Doris May Carlson

Doris May Carlson (nee Davis) 90 of Avon Lake passed away, Thursday, June 9, 2016 at the Main Street Care Center, Avon Lake following a two year struggle with Alzhheimers. Mrs. Carlson was born March 27, 1926 in Kane, PA and had lived in Avon Lake for the past 64 years. Mrs. Carlson was a graduate of Kane High School and received her nursing degree from Butler County Nursing School. She worked as a registered nurse for 20 years, beginning her career after her daughters were in high school. Doris worked as an operating room nurse at Elyria Memorial Hospital, for the Lorain County Health Department as a public health nurse at the Tuberculosis Clinic and at Allen Memorial Hospital where she managed Central Supply. She retired in 1985 to spend more time with her family, especially her grandchildren. Doris was an active member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, participating in the Women's League, as a Stephen's Minister, as well as singing in the choir. Singing brought Doris great joy as she also belonged to the Lorain County Community Chorus. She enjoyed playing bridge, and lunch dates with her girlfriends; she would pass the time knitting. Doris is survived by her daughters Becki Stein (Gary) of St. Louis and Peg Ebner of Olmsted Falls. Other survivors include grandchildren Joshua, Jared (Holly), Kyle, Adam (Kara) and Alissa (Ryan) as well as great grandchildren Teagan, Lilly, Brendan, Carter, Cassie, Addison and Elijah. She is preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Glenn E. Carlson; parents Earl and Grace (nee Gibson) Davis and a sister Virginia Platell. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, June 14 at 11am at the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, 32801 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake. Rev. Kelly Brill of the church will officiate.
