had not lived. My wife and I visited Vern many times in Nashville at his home on Stallion Drive, and spent the evening at many of Vern's favorite restaurants and fast food hangouts. He would gladly sang for the tourists at several dinner restaurants and sign autographs for as long as they cared to wait. Vern had so many stories to tell and so many friends to talk about. Stories about George Jones, Billy Ray Cyrus and his true friend Jim Varney. On several occasions, Vern would call me at my home in Florida and on would seem surprised when he would hear his music playing in the background. When I was in Vegas in 2002, I called Vern around midnight (Vegas time). When Vern answered, I will never forget his laugh when I told him that I was in Vegas and "Just Called to Say Hello". That fit well into many of our future conversations.., because of his song, "Nobody Calls from Vegas, Just To Say Hello". My greatest regret was that I got a call from Vern and he told me he had a CD of new, unpublished songs for me, and when I asked him to send it to me, he told me to come to Nashville and he would hand it to me. Sadly, I never got there before Vern passed away. He was, and will always be one of my greatest friends. Lee Hopper. Riverview, FL
