Callie W. Cool Clemson Callie Washburn Cool, 93, widow of Dr. Bingham M. "Bing" Cool, died Saturday, November 16, after a brief illness. Born in Starkville, MS, she was the daughter of the late Ralph Brown and Callie Arnold Washburn. She graduated from Louisiana State University, and was married a short time later. For most of her married life she lived in college towns and enjoyed the variety of people and activities. She moved to Clemson in 1958, where her husband was a professor in the Department of Forestry for 31 years. She taught in the Episcopal Day School kindergarten, and subsequently worked as a secretary in the Principal's Office at D.W. Daniel High. She met many young students, and was always delighted to encounter them later on. She was a member of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church in Clemson. She is survived by daughters Davy Hammatt of Clemson, Elizabeth Stuver (Thomas) of Rifle, CO, and Rachel Rowe (Chesley) of Clemson (in China, temporarily); grandchildren Heather Modzelewski (Neil), Rebecca Bradley (Bill), Cameron Stuver Moody (Greg), Mark Stuver, Callie Marsh (Abe), Taylor Rowe (Brittany); and six great-grandchildren. The family would like to recognize the loving assistance of our friend, Tywanda King; thecompassionate and supportive care of Interim Hospice; and the friendly, caring, and competent staff of Sterling House, where Mother has lived for the past five years. The care she received from all these sources eased her final days for her and for us. We are grateful beyond words. There will be a graveside committal service Saturday, December 28, at 10:30 AM at Cemetery Hill, followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church; the family will receive friends in the Parish Hall immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, to Interim Hospice, or to Clemson University Foundation for The Bingham M. Cool Endowment for Forestry Student Support.

Callie's mother and my grandfather grew up together in the same ARNOLD household as step-brother and sister. We are currently working on family history and genealogy, and we would love to connect with anyone in your family who is interested and either is or wants to be involved in filling our more details of their lives in Oktibbeha County, MS. As a side note, my father was born in Anderson, SC and was a Clemson graduate. That is a beautiful tribute you wrote for Callie, by the way. Kind regards, Bob Webb (Marvin Merritte HIGH's grandson).

I was sorry to read about this--she was so important in the lives of my girls, a wonderful neighbor (and also the mother of our first babysitter in Clemson.) My sympathy to all the family.

We have known Callie for many years. She and Ruby Elrod were mistaken for each other many time. I felt honored to be called "Callie". She lived only a short distance from us on Hickory Way at the Clemson Downs.

Whenever an old member of the Clemson Forestry Department (or spouse) slips away, I reflect upon the group that served under Dr. Lehotsky in the corner of the P&A bldg. They were a collection of some fine folks that steered and nurtured the fledging Department into a huge asset the State of SC and community of agrarians. God bless all family members.
